Tata Sky optimizes its Enterprise Architecture system for improved customer engagement “By tapping into TCS' IT and consulting expertise, we achieved an optimized Enterprise Architecture. The TCS team collaborated effectively to deliver on-time and within budget.” N Ravishanker, Chief Information Officer, Tata Sky Abstract Tata Sky wanted to optimize customer service, improve resilience against system failures, and improve its go-to-market strategies. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) provided the company with an EA assessment, identifying opportunities for improvement and enhancement of its current application landscape. Tata Sky can now achieve an optimized and agile IT landscape that is in line with its business imperatives and goals. About the Client Tata Sky, a joint venture between Tata Sons Ltd. and 21st Century Fox, provides satellite television services in India. It offers direct-to-home (DTH) services, interactive services, set top boxes, video on demand services, multi dwelling unit solutions for multistoried buildings, and channel packages. Business Challenge In just 10 years, direct-to-home (DTH) services have emerged as a lucrative market in India, successfully challenging cable television with superior broadcasting quality and technology. As one of the pioneers in DTH services, Tata Sky wanted to maintain its leadership position by continuing to pursue its growth strategy through high quality products and superior customer service. In addition, with the mandatory digitization of cable TV services across India, the company hoped to increase its market share by attracting customers away from analog cable, thereby maintaining its position as India's leading DTH provider. Tata Sky wanted to develop a scalable Enterprise Architecture (EA) that would enable optimized customer service with a reduced cost per subscriber, enhance goto-market strategies, and ensure better resilience to system failures. The company chose TCS to provide a detailed assessment of its EA, along with recommendations that would help the company reach the desired state. Client Tata Sky Industry Pay Television Offering Consulting www.tcs.com The TCS team met all key stakeholders and studied available documentation to assess the maturity levels of the current EA at Tata Sky. TCS also studied the current industry trends, analyzed the business models of competitors and global players, and determined the information technology drivers and the impact of disruptive technologies on the current IT architecture. This knowledge was put to use in creating detailed maps for business architecture, application architecture, integration architecture, and technology architecture. The existing as well as target architecture were documented, and this informed the Integrated Methodology for Processoriented Architecture and Component Technology (IMPACT) used for the EA. Keeping in mind salient industry trends and business imperatives, we provided specific recommendations to help the company reach the targeted future state. Focusing on EA governance as a major opportunity for improvement, an elaborate IT governance structure was created. With the digital platform growing in importance, the proposed Enterprise Architecture roadmap also focused on a digital strategy that highlighted mobility, social media and loyalty management, as well as, web and mobile analytics. Results Based on the analysis and strategic insights delivered by TCS, Tata Sky has been able to align its technology with its business objectives. The EA assessment helped Tata Sky gain fact-based insights into its systems and procedures, benchmark its current state architecture across various EA-based parameters, and identify opportunities for improvement and enhancement of its current application landscape. These recommendations helped Tata Sky establish appropriate EA practices and improve architecture governance. The TCS team highlighted risks in the current EA, and suggested opportunities for consolidation and optimization of applications to enable scalability and effectively leverage disruptive technologies. Further, Tata Sky gained a roadmap for an optimized technology architecture in line with the company's business imperatives and industry trends. With an IT infrastructure that can fully support the company's business goals, Tata Sky can now look forward to better business-IT alignment.
