Tata Building India School English Essay Competition – 2010-11
As you may be aware, the Tata group of companies has been undertaking a number of initiatives
for youth to express their ideas and showcase their talent. One key initiative to inspire young
minds towards nation building is the countrywide Tata Building India School Essay Competition
for students of class 6 to 12 which has been running successfully in the last four years.
Started in 2006 with 6 cities and 1 lakh students in English language, the competition has grown
manifold to become India’s largest school essay competition. With the tremendous response that
we have received each year, we are now launching the 5th edition of the competition in the
current year 2010-11 and plan to reach nearly 3 million students in over 5000 schools across 8
languages covering around 150 cities. The national winners of previous editions also got the
opportunity to meet and interact with the past President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and the
current President of India, Mrs. Pratibha Patil and the Vice President Mr. Hamid Ansari in New
Delhi.
The English edition of the competition in the academic year 2010-11 will be conducted across 54
cities where almost 1.5 million students from 2300 English medium schools are expected to
participate. This letter is to invite your school to take part in this very promising nation building
initiative.
The competition will be held in 2 phases. In the first phase, children be shown a film titled
“Keepers of the Flame” produced by the noted film maker Zafar Hai, on the lives and times of the
three Tata leaders – Jamsetji Tata, J.R.D. Tata and Naval Tata or a medley of two films – one
through the lens of school children, a film about Tata companies’ efforts to help preserve the
planet and inspire students to preserve the environment, titled “Speak for the Earth”. The other
film deals with the Tata story over the last 100 years captured in the form of a moving exhibition.
The second phase of the competition will engage the children in writing an essay of
approximately 500 words on a pre-determined topic of nation building.
To further ensure a level playing field, the competition will be held at two levels – Junior Level
(Std. 6 – 8) and Senior Level (Std. 9 – 12). The winners of the competition are selected at the
school level, and then judged at the city level, and thereafter for national level recognition,
winning attractive prizes.
