10 Ways The Coastal Society Is Reducing Our Ecological Impact To follow the spirit of TCS 20's, theme, "Charting a New Course: Shaping Solutions for the Coasts," our Conference Planning Committee has taken several measures to reduce our ecological impact. These include: Printing the "Call for Papers" on wood-free paper with soy based inks and distributing it in bulk to colleagues rather than individual mailings; Maintaining a Conference website to reduce distribution of printed materials; Utilizing a shared-access online abstract and paper submission system rather than mailing paper submissions with conference planners; Relying on email and phone communications for planning activities; Holding TCS 20 at certified Florida Green Lodging hotel: an effort by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to encourage the lodging industry to conserve and protect Florida's natural resources, this program acknowledges and promotes lodging facilities that demonstrate water and energy conservation, waste minimization, recycling, indoor air quality, environmentally preferable purchasing, program sustainability, and pollution prevention; Encouraging our hotel accommodations to offer recycling containers for conference participant use in conference facilities; Conserving energy and reducing traffic by providing shuttle services for field trips and encouraging conference attendees to ride the trolley to local destinations; Providing organic cotton conference bags to attendees for use during conference and beyond; Printing TCS 20 Conference Program and Abstract Book on recycled paper with soy ink; and Continuing to actively address coastal issues by fostering dialogue, forging partnerships, and promoting communication and education.
