10/17/15 Background • Following the English Civil War, Charles II rewarded titles and land on those who supported his restoration to the throne (1660). Colonizing NC SS8 • Eight men were rewarded with a large tract of land in the “New World”. • This tract, named Carolina, lay south of the colony of Virginia, between the 31⁰ and 36⁰N and extending from the Atlantic Ocean in the East to the Pacific Ocean in the West. Background Assignment At the time, no one really knew how much land was actually given, since English explorers had no idea how far west the North American continent extended. Read and annotate “A Declaration and Proposals of the Lord Proprietor of North Carolina, August 25September 4, 1663” The tract included what would become North and South Carolina, Georgia and northern Florida. These men became the eight Lords Proprietors. In March of 1663, a Charter established the Colony of Carolina with the eight Lords Proprietors as both rulers and land owners. The document is the plan for governing and recruiting colonists outlined by the Lords Proprietors for the Colony of Carolina. It includes plans to grant land to colonists, the terms of indentured servitude, the protection of the colony from the Spanish to the south and the American Indians, and the quitrents (land tax) to be paid to the eight Lords Proprietors. 1 10/17/15 Assignment Now read “A Royal Colony” and answer the questions. Once you have completed reading and responding to both documents, complete a Venn Diagram that compares the Proprietary Colony with the Royal Colony. Who were the major groups that immigrated and settled in the Carolina Colony? SS8 Royal Colony Struggles Between 1730 and 1750, North Carolina’s population doubled. It doubled again between 1750 to 1770. What might be some issues related to such rapid population growth? Royal Colony Struggles Starting in the 1730’s, immigration significantly increased in North Carolina and settlers began moving westward into the piedmont region. The colony struggled to collect taxes but costs were high because of the population increase. The newcomers spoke different languages and had different customs compared to the colonists under the proprietary colony. As the settlers moved west, they moved closer to the Cherokee. The Cherokee began to feel threatened by the settlers. 2 10/17/15 Immigrating to NC • Most of the newcomers were from northern colonies. • They were drawn to the lower cost of land. • Previous settlers generally arrived along the coast and landed in ports, the new immigrants followed the Indian trail, “The Great Wagon Trail”, through Virginia. When the immigrants passed through Pilot Mountain, they knew they were in NC. Assignment Using textbooks and your devices, research the major groups (Scots-Irish, Germans, Highland Scots, Quakers & Moravians) that settled in NC during the 1730’s – 1770’s. Map the areas where major groups settled in North Carolina. Fill in the chart summarizing where the groups immigrated from, approximate time and area of settling, and reasons for immigrating. Frontier life Despite NC’s reputation for being disorganized and poorly governed, immigrants wanted to settle here for the land and liberty. Settlers were able to build their own log cabins, raise cattle, and grow grain. Each group brought their own culture and religions. In 1765, William Tryon became governor and he implemented many reforms in an attempt to better organize governance of the colony. However, conflicts continued between the coastal settlers and the backcountry settlers. 3
