InfraRail
Signal Conditioner/Two-Wire Transmitter
Infrared Thermometer
The economical, versatile, and technological answer to your
temperature measurement requirements.
Never before has a noncontact temperature
DIN-rail adaptable,
mountable, and
economical
Start with a signal conditioner
and a 4 to 20 mA transmitter
For the first time, Ircon® has
successfully combined a signal
conditioner and two-wire transmitter
in one modular DIN-rail mountable
unit. Now, you can integrate
temperature measurement
with other relays and signal
conditioners already on your
process line. The InfraRail system
can be wired directly into any
existing 24 volt dc power supply or
can be supplied by a power supply
ranging from 16 to 40 volts.
This modular, signal conditioner/
transmitter combination – with
analog output – includes onboard signal processing circuitry
and controls that make it easy to
correct or adjust Emissivity and/or
Response Time. In addition the
Peak-Picker function allows for
accurate temperature measurement
when measuring an intermittent
target.
Select from the most complete
range of sensing options
With three distinctly different sensor
types, the InfraRail system can
adapt to virtually any temperature
measurement challenge from 700 to
5000°F (375 to 3000°C). All sensors
have NEMA 4 (IP66) rated housings.
And because these sensors are
powered by internal photovoltaic
cells, they require no
special power sources.
2
measurement system proven so accurate
(to 0.75% of full scale), so convenient (DIN-rail
mountable), and so adaptable (with your choice
of sensors for different temperature ranges and
applications). It’s nothing less than what you would
expect from the world leader in infrared temperature
measurement for 40 years.
The InfraRail system is ideal for OEM’s and users in
furnaces and induction heating systems as well as
steel and glass applications.
Choose the Type “E” miniature
fixed focus lens sensor for economy and basic sensing
requirements. With a non-sighted
focus at 30” (762mm), the Type “E”
sensors measure temperatures from
1400 to 5000°F (800 to 3000°C).
Choose the Type “S” thru-thelens, single lens reflex (SLR)
sensor for more discriminating
sensing requirements where pinpoint
focus and aiming are essential.
These sensors are available
with InGaAs detectors for lower
temperature applications down to
700°F (375°C) or silicon detectors
for higher temperature applications
from 1000 to 5000°F (550 to
3000°C).
Choose the Type “F” miniature
fiber optics sensor with focusable
reimaging lens (covered by U.S.
Patent Nos. 4919505 and 5011296)
for maximum mounting flexibility.
The fiber optic cable – available in
lengths of 10 and 25 feet (3 and 7.6
meters)– allows users to locate the
sensor in hard-to-reach areas or
environments where sensors cannot
be externally cooled. It’s also ideal
for electromagnetic fields.
Then select from options to suit
your application.
From the start, the InfraRail system
has been designed to meet the
broadest range of applications.
The system can integrate a wide
variety of options:
DIN-rail mountable power supplies (110 Vac or 220 Vac with 24 Vdc output)
■ A compact temperature indicator/
process controller with alarms
■
Water-cooled jackets and air
purge housings for particularly
hostile environments
■
Special housing to mount and
protect signal conditioner/
transmitter and complete choice
of mounting options for sensor
■
Rugged fiber optic cable assembly
with angle bracket and sight
tube assembly
■
All-in-all, InfraRail is an all-in-one
temperature measurement system
that can meet your precise needs
– accurately and economically.
On the following pages, you’ll
find additional specifications and
ordering information that allow you
to match the InfraRail package to
your process.

Sensor selection depends upon your application
The Type “E” miniature fixed focus sensor is an economical, very rugged
and watertight sensor ideal for basic temperature sensing needs. This
small, aluminum construction sensor provides a simple sighting feature to
aid in target alignment. The “E” sensor is fixed focus at 30” (762 mm). The
spot size to be measured is determined by how far the sensor is installed
from the target area. The schematic at right shows the spot size at various
distances from the sensor.
Specifications for Type “E” sensor
Temperature range:
1400 to 5000°F (800 to 3000°C)
Spectral response:
0.7 to 1.0 micron
Ambient temperature range:* 0 to 200°F (-17 to 93°C) without cooling
Housing rating:
NEMA 4, IP66
The formula shown in the
diagrams defines the spot
size at the focal point.
Simply divide the Working
Distance (D) by the Resolution
Factor (F) to determine the
Spot Size (d).
“E” Type Optical Characteristics
The Type “S” focusable SLR (single lens reflex) sensor provides
thru-the-lens sighting and allows greater mounting flexibility with an
adjustable focal range, as the diagram at the right shows. This sensor, with
its reticle defined measuring area, can measure targets as small as 0.012
inches (0.3mm). When ordered with InGaAs detector, it measures process
temperatures, down to 700°F (375°C). When ordered with silicon detector,
the Type “S” is ideal for applications up to 5000°F (3000°C).
Specifications for Type “S” sensor
Temperature range: Silicon: 1000 to 5000°F (550 to 3000°C)
**InGaAs: 700 to 1400°F (375 to 800°C)
Spectral response:
Silicon: 0.7 to 1.0 micron
**InGaAs: 1.5 to 1.6 micron
Ambient temperature range:* 0 to 200°F (-17 to 93°C) without cooling
Housing rating: NEMA 4, IP66
The Type “F” miniature fiber optic sensor affords the greatest mounting
flexibility of all the sensor choices, enabling you to locate the sensor in the
harshest, most remote, or hard-to-reach places on the process line.
Its extremely rugged stainless steel housing is ideal for high ambient
conditions. These sensors are available with 10 or 25 foot (3 or 7.6 meter)
fiber optic cables and optionally available with a ruggedized version
for extremely difficult applications. Select a fiber optic sensor with a
focusable reimaging lens for environments where ambient temperatures
(without external cooling) may reach 400°F (200°C). For difficult to reach
or small openings an extension tip is available for temperatures up to
575°F (300°C).
Specifications for Type “F” sensor

How to order an InfraRail system
In addition to the DIN-rail mountable signal conditioner/ transmitter package below,
select one of more than forty sensors listed that will precisely match your application and
mounting requirements.
■ For those applications where a power supply is not already in place on your process line,
we have also listed two types of power supplies – for 110 and 220 Vac operation.
■ When a direct temperature readout or temperature alarm is required, select the TV-VIEW
accessory.
■ A variety of other accessories are listed for special mounting requirements or particularly
challenging dusty or high temperature environments where additional protection may be
necessary.
Decoding the model number sequence
A
B
D N
The first two digits of model block “A” identify the InfraRail series – DN.
■ The third digit refers to the sensor-
type: Type E, S or F.
■ The fourth and fifth digits of model
block “A” describe the optical
characteristics of the sensor.
■
The InfraRail noncontact
temperature measurement
system
The central component of the
InfraRail system is the 4 to 20
mA, two-wire signal conditioner/
transmitter.
■
Model block “B” indicates the upper temperature limit of the sensor in hundreds of degrees
e.g.: 8=800, 24=2400) and
