FMSDC TRADE FAIR
Facilities Planning Opens Its Doors
Facilities’ Planning was very
open to participating in a
diversity outreach event.
Facilities Planning Director, Pete
Newman challenged any
construction company to come
and meet with them one on one
if they were interested in
construction opportunities. In
the recent past, there just has
not been that flood of interest
shown by many contractors.
Tools and Strategies for Success:
The workshop included a
PowerPoint overview, designed by Rummy Miranda, of the contractor selection
process and a breakdown of the contract proposals. The best part was the tag
team presentation given by Pete Newman and Gina Seabrook, also of Facilities
Spurring
Competition
An outreach was planned to
reach out to contractors that
may have felt discouraged about
the challenges of getting into
construction at UCF and to also
increase the pool of ideas when
contractors do bid. After a series
of meetings, a workshop format
was agreed upon as the best
method to reach potential
contractors.
Pete Newman, Facilities Planning Director and Gina Seabrook coach vendors on bidding
UCF construction projects.
Contd...…Planning. Pete Newman went through the various sections of
the proposals that contractors’ were expected to both adhere and respond
to. Gina Seabrook followed Pete’s direction with tidbits and comments that
helped reaffirm the main points. Gina also included a helpful Do’s and
Don’ts section that noted some mistakes and positives past contractors
had made in submitting their proposals for work. Contractors were also
invited to contact the Facilities Team for one on one meet and greets and
to also review a collection of winning bid proposals.

There were over 20 small, minority, and woman owned businesses that
attended the workshop and showed the great interest there is in
contractors wanting to do business with UCF. To further give these
companies the tools they needed to succeed, a mock presentation was

construction is a billion dollar and national construction company. The company
has a large body of work that includes many different areas and types of
construction. Turner Construction is also known for its development, training,
and use of small, minority and woman owned business. We were very
appreciative to have Turner bring in their top project leaders, GM – Scott
Skidelsky, PM – Margaret Simone, and VP – Vernice Atkins-Bradley, to show
potential contractors what is involved in giving a winning presentation.
A presentation is required by all contractors that are short listed for any new
construction job at UCF and can be a critical link to winning a job. Turner
Construction has been involved in many UCF construction bids and was
awarded our Library Expansion and Nanotechnology project.

Purchasing Team – Always ready and willing to help you meet
UCF vendor selection and bid requirements.
After being connected by Bill Merck, VP of Administration
and Finance, Fred Kittinger, Associate VP for University
Relations and Tamara Hall, Assistant Director of Diversity in
Contracts began meeting in February of 2007 to discuss an
appropriate format that would both impact the diverse business
community in a positive way and show UCF’s support of small
minority and woman owned businesses. We felt the best way to
show that support is to visually show that UCF does stand for
opportunity and the many different departments that are
involved in the vendor selection process.
Thank you all of you who helped us achieve that!
Sharing her thoughts on the need for diversity in business
opportunities was opening speaker State Representative
Geraldine Thompson, who provided the original inspiration for
the Supplier Diversity Day in earlier conversations with Fred
Kittinger, and Dr. Dan Holsenbeck, Vice President for
University Relations.
Goal 4: Become more inclusive and diverse. Goal 5: Be America’s
leading partnership university. You may recognize these goals as
some of the high, but achievable standards set by our University
President, John C. Hitt. What makes these goals achievable is the
direction they give and the understanding of what can be accomplished
when we all come together, like the 2007 UCF Supplier Diversity Day!
What started as two UCF Departments, Purchasing and University
Relations wanting to individually do a community showcase of
Minority and Woman owned businesses, led to what became a
collaborative effort and the culmination of over 80 businesses
networking with over 37 UCF Departments Representatives!
Tamara Hall, Representative Thompson and Bill Merck,
VP Administration and Finance.

Music Department
When my supervisor Adele Labrake, suggested for me to be at the Showcase, I was not very enthusiastic about the
idea of sitting at a table waiting to be contacted by vendors, because, well, Music Department. I said to myself,
what are the chances of meeting vendors that can bring any service to us.... oh boy was I in for a big surprise!
It was awesome.... I met a vendor that can move pianos. I met a vendor that can offer the dry clean service for
the Band uniforms. I met a vendor that deals with lighting for stage presentation which can be use by the Opera
and Orchestra studios.
I met a vendor that deals only and exclusively in scanning Music Scores...Also met a Seamstress for the Music Band
and Starlet knight’s uniforms. Again, way to go Purchasing Department I loved it....
My advice to all the Departments at UCF, never say no... you never know who will stop at your table.......
When is the next showcase? Book me... :-)
Now Who’s Ready for the Next Showcase?

Business Spotlight
I, Tamara Hall, experienced this first hand after attending a series of back to back trade shows in March and April, I did not have
much time to plan the crucial details needed to launch a successful Supplier Diversity Day. CorpMerchGroup worked with me and
helped me step by step to find solutions.
When I mentioned searching for poster stands for our Supplier Diversity Day, Jamie Williams, of CorpMerch
remembered and checked a local art supply that he takes his kids to. He found our sign board stands and also
designed our supplier diversity day mugs. Therefore, our business spotlight is CorpMerchGroup Inc!

Success Story
Supplier
Diversity Day
May 18th
An administrative assistant in the Center for Distributed Learning since July of 1996. For many years I
was the only support person in the center therefore wearing many hats. I support the staff, naming the
Director with meeting arrangements, screening calls, setting appointments, personnel, payroll,
purchasing, travel, property, supervising students and a senior secretary. We manage 5 conference
rooms in Partnership II which is sometimes very demanding on our staff. I serve on various university
committees, so I truly keep myself busy, but I love my service to UCF and wouldn't have it any other
way.

Marketing, and Technology Firm
Our latest success story comes to
us from Diversity in Contracts
Liaison, Darlene Bouley. Darlene is
part of the original Liaisons
members and has been active in
the Diversity in Contracts program
from its very beginning, last July
2006.
About
Darlene Bouley
An Administrative Assistant in the Center for Distributed Learning since
July of 1996, Darlene says, “For many years I was the only support
person in the center therefore wearing many hats. I support the staff,
namely the Director with budget, meeting arrangements, screening calls,
setting appointments, personnel, payroll, purchasing, travel, property,
supervising students, and a senior secretary. We manage 5 conference
rooms in Partnership II which is sometimes very demanding on our staff.
I serve on various university committees, so I truly keep myself busy, but
I love my service to UCF and wouldn't have it any other way.”
Linking Opportunities
Darlene Bouley responded to my email, Tamara Hall from Purchasing:
Diversity in Contracts, which
requested departments to send a
list of vendors they would like to
meet when we hosted a Florida
Minority Supplier Development,
Council’s monthly business mixer,
March 13, 2007.
Success!
Darlene was in search of trade
show vendors, and though none
showed up that day, I followed up
and sent over some leads. A match
was found in Hooah, LLC, resulting
in a state of the art trade show
booth and materials that
will support their online initiatives.
What Sealed the Deal?
Darlene said, “…So far everyone
here is pleased with Tanya Zeiher,
Client Relations Manager from
Hooah, that you sent to me after
our 1st event in March. Tanya
called me and I set a date to meet
her at the event in May in the
Student Union. I was impressed
with her knowledge and
professionalism so I invited her to
my office.
She met with the director, assistant
director, coordinator, computer
support and I, (Vendor Requestor)
and (Business Diversity Liaison),
and in no time we had what we
wanted.
