NAVY HALE KEIKI SCHOOL 153 Bougainville Drive ~ Honolulu, Hawaii 96818 ~ 808 423-‐1727 Financial Aid: Policies and Procedures
2015-2016 Navy Hale Keiki School (NHKS) mission includes supporting children and their families. This commitment extends to
all children notwithstanding their family's ability to pay tuition. NHKS serves both a large military population as well
as a local civilian population. This financial aid / tuition assistance program benefits those children and their families
who otherwise might have financial inability to pay the full NHKS costs. The NHKS financial aid program is intended
to make NHKS more accessible and affordable to all students, thus fostering a more diverse school community.
Need-Based Financial Aid
Navy Hale Keiki School maintains a commitment to provide as
need-based financial aid. The NHKS financial aid program is a
need-based program designed to assist some families in reducing
the cost of attending NHKS. And although paying for education is
first and foremost the responsibility of the family, we devote
limited funds each year to a financial aid budget that helps assist
families. This will ensure consistent and equitable treatment of all
applicants. All aid will be awarded on the basis of financial need as
demonstrated through NHKS School and Student Services by the
National Association of Independent Schools. To help us
objectively assess what a family is able to contribute to its
student(s) education expenses, we use School and Student
Services (SSS By NAIS) as a trusted third party. Financial aid will
not be awarded to students who do not qualify for it, nor will
students be awarded financial aid in excess of their computed
need. The total amount of financial aid granted depends on the
availability of funds. Aid is granted for a period of one school-year,
based on current information; changes in a family's situation may
change the amount awarded from year to year. Financial aid is not
guaranteed every year regardless if you were awarded financial aid
in a prior year.
NHKS strives to accept for enrollment every student who meets
NHKS's qualifications regardless of their financial need. In the
administration of its financial aid program, NHKS does not
discriminate on the basis of race, national origin, ethnic origin,
religious affiliation, sex, or gender.
Financial aid may be denied to families or students who have not
been timely in completing the required financial aid forms, or in
paying in full all outstanding school debts and accounts.

Financial Aid: Frequently Asked Questions Q.
A.
Q.
A.
Q.
A.
Does applying for financial aid have any bearing on the
admission decision?
No. Admission decisions are completely independent of
financial need.
If I have more than one child, can both be put on one
application?
Yes. A single financial aid application should be submitted to
cover all of the students, both new applicants to NHKS and
current students, within the household.
I’m still waiting for 1099s to arrive. What can I do?
According to the IRS, 1099s should be received by February
15th. If you do not receive the forms in a timely manner, call
the IRS for help at 1-800-829-1040. Please refer to the IRS
website, www.irs.gov, for more information about 1099s.

your W-2s have not yet arrived.
Q.

This form gives our office permission to request a copy of
your complete tax return if there are questions about any part
of it or if it has been amended after it was filed.
Q.
If I file my taxes electronically, do I still need to sign my
returns?

I have a valuable property but it does not translate into
money I can spend. Can I still qualify for financial aid even if
my house is worth a lot?
Although most financial aid is based on income, you must list all
real estate you own. Home equity is a measure of financial
stability, but consideration of the value of your house is limited
based on your income.
Q.
A.
Why do I have to report nontaxable income?
To be fair among all applicants, any income that is available to
you must be reported. Some families choose to put money into
untaxed accounts, such as retirement funds, while others have all
their income taxed.
Q.
What if I haven’t heard from my other children’s schools
about their financial aid awards? I know NHKS needs to have
that information.
If you have been receiving aid from another school, submit to SSS
by NAIS a copy of the most recent award letter from that school. If
you receive aid after your application has been filed, please send
a copy of the award letter to SSS as soon as you receive it.

Q.
A.
Can I send in everything but my tax returns by the March 25th
deadline and then send in my taxes after they are done?
No. Application forms, copies of completed tax returns, copies of
W-2s, and any other required documents must be submitted to
SSS by the same deadline. Make plans ahead of time to complete
tax filing by that date. When submitting documents, be sure to put
a cover sheet to identify your documents. Cover sheets are
available at PFS Online, Print PFS Cover.
Q.
How do I know if SSS received my Parents’ Financial
A.
Statement (PFS) or supporting documents?
You can check the status of your submissions by logging in to
your PFS account and checking the “Manage Documents”
Q.
screen to see a list of the received documents.
A.
What happens if my application is incomplete?
It will not be processed. We recommend that you check the status
of your application by logging back into your PFS account.
In a divorce situation, do you need the same information Q.
from both parents?
A.
Yes. Each biological parent is required to fill out a separate
financial aid application. If either has remarried, stepparents’ Q.
incomes should also be included.
What are the main reasons that financial aid is denied?
Incomplete financial information and too much income.
What if one parent is not legally responsible for
supporting the child’s education?
Please submit a copy of the divorce decree verifying that the
parent is not legally responsible.
What if my child’s other biological parent cannot be
found or contacted?
Please submit documentation from an official source. We will
accept a statement from the Child Support Enforcement
Agency, or a letter from an attorney, clergyman, or employer
explaining the situation. Letters must be signed and should be
on letterhead stationery.
