Lesson Plan
Title: How to Express Actions; Palabras en Acción
Subject: Foreign Language
Grade Level: 6 - 8
Overview:
Verbs are an important part of any language - every complete
sentence has one. In this lesson, students will study the most
commonly used Spanish verbs in the infinitive form. Students will
use online resources to practice and master the use of these verbs and
they will develop an understanding of how verbs work. They will
identify a verb and follow a set of patterns to conjugate them.
Approximate Duration: 2-3 class periods (50 minutes each)

Objectives:
The student will...
1. Complete Spanish sentences by adding the correct form of verbs.
2. Create complete sentences using the appropriate form of a verb.
3. Complete a story by filling in the blanks with the appropriate form
of a verb.
4. Write an essay on a topic of their choice using the correct present
tense form of regular verbs.
5. Type the essay in Microsoft Word and read it to the class.
6. Access the web site “Learn Spanish, a free online tutorial” to
complete a tutorial and to review the rules to conjugate the infinitive
form of Spanish verbs. Students will take online quizzes after
completing the tutorial.

Background Information:
Students should have a grade-level knowledge of Spanish and
English. This lesson could be used as a culminating activity on
infinitive verbs. The tutorials in this lesson could be used as an
introduction to infinitive verbs. If computers are limited, you may
want to pair/group students together.
Lesson Procedures
Introductory Activities:
1. Review the rules to conjugate the infinitive form of Spanish verbs
using the Verb Drills in the following websites:

2. After completion of the tutorial, have students take the online
quizzes as a review. If possible, allow students to take the quizzes
individually. If not possible, use the TV and scan converter and have
students answer the quizzes on paper.
3. Upon completion of the quizzes, have students submit their
answers.
4. Students will practice what they have learned by working on
Exercises 1, 2, and 3, found in the Reproducible Materials.
5. Students will be assigned an essay to complete. The teacher may
choose topics or the teacher may allow students to choose their own.
6. Give instructions on the essay: The length should be 3-5
paragraphs. Infinitive verbs, complete sentences, and vocabulary
words should be used. Students will be allowed to use their Spanish
dictionary to complete the essay.
7. After students complete their work, have them edit their essays
using a self-evaluation form (see Reproducibles).
8. When self-evaluations are complete, allow students to peer- edit
each other’s essays. Use the peer-editor form (see Reproducibles).
9. Each student should have at least one peer-editor. The teacher
should also edit each pupil’s work.
10. Students will conference with the teacher about their essays.
11. Teachers will return essays to the owners and individual students
will make proper corrections.
Closing Activities:
12. Students will type corrected essays in Microsoft Word and print
them. They will then share their essays with the class.
13. Students will take the test found in the Reproducible Materials.
Assessment Procedures:
1. Essays will be evaluated on spelling, vocabulary, sentence
structure and organizational skills. Emphasis will be placed on the
use of infinitive verbs.

Explorations and Extensions:
This lesson can be an introduction, a review, or an evaluation. In
addition to the lesson on present tense form of regular verbs, the web
site “Learn Spanish, A free online tutorial” offers many tutorials and
quizzes on a number of grammar and writing areas. It could be used
as an exam or nine-weeks test review.
In addition, the rules for using the present tense form of regular verbs
could be put in a slide presentation using Hyper Studio or
PowerPoint. The product could be shown as a review or shared in
lower grades to teach infinitive verbs.
