Preserving traditions | Raising awareness | Fostering the new generations for immediate release MUSICA DE CAMARA DEDICATES THIRTY-SIXTH ANNIVERSARY SEASON TO COMPOSER ROBERTO SIERRA July, 1 2015 – Musica de Camara, in partnership with El Museo del Barrio, marks its Thirty-sixth Anniversary by honoring distinguished contemporary classical composer Roberto Sierra. The renowned composer Roberto Sierra, born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, was awarded the Academy Award in Music from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and was elected to the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2010. Roberto Sierra has been Composer-in-Residence with the Milwaukee Symphony, Puerto Rico Symphony, New Mexico Symphony and the Philadelphia Orchestra and is currently Old Dominion Foundation Professor in the Humanities at Cornell University. Sierra’s works have been commissioned and performed by major American and European orchestras and international ensembles. Most recently, Roberto Sierra’s Cantares was heard in its world premiere at Carnegie Hall to a standing ovation. Performed by Leon Botstein and the American Symphony Orchestra with the Chorus and Glee Club of Cornell University the work blends the cultures of the African, Spanish, Native Peruvian and Aztec peoples into a vivid musical setting. Roberto Sierra, the preeminent figure of the Puerto Rican classical musical world, is an iconic composer whose achievements and works are an inspiration to musicians and audiences worldwide. Musica de Camara proudly dedicates its 36th Anniversary Season to Roberto Sierra. The season opens on November 20, 2015 with the New York Premiere of the film La Familia Figueroa: Una Dinastia Musical which documents the renowned Figueroa Family, Puerto Rico's most distinguished family of classical musicians. Musica de Camara continues its season by presenting two Charla-Conciertos: On January 29, 2016 harpsichord virtuoso Kenneth Hamrick with the American Virtuosi Ensemble perform Roberto Sierra's Concierto Nocturnal and Manuel de Falla's Concerto for Harpsichord, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Violin and Cello which was the inspiration for Sierra’s work. On March 4, 2016 the distinguished artists - Dominican mezzo-soprano Anna Tonna, native New Yorker, guitarist Oren Fader, and Brazilian pianist Samuel Kardos present a concert for voice and guitar with music by composers from North and South America. The concert will include Roberto Sierra’s works for solo guitar and his song cycle Julia. The Musica de Camara 36th Anniversary season concludes on May 20, 2016. The Musica de Camara Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Roselin Pabon, with viola soloist Christian Colberg perform an Orchestral Concert including Roberto Sierra’s Concerto for Viola, Edvard Grieg's Holberg Suite and Ralph Vaughn Williams’ Fantasy on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.
