UCM Celebrates Earth Day 365 with Week of Events
WARRENSBURG, MO (April 11, 2014) – The University of Central Missouri will observe Earth Day
with its annual Earth Day 365 celebration planned for April 21-28.
Kicking off the week of events is the return of the popular Haute Trash Fashion Show at 7 p.m.
Monday, April 21, in the Elliott Student Union ballroom. In its fifth year as part of UCM Earth
Day 365, Haute Trash feature volunteers from the campus and area communities modeling the latest in
sustainable fashions made from recyclable materials. The event is co-sponsored by UCM Student Financial
Services and the UCM Fashion Business Association.
The celebration continues with the Eco Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in
Elliott Student Union 236-238. The eco-friendly luncheon will offer menu selections by Sodexo’s Chef Dale
that will feature available local fare. The program will be a TED Talk by Alex Laskey, “How Behavioral
Science Can Lower Your Energy Bill.” Sign up to attend the luncheon at ucmo.edu/earthday365.
Immediately following the luncheon, Johnson County resident Michael Reinhardt will present “Cob
Construction—Affordable and Sustainable.” Reinhardt will offer information about his own experience
building a home constructed of a mixture of clay, sand, straw, water, stone and wood. The event will include a
hands-on activity and demonstration and the auction of a cob pizza oven on Saturday. Participants are
encouraged to dress mud-ready.
The Green Car Show is planned for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, on the Elliott Union Mall.
More than a dozen alternative fuel vehicles will be available for viewing.

On Thursday, April 24, UCM students will participate in the Earth Service Day. In addition,
Electronics recycling will be available from 3:30-6 p.m. in the UCM parking lot behind the W. C. Morris
Science Building, with access from South Holden Street. Televisions will not be accepted due to the cost of
recycling these items.
The Citizens for Environmental Action will host the Earth Week Family Festival, “What Can We
Do?” at the UCM Mitchell Street farm from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, April 26. Families are invited to attend and
learn how to grow their own food, support sustainable systems, buy local, conserve energy, reduce waste and
enjoy nature. Cyclists who ride to the event can receive a free bike tune-up and a water bottle, sponsored by the
UCM Student Recreation and Wellness Center, and the UCM agriculture program will host an open house with
information about the UCM High Tunnel Project. In collaboration with the American Heart Association,
children can help with the planning of raised bed at the site.
Wrapping up UCM’s Earth Week 365 celebration will be a multimedia and live music performance,
“Green Soul of the Ozarks: The Blackberry Winter Band” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 28, in Hendricks
Hall. Meredith Sisco and the Blackberry Winter Band, the group that provided music for the the Academy
Award-nominated film “Winter’s Bone,” and John Hess, UCM professor emeritus and published photographer,
will combine their talents to provide an audiovisual experience that celebrates nature and the amazing beauty
and culture of the Ozarks.
Glass recycling will be available Monday through Friday in the parking lot behind the W.C. Morris
Science Building, with access from South Holden Street.
The UCM Earth Day 365 brings together the university campus and surrounding communities during the
to provide an exchange of information and a celebration of innovative ideas about living an ecologically
friendly lifestyle through the year.
All Earth Day 365 events are free and open to the public.
