Focus on Energy Presents Walgreens with a $500,000 Incentive Check for Energy Efficiency
Projects
Wisconsin Walgreens Stores Reducing Energy Usage by 58 Million kWh through Chain Stores and
Franchises Program
MADISON, WI (April 9, 2014) – Focus on Energy, Wisconsin utilities' statewide program for energy efficiency and
renewable energy, recognized Walgreens strong efforts in 2013 for reducing its energy usage across Wisconsin through the
Chain Stores and Franchises Program. Focus on Energy recently presented Walgreens representatives with a $500,000
incentive check at the Edison Electric Institute National Key Accounts Workshop in Orlando, Florida.
Walgreens participation in Focus on Energy will save them an estimated 58 million kWh and 13 million Therms over the
total life of the upgrades. That energy savings is equivalent to powering more than 5,000 homes. Walgreens took advantage
of the maximum annual project incentives, totaling $500,000 cash back on its energy-saving upgrades. The projects spanned
across more than 200 Wisconsin locations in 2013. Walgreens efficiency measures included the addition of energy
management systems (EMS), demand controlled ventilation (DCV), low watt re-lamping of stores, and refrigeration upgrades
comprised of LED case lighting, ECM motors and anti-sweat heater controls.
“The Focus on Energy Chain Stores and Franchises Program is designed to help stores like Walgreens save energy, reduce
utility costs, and boost the customer experience,” said Matthew Matenaer, program manager for Focus on Energy.
“Walgreens is now saving energy across its Wisconsin stores and facilities. We look forward to seeing other businesses in the
state participate in our energy savings programs.”
“Walgreens commitment to helping our customers and employees get, stay, and live well goes beyond our products and
services,” said Jamie Meyers, manager of sustainability at Walgreens. “By focusing on energy efficiency in our stores, we
are able to reduce our carbon footprint.”
