ANNUAL REVIEW
FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Gary B. Arnold

Fellow Warriors:
How does one capture the meaning and the impact of
the past year while standing in the full flow and glow
of this present year? Photographer Michael Baxley
answers the question with his rousing cover photo.
I urge you to study the photo closely. The bold banners
expand on last year’s theme to “press on” with Peter’s
exhortation to “make every effort to add to our faith.”
Every day hundreds of school-children, parents and
teachers entered our school’s gates with the firm intent
to build on the solid foundation of our faith in Jesus.
Every day we worked hard to teach the essentials for
a productive and effective life. According to 2 Peter
1:5-8, those essentials are character, knowledge, selfcontrol, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness
and love – woven into the fabric of our college
preparatory education.
Grateful to God for bringing us this far, we press on.
Our work is not complete. There is much more to do.
This commitment to move forward birthed our driving
theme for the 2014-15 school year: “Rise and Shine!”
Mr. Baxley captures this energy with the brilliance of
the sun’s rays pouring over our school.
Attention, Warriorville. It’s time to rise and shine, to
reflect the glory of the Lord, to “shine like stars in the
universe” holding out the Word of life to Little Rock
and beyond. (Isaiah 60:1; Philippians 2:15)
Thank you for your daily participation in the golden triangle of home, church and school. We are here to serve, to educate
and to place Jesus at the center of all learning. We trust you will be pleased with the results of our labor chronicled in this
year’s edition of the Annual Review.
Dr. Gary B Arnold, EdD
President / Head of School
“Men and women who have lived wisely and well will shine brilliantly like the cloudless, star-strewn night skies. And those
who put others on the right path will glow like stars forever.” (Daniel 12:3)

Why Colleges are Recruiting LRCA Graduates
A
Little Rock Christian education is one that
equips graduates with the necessary skills
and accompanying discipline to become a
life-long learner – a graduate who is able to
flourish in a collegiate setting and vocation. Public and
private universities nationwide recruit our students.
Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia is a private
university which, like LRCA, fosters a love of God
and a love of learning. Both institutions offer an
environment and curriculum which allow students
to pursue, discern, and live truth as they serve our
communities and the nations.
Dr. Rex Horne has been the President of OBU since
2006 (and an LRCA grandparent since 2012). We
asked him recently to describe what he is observing in
our Warriors who attend OBU:
“Ouachita does present a rigorous academic challenge.
Students will find that they must be consistent in
applying themselves to the challenge of university life.
LRCA graduates do well here. There are two reasons
as I see it. They are challenged by their teachers at
LRCA. Also, they are told what to expect by [Warriors]
who graduated from or presently attend Ouachita.”
Committed, servants and relational are three
words that Dr. Horne used to describe the Warriors
in Arkadelphia.

Stockmarket Team Finishes Fifth in the Nation
“It was great to meet these bright students who put their math,
economics and personal finance skills to the test in the Stock
Market Game while further developing their understanding of
the global economy,” said Tim Griffin, Arkansas Congressman.
The Little Rock Christian Academy Capitol Hill Stock Market
Challenge Team finished first place in Arkansas and fifth place
in the nation.
FBLA club sponsor Susie Thompson and her team of students
(pictured left-to-right with Mrs. Thompson and Congressman
Griffin) Robert Thompson, Nathan Bentley, Lee Parker, Will Smith
and William Goodrich traveled to Washington D.C. in June to be
recognized for their Top 10 ranking in the Securities Industry and
Financial Markets Association’s Capitol Hill Challenge.
"This was a great opportunity for the
students to see investing, risk, return and
our world financial system in action. Being
honored by Congress in Washington D.C. was
an exceptional experience. I am so grateful
to be part of a school that supports and
encourages real world experiences."
Susie Thompson, FBLA sponsor and Economics educator
Congressman Griffin visited with our students and watched firsthand as they invested a hypothetical $100,000 in listed stocks,
bonds, and mutual funds and learned the value of saving and
investing while working together to maximize the return of their
portfolio. This 14-week challenge organizes teams of high school
students by Congressional district and teaches the importance of
savings and investing, while simultaneously promoting a better
understanding of our government. This year, nearly 15,000
students from 733 schools participated in the Challenge.
Who is Cooper Lair?
That would be the correct answer to: "This LRCA junior was a finalist in the
game show Jeopardy." Encouraged by his father to take the online Jeopardy
test and attend the live auditions in Atlanta, Cooper Lair can now call himself a
third place finalist of the 2014 Teen Jeopardy Challenge.
Preparing for the tournament required daily practice. Cooper utilized old Teen
Jeopardy games, iPhone apps and read several books by former Jeopardy
contestants. Studying LRCA Quiz Bowl questions, prepared by Coach Danny
Erlandson, was helpful as well.
Cooper is no stranger to Quiz Bowl competitions. In 2012 and 2013, while in
Junior High, Cooper finished as the Overall Individual Champion in 5A competition.
During 2014 Cooper was 5A All-Region, All-State, and he finished in first place in
the North Little Rock Invitational, a competition for 5A through 7A schools.
Cooper’s highlights from the Jeopardy experience include “running a category”
or getting all five answers in a category correct. “It was also fun getting three
different Daily Double answers correct, including a ‘true Daily Double’ in the
finals,” said Cooper. With a third place finish in the finals Cooper walked away with winnings totaling $31,200. “The check was sent to me
the day the last episode aired, and yes,” Cooper says with a smile, “it is liquid cash.” Cooper’s dad is quick to reply “cash that will all be used
for college.” Overall it was an amazing experience for Cooper, his family, and all of his supporters and fans at Little Rock Christian Academy.

Seniors Build Relationships with
ACCESS Students
n 2011, Little Rock’s ACCESS school, which offers
full-time education, therapy, training and activities for
children with learning disabilities, was in the midst of
construction of a new therapy gym. Mrs. Carla Gregg,
a mom with children at LRCA and ACCESS, was looking for
space for the ACCESS spring prom. It was logical that Little
Rock Christian could meet that need for the school which
moved into its former campus on Breckenridge Drive.
While meeting a need is good, the class of 2011 wanted
more. They wanted to provide a memorable evening and
build relationships. So they rolled out a red carpet to a
decorated high school commons and put on their dancing
shoes. A remarkable time was had by all. Parents stayed,
and some LRCA faculty joined in the fun.
That was the beginning of a new senior class tradition that
extends well beyond the prom itself. Mrs. Gregg recalls
that the friendships created between the students have
meant so much more than the physical space provided.
Little Rock Christian students expanded relationships
for those students into new circles. Girls have shopped
together during the summer break, boys have played
baseball, and friendships continue through Skype from
college campuses.
Each spring, a dozen or so of our senior students visit
ACCESS about three or four weeks prior to prom. They
get to know each other, plan the year’s prom theme, and
determine the play list for the DJ. Their leadership reflects
their faith in Christ as they joyfully serve the community.

Ted Dickey
“Ungrateful and selfish is my natural default,” Ted Dickey said
about himself. Despite this, when Ted was invited to join the
Board of Trust he was reminded to whom much is given, much
is required. The “transforming effect” that LRCA was having on
his kids inspired Ted to make that commitment, concluding “it
would, in fact, be a premium return on my investment of time.”
Ted, a lawyer and a self-described “finance bore,” spent the first
part of his career seeing numbers through the lens of his work
at Stephens Inc. Today, he is a partner in two real estate funds
with fellow Little Rock Christian parent, Kevin Huchingson. In the
community, he serves as an advisor to Innovate Arkansas and is
on the boards of the Metropolitan Housing Authority, the University
of Arkansas’ Technology Development Foundation, Search
Ministries and Gravity Ventures. Past honors include selection
to the Arkansas Business “40 under 40” list of business people in
Arkansas and chairing the Arkansas Ethics Commission. LRCA’s finance committee has benefited from Ted’s expertise for several years. Ted additionally provides leadership in developing the LRCA
Foundation for planned giving, along with Bill Scholl, Stuart Miller, and Steve Wade.
Ted and Lila are parents to four Warriors: Grace Ann, Edward, Elizabeth and William. Together, they partner with Little Rock Christian to
properly ground their kids in biblical principles, educate them in core curricula, and launch them with a Christ-centered worldview.

Inspired by a comment that Randy Likens with Search Ministries
made to him: “You could be the only Bible someone ever gets
exposed to,” William Clark is mindful that as a Christian, he is
an example to others at all times.
William serves as a deacon and Life Group Leader at Chenal
Valley Church. He is also on the board of directors for
Simmons Bank, the Rockefeller Cancer Institute Foundation,
UAMS Foundation, and St. Vincent Foundation. He carries the
legacy of his father Bill, a man who gave unselfishly of his time
and resources to help others, through his leadership at Clark
Contractors, LLC.
A trustee of the school since 2011, William led the committee
for strategic planning. He also served on the building
committee during the construction of Warrior Hall. William finds it very rewarding to work with Dr. Arnold to strengthen the school and
continually seek improvement.
William and his wife Christy invest themselves in LRCA because they love the atmosphere. Christy serves on the Warrior Club board and
has devoted hours to managing the Warrior Store. They know that their three sons are loved and prayed for every single day. William credits
the school with excelling at its primary mission of education, and recognizes that the Christian teachings, safe environment, and community
spirit make Little Rock Christian a great place for kids.

Parent Teacher Fellowship
Building Warriors for God's Kingdom with
Leadership and Partnership
L
ittle Rock Christian’s nationally recognized Parent
Teacher Fellowship is designed to include every
parent, grandparent, and staff member from the
school. For this reason, PTF does not collect
membership dues but instead creatively incorporates all
Warrior families in their support of LRCA.
The organization gives leadership to programs that support
classroom and campus enhancements, as well as events
that build our community of staff and families. Well organized
parent volunteers are almost always on campus and at
school events.
The Parent Teacher Fellowship is arranged into eight
teams, each with a unique purpose. This gives parents and
grandparents a specific smaller group in which to participate
based on their individual interests or age of their students.
Elementary, Middle School, Junior High and High School
teams provide support to each of our buildings.
The Parent Teacher Fellowship is led by an experienced Board
of Directors, which includes parents with a variety of past and

current professional experience. Their goal, when placing
volunteers, is to match an individual’s interests, talents, and
time availability with a position they will truly enjoy. Little Rock
Christian greatly benefits from their service in areas such as
development, community-building and school services. The
Friends of the Arts organization has been incorporated into
PTF this year in order to better facilitate the group’s service
to our fine arts programs.
Lynn Beardsley serves as the current
president of the Parent Teacher Fellowship.
Lynn worked professionally as a critical
care nurse for 15 years and has served on
numerous community boards and program
committees. Lynn says, “I initially chose
to get involved at Little Rock Christian
Academy simply because this is where
my children attend school. I wanted to
support their educational experience. Now,
however, I realize a bigger picture. Any
time given, money raised, encouragement
shared all goes to one ultimate goal: Building warriors for God’s Kingdom
through LRCA. It is a real blessing to serve alongside the talented group God
has crafted this year on the PTF Board.”

Warrior Club
Going Above and Beyond to Support
Warrior Athletics
W
arrior Club is the Booster Club which supports
Warrior athletics above and beyond the school
operating budget. Along with raising funds for
capital projects and equipment needs for our
athletic teams, the Warrior Club also provides volunteers
who man concession stands, sell spirit wear, and encourage
a positive spirit at all of our competitions.
Last year, under the leadership of President Jennifer Day,
Warrior club awarded college scholarships to four athletes
and purchased team uniforms for several sports. Over the
summer Warrior Club, combined with Annual Fund giving,
completed substantial facility projects including the addition
of new restrooms at Warrior Field and the remodeling of
coaches’ offices in the Warrior Athletic building.
The expansion and redesign of the Warrior Store has seen
increased sales to begin the school year with a variety
of new brands and warrior-wear styles available. Parent
volunteers lovingly support our coaches with gift baskets
and monthly lunches. This year’s President, Scotty Caroom,
and a board of faithful parents lead the Warrior Club.
The board works tirelessly to raise money through
memberships, season passes, program sales, advertising,
warrior wear sales, concession and gate sales, and the
annual golf tournament held in May. Fans of Warrior
Athletics support our student athletes with their turnout and
school spirit at hundreds of games annually.

ANNUAL FUND
Providing Essential Support for LRCA
A
fter years of capital campaigns to build out
our campus, increase technology, and provide
resources for classroom enhancement, we have
introduced another giving option, the Annual
Fund. It’s designed to provide essential support for our
Christian, independent, collegiate academy.
The Little Rock Christian Board of Trust is committed to
charge what it actually costs to educate a child, no more
or no less, thus leading us to an optimal Annual Fund
model. Our model yields only value-added results. That
means every dollar given to the Annual Fund goes to
enhance, not make up a gap in revenue, in one of five
broad categories determined by school leadership. These
categories include professional development for teachers,
curriculum resources, financial assistance, campus and
equipment enhancements, and an endowment fund for
long-term financial stability.
Why is an Annual Fund so important? It’s simple, because
tuition dollars don’t allow for improvements to be made
on campus. Advancements to our programs and student
classroom experiences, come from the support of our
partners.
During our inaugural year we received the blessing of
$650,000 in gifts to the Annual Fund. Every single dollar
was used to enhance Little Rock Christian Academy.
Thanks to our donors, 32 students whose families fit
our mission but couldn’t afford our full tuition are now
Warriors for 2014-2015. Our elementary nurses’ station
was expanded and improved. The long lines at the Warrior
Field restrooms have become a thing of the past with
new facilities. New curriculum-mapping software was
funded, along with additional development opportunities
for teachers. Designated gifts to the Annual Fund also
provided for new athletic and arts equipment as well as
enhanced technology. Lastly, an endowment fund was
established with $100,000 from Annual Fund giving.
None of this could have happened without families blessing
the school with gifts, some designated and many given
without restriction, to better our Warrior experience. Thank
you to every Warrior who supports our Annual Fund, both
last year and this year and for years to come.
“…Our child has had a wonderful experience at LRCA, and here
was a perfect opportunity to share LRCA with a family in need.
Before this experience, I had no idea the Annual Fund was used for
these types of situations. We feel so blessed to be part of LRCA, and
the Annual Fund enabled us to extend this blessing to others.”
