American Electric Power Buckeye Interactive Commercial Vehicle Group Discover Financial Services Fifth Third Bank Limited Brands Metcalf Design & Printing Ctr Mount Carmel-New Albany Surgical Hospital New Albany Company OSU Medical Center Tween Brands Our Gold Member Companies “If your life is your message, what would your message be?” Jan Allen, executive coach, life strategist, author and motivational speaker, asked this question of Chamber members earlier this year. What’s interesting about this question is that it may cause us to evaluate what we do and how we interact with others on a day-to-day basis. Each encounter that we have with someone is an opportunity to convey that message. Unfortunately, sometimes we get so caught up in achieving a goal or getting things done that we neglect to consider the impact, positive or negative, that we may be having on people along the way. We must realize that each time we meet with our employees, speak to a vendor, talk to our family members, coach kids in sports, or even order a meal at a restaurant we are impacting someone. Accordingly, we need to intentionally think about the message we want to convey and the manner in which it is conveyed in advance of each encounter with others. “Leadership is not about titles, positions or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another.” -- John C. Maxwell. We should all strive to live a life of influence and this month we are honored to have Doug Kridler, CEO of the Columbus Foundation, speak on this topic. Please join us for lunch on Thursday, October 17 at the New Albany Country Club for this event. We look forward to seeing you there! This program is aimed at high-potential women and consists of three two-day sessions over a nine-month period. Each session offers extensive feedback and coaching and seeks a specific, measurable learning outcome for each participant. The seminar emphasizes the critical component of selfawareness and its relationship to how others view us. Participants learn and apply the concept of self-coaching, including how to identify key outcomes and then how to design and execute development plans that get measurable results. Exposure to key research on development, as well as other carefully designed modules, builds significant self-awareness and creates developmental leaps for many. Programs are limited to ten participants from multiple companies. The new docents are Jerry Merritt, John O’Connor, Becky Knore, and students Willow Otten and Meghana Ravi. They assisted with touring the Ealy House to 15 classes of about 25 students each. The docents try to emphasize the things about living in such a house in the 1860’s. For example, the water and bathroom situation, the lack of electricity, the heating and lighting challenges, and the chores that would most likely be done by the children. If anyone else would like to become a docent, there are plenty of time slots to fill; just call Marilyn Regrut at 614-797-4490. Central Ohio Housing Market on Record Sales Pace and there’s no sign of a foreseeable slowdown. The number of houses put under agreement rose in July for the 27th consecutive month. Demand is extremely high for tiny communities with homes in the $200,000 to $400,000 price range selling rapidly. That means, if a house is priced right, sellers can sit back and wait for the best offer. NA Courting Supply-Chain Company The MXD Group of Westerville, formerly known as Exel Direct, and its parent company, Platinum Equity, are considering a lease on two buildings in New Albany for a joint head-quarters. Exel Direct, a specialty delivery and supply-chain company recently rebranded as MXD Group and was bough by Platinum Equity on June 1. Company officials began looking for a new location for “both headquarters and call-center functions” If company officials decide to move to New Albany, the move will create 95 full-time jobs within the next three years. Rocky Fork Metro Park in northern Plain Township now includes 1,003 acres and development could begin before spring 2014 for this new metro park. Columbus, New Albany and Metro Parks committed another $250,000 each year for five years to the park’s funding and Plain Township committed $50,000 each year for five years. Metro Parks had acquired 909 acres for the park, north of Walnut Street between Schott and Bevelhymer roads, but they have recently acquired 94 acres to include more of the Rocky Fork Creek and several forested wetland vernal pools. The conceptual drawings for the park include picnic areas, horse-back riding trails, walking paths, educational areas, preservation zones, places for dog walking and habitat restoration. Touch a Truck The first annual Touch a Truck event was held on Saturday, August 24, 2013 from 11:001:00 at the Public Service Department on Bevelhymer Road. In the days leading up to the event, the service department crew members prepared the vehicles for the event by cleaning, polishing and by mounting additional equipment to the vehicles such as plows and mowing arms. A food tent was erected where hot dogs and chips were served to 240 guests. G&J Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company was generous enough to donate drinks as well as lend us a trailer for serving cold drinks and Meijers provided additional drinks at a discounted price. Rumpke brought a garbage truck for the children to see up close. The New Albany Police Department provided a patrol car and SUV, while also offering the Child ID program to anyone interested in fingerprinting. The Plain Township Fire Department was present with an ambulance, smoke house and a ladder truck. John Deere also participated by bringing a few gators to the event. In addition to the service department staff, seven high school students volunteered to help and were kept very busy handing out drinks from the Pepsi trailer, assisting in parking and distributing stickers at the gates to the children attending. In the end, we estimate that approximately 1100 folks attended on Saturday. We will expect increased attendance as we plan the Touch a Truck event for years to come. 6 | New Albany Chamber of Commerce New Albany Walking Classic The Walking Classic is the largest walking-only race in the United States.
