As the year draws to a close, we can look back with thanksgiving for the challenges overcome, the milestones achieved, and the numerous changes embraced. Many different groups of people have enthusiastically yet tirelessly walked alongside Metropolitan YMCA in our work – and we thank you. Our wonderful volunteers have continuously shown tremendous commitment in reaching out to people in need through their visits, food packing and distribution, house cleaning, mentoring of students. Many have helped to raise funds, as well as given generously during our Flag Day. Our child care Principals and Educators bravely rose to the challenge of accreditation under the Singapore Pre-school Accreditation Framework (SPARK) and undertook rigorous assessment of all aspects of operations, including staff understanding of our vision, mission and core values, set up of physical environment, developing an age-appropriate curriculum and establishing standard procedures. We are pleased to announce that four of the MY World child care branches (Stevens, Bishan, Tampines Changkat and Hougang) cleared the bar. This would not have been possible without the dedication of the entire team and we are extremely encouraged by the commitment to quality. Another three branches, MY World@ Ang Mo Kio, MY World@ Simei and MY World@ Yishun are being refurbished to enable us to better serve the needs of the children and parents. Metropolitan YMCA is part of the oldest and largest youth organisation in the world. The World YMCA is 169 years old. I had the privilege of celebrating with the Seoul YMCA their 110th anniversary, and the Melbourne YMCA their 160th birthday. The YMCA is in 119 countries, committed to empowering youth. This year over 200 youths signed up through MYMCA for causes that they are passionate about. This was our first Youth Symposium which revolved around theme of social responsibility, and at the completion of their projects with various community partners, it was encouraging to hear the teams share their reflections with growing maturity and leadership. One final note – the internet, smart phones and tablets are now ubiquitous, and we decided to do our part in conservation by converting MY Connection to electronic version. This will be our last issue to be printed in hard copy. We hope you will support our initiative to go green. You can check out our page and ‘like’ MYMCA on Facebook, follow us on Twitter or log onto our website at www.mymca.org.sg by scanning the QR code below. If you wish to have a link emailed to you directly or have feedback for us on what you read or saw or heard that can help us impact the community positively, please let us know by dropping us a line at public_affairs@mymca.org.sg . We wish all a blessed Christmas and a wonderful new year. In this festive season may we remember those among us who have suffered misfortune, those who are destitute, lonely, and in need of help and good cheer, and do what we can to give them a hand up. God bless each of you and your families! Phyllis Tan Chief Executive Officer EDITORIAL ASSISTANT Aileen Kong 1 M etropolitan YMCA was introduced to the work of SPARK, the Society for the Promotion of ADHD Research and Knowledge with President Bella Chin, and partnered with them to conduct a unique programme for children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and their parents, called PACE. WHAT IS PACE ALL ABOUT? PACE stands for Parents and Children Empowerment© programme developed by Glenn Lim. It is a psychoeducational and life-skills program for ADHD children and their parents. As a one-of-a-kind programme, it is innovative as it works with both parents and their ADHD children simultaneously. Instead of the usual ad hoc workshops, PACE is an intentional progressive ‘journey’ extended over 3 months. The programme employs a coaching-type approach to equip both parents and their children with necessary skills to build healthy parent-child relationships and manage ADHD behavior effectively. Sharon Rodrigues, Principal, MY World@ Pasir Ris Student Care shares her experience: When I was first approached to be the lead mentor for the PACE Programme 2013, some thoughts that came to my mind was, “Will I be able to handle 11 ADHD children at one time?” Another question was “What characteristics would children with ADHD exhibit?” I was not very sure about this, but my questions were answered from “I’m Not Naughty”, a handbook on ADHD for Parents, CareGivers and Teachers by Lee Swee Huat. It states that: Children with ADHD exhibit the following characteristics. • Failure to pay attention to details or make careless mistakes in schoolwork or other activities. • Difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities. • Difficulty listening to others without interrupting. •Difficulty following through on instructions and completing schoolwork, chores or duties. 2 A TRIBUTE TO ALL MY WORLD TEACHERS FOR THEIR UNSTINTING DEDICATION AS WE CELEBRATED TEACHERS’ DAY IN SEPTEMBER W illiam Ward says… “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates and the great teacher inspires.” At MY World, we hope to inspire. Our teachers are committed to engaging children in purposeful and fun experiences to stimulate learning in all areas of development. Being a teacher comes with great responsibility as you have a major role to play in the development of each child because being a teacher means imprinting upon the children under our care, so that they know that someone really believed in them, cared about them and made life fun for them. There is simply no other job in the world to compare with it. It is hard work but rewards are beyond calculation. Jacques Barzun says… “In teaching you cannot see the fruit of a day’s work. It is invisible and remains so, maybe for twenty years”. I start my day with amazing hugs. They aren’t one handed half hugs. They are tight embraces that say “I love you”. The amazing thing about kids is that they love unconditionally. They love wholeheartedly and they don’t hold back. With kids I can be myself without worrying about what they think. Managing a classroom full of young children can be very challenging. We have to gain respect of the children without scaring them. The best thing about teaching is that you have the ability to make a massive difference in the lives of children and their families. MY CONNECTION • Issue No. 3, 2013 MY CONNECTION • Issue No. 3, 2013 WORKING WITH ADHD THROUGH PACE WHY TEACH? MRS BHOOMIJA KAPUR, Principal, MY World@Yishun • • • • • Difficulty organizing tasks and activities. Dislike of tasks that require sustained mental effort. Losing things necessary for tasks or activities. Often distracted by external stimuli. Forgetful in daily activities. Then another question popped in my mind. “So what is one tool that I can have them embrace? I am no expert on this!” Then I thought of the Traffic Light model. In PACE, it is used to help the children go through the motion of “STOP, THINK and DO”. Alright, so how can this help them? Simple… • STOP – Stop the current activity or behavior that you are doing. • THINK – Think about what you want to do • DO – Carry out the task that you have planned out The traffic light model is but one of such tools taught to the parents and children. Hope that they will be able to put this, as well as the other tools taught at the sessions, to good use. I really thank the Lord for the chance to participate in this programme and make a difference in the lives of others. I have learnt a lot from this programme and if not for the support of those involved, I don’t think I would have been able to complete the sessions with the participants. It was a great joy to see the children grow and learn. Patricia Tham, Senior Teacher at MY World@ Pasir Ris Student Care shares her reflections: “I felt that the programme was meaningful because it serves to empower both parents and children with life skills, foster closer ties and enhance parents-child relationship. Even though the program was long and had high expectations, I noticed all mentors especially the batch of younger mentors were willing to commit their time and did a wonderful job. In fact, they were the ones whom the children loved most and look upon as role models.” APPRECIATING OUR TEACHERS AT MY WORLD… We believe in showing our appreciation for our staff and took the opportunity to organise a dinner for all MY World teachers and staff to celebrate their dedication and efforts for Teacher’s Day. It was a fun-filled evening at the Vine Ballroom on 6 September 2013 with games, performances and a wonderful time of fellowship for all. The Association also gave out iMAD awards to our child care educators. The “iMAD” is the acronym for “I Make a Difference”. Teachers are selected based on their professionalism, attitude towards learning and whether they are able to be a team player and role model. Our heartiest congratulations to our five winners. Keep up the passion and the good work! MY STAR AWARD WINNER Michelle Low, MY World@ Ang Mo Kio MOST POTENTIAL AWARD Vanessa Lim MY World@ Simei Deborah Lim MY World@ Tampines Central OUTSTANDING TEACHER AWARD Brenda Lim MY World@ Hougang Yap Lay Hong MY World@ Woodlands 3 YMCA EUROPE FESTIVAL & WORLD ALLIANCE OF YMCA INITIATIVE AT PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC 4-10 August 2013 Organized by YMCA Europe, the festival theme was Love2Live and 4 MYMCA MANAGEMENT RETREAT 19-21 September 2013 The management team of the Association gathered for a spiritual retreat to acquire insights on leadership, bond as a team and internalise the new vision and mission of the association. Held over three days at the National Community Leadership Institute (“NACLI”) amidst the lush greenery at South Buona Vista, the theme of the retreat was “One Team, One Theme”. Facilitated by Pastor James Chan, Mr Glenn Lim and the trainers at NACLI, the management team underwent a very unique time of bonding as obstacle courses were conquered, new friendships were formed and spiritual insight on leadership were gained, leaving the management team re-charged and refreshed for the challenges ahead. YOUTH EMPOWERMENT SYMPOSIUM (YES!) 27 July 2013 The day event saw over 140 youth participants, 50 VIPs, guests, guest speakers and partner organizations. It was graced by Mr Lawrence Wong, Acting Minister for Culture, Community & Youth, as our Guest-of-Honour. The journey of being selected to be part of National Youth Council’s SHINE Youth Festival and awarded $10,000 for YOUTHsync’s very first event was truly an experience for them. YES! was also an event of President’s Challenge Volunteer Drive (PCVD) 2013. As part of this partnership, a Social Media Workshop on 20 July 2013 was conducted to share with YES! participants tips on using social media as an effective platform for campaigning social issues. Kenneth Yong and Joseph Tay, co-founders of “Youth without Borders” and current students in SMU, gave an inspirational sharing on their passion in building Singapore’s society through volunteerism. They spoke of how they started off with no plans, experiences or organizational structure, but just the desire to do something for the community. YES! focused on four social themes: the elderly, disadvantaged families, children with special needs, and the environment. Our four guest speakers shared on the needs and challenges under each social theme. Workshop sessions were conducted for the students to brainstorm ideas on their service learning project based on feedback given by partner organisations. YES! groups planned and executed their projects within the next 10 weeks after YES!. A celebration of their achieve ments was held on 19 October 2013 at the Lim Kay Kok Upper Room where a graduation ceremony was held for participants of the symposium in recognition of their efforts and achievements. MY CONNECTION • Issue No. 3, 2013 MY CONNECTION • Issue No. 3, 2013 What We’ve Been Up To… true enough, the atmosphere was full of energy and life! In fact, on the first day, finding the way to the festival site was relatively easy as trains and buses from the city was bustling with almost 5000 people from YMCAs around the world. The festival was also the first time for 200 “Change Agents” from 72 countries to come together and meet, face-to-face after almost a year of communicating online. The Change Agent programme is an initiative of the World Alliance of YMCA to gather a group of young people to lead and unite the YMCA global movement into the future with a focus on youth empowerment. The Change Agent training sessions were held throughout the week during the festival, focusing on our role in the change process within the global YMCA, Global Citizenship and two major global initiatives – One Million Voices Research and World —By Gwen Goon, Council 2014. Global Change Agent, MYMCA Singapore MY MASS BIG SWEEP*@ MACPHERSON 7 August 2013 The Macpherson Boys’ Club at circuit road was brimming with over 800 student volunteers from Saint Andrews’ Junior College on a sunny Wednesday morning. The tagline was Wi-Fi: “Whoever interacts finds inspiration”! Enthusiastic volunteers started streaming in with mops, brooms, cleaning detergents but most importantly, they came with a lot of heart. A heart to make a difference in the lives of over 100 destitute, elderly and needy families by cleaning and refurbishing their homes. The event was graced by Dr Maliki bin Osman, Mayor of South East District as he shared, “Many programmes start out with a big bang, achieved a few outcomes, and disappear. I am glad to see that MY Big Sweep has persisted on strongly, while retaining the original objectives.” MYMCA FLAG DAY, “CHANGE FOR A GOOD CAUSE” 31 August 2013 Revolving around the theme “Change for a Good Cause”, this year the Association managed to mobilise almost 700 volunteers to flood our sunny islands and call out to the public for donations to the less fortunate. The association also introduced the concept of “Adopt-aTin” for those who were not able to join us on event day. 22ND COMBINED K2 GRADUATION CEREMONY 18 October 2013 Revolving around the theme of “Around the World in 60 Minutes”, proud parents and guests were treated to a delightful morning of dance and performance as the audience was ‘brought’ around the world in 60 minutes in the form of a story. A kaleidoscope of both colours and vibrancy ensued as our little graduates filled the stage with their sweet voices and genuine performances. The event was graced by Dr Lily Wong, Executive Director of Advent Links-SAUC and Education Centre for Children and Family Studies. 19TH SIX YMCA CONFERENCE IN SEOUL, KOREA 24-28 October 2013 Held for the 19th consecutive year, the Metropolitan YMCA sent a delegation of five to attend the Six YMCA Conference in Seoul, Korea comprising of CEO Ms Phyllis Tan, Ms Catherine Lee (Deputy General Manager, Hospitality Services), Ms Shirley Wong (Senior Manager, Human Resources), Mr Andy Aw (Manager, Training & Development) and Mr Francis Foo (Manager, Community Services).
