Introduction
This document is not a Tivoli NetView User’s Guide but intends to describe how to install and use the
SNMP Package for any EATON Uninterruptible Power Supply.
This document will provide you with all the necessary information about how to install and configure
the EATON Uninterruptible Power Supply and the Tivoli NetView network management platform.

Installation
The EATON control software requires Tivoli NetView Release 7.1 and the Aix 5.1 Operating
System.
If not running, execute the command /usr/OV/bin/ovstart to start NetView applications.
To install the application:
Log on the NMS station as root.
Create the /opt/NMS_UPS/ directory.
Copy the MGEUPS_NETVIEW.tar(.Z) file on the system under /opt/NMS_UPS/ directory.
Go to the /opt/NMS_UPS/ directory.
Uncompress the file using the « gunzip » and « tar » commands
# mkdir /opt/NMS_UPS
# cd /opt/NMS_UPS
# gunzip MGEUPS_NETVIEW.tar.Z (Only for a file downloaded from
www.eaton.com)
# tar xvf ./MGEUPS_NETVIEW.tar
Run the install command
# cd eaton
# ./install.sh
Note: This product may be uninstalled when using the –remove option
# ./install.sh -remove
Warning: During uninstallation, some NetView original files will be converted back to their status
before the package installation. The file list is printed at the beginning of the procedure, before a
confirmation prompt.
If the UPS have already been discovered, shut any NetView session down and execute the following
command to force the symbol update:

UPS Supervision and Operation
3.1
3.1.1
UPS discovery
Automatic discovery (UPS with SNMP MIB)
UPS discovered by NetView are displayed in the Internet/IP sub maps:
Under NetView, double click on the « IP Internet » icon
In the « IP Internet » sub map, double click on a sub-network containing UPSs
In the sub-net map double click on the segment containing the UPSs
Any UPS appears with the following symbol:
Communication is OK, Red color is displayed otherwise):

Manual discovery (UPS without SNMP MIB)
UPS with no SNMP MIB (XML-Web Card or XML-@gent) but with an IP interface, may be manually
configured to be displayed with the correct symbol.
In the NetView map, select the node corresponding to the UPS (same IP address or DNS name)
Right click and select the menu « Edit->Change Symbol Type »
In the “Change Symbol Type“ window, select the symbol class “Device” and the “MGE_UPS”
symbol.

Validate with « Ok »
If the UPS Ethernet card has a Web Interface, it may be useful to have the «UPS Properties» menu
selectable (WEB access home page). To do so, it is necessary to set the node field “vendor” to
«MGE_UPS»:
Right click on the UPS symbol
Select the “Edit->Modify/Describe->Object” menu
In the « Object Description » window, select «General Attributes» and then the «View/Modify
Object Attributes» button

In the «Attributes for Object» window, “vendor” field, select the «MGE UPS SYSTEMS» value
Press OK to Validate
Quit the « Object Description » window (OK button)
Check that the contextual menu « UPS Properties (Web) » is selectable (right click on the symbol)

Important : For XML@agent, the URL home page for the “UPS properties” command must be change
in the /usr/OV/registration/C/mg_web file. Please uncomment the following line:

3.2
UPS monitoring
Any UPS with a SNMP card is manageable with NetView.
Specific menus allos to :
Monitor performance data: Battery status, load …
Display configuration information
Access to the UPS control Web page

UPS status
Select a UPS in the NetView map (Right click on the symbol)
The following menus are selectable in the menu bar « Monitor->UPS » option.
These menus display graphs and tables of UPS specific data.

For any UPS with Web/SNMP card, the «UPS Properties (web)» menu displays the UPS Web
management page:
The others menus display SNMP data:

“Remaining Time ”: Battery Remaining time graph
“Analysis ”: display graph about:

Alarms
Two kinds of alarms are configured for EATON UPSs:
SNMP trap Alarms
Threshold Alarms
3.3.1
SNMP trap alarms
SNMP trap alarms require a pre declaration of the management station in the UPS manager table.
There are three ways to configure the UPS to send traps to the manager:
1. The HTML page « UPS Properties->Manager Table” if the card supports it,
2. The MIB Browser :

The UPS SNMP traps are displayed in the NetView alarm browser, in the « UPS Events » category.

Threshold alarms
To allow UPS monitoring even with no manager pre-declaration on the UPS (see § 3.3.1), a polling of
the most critical data is pre-configured on the NetView station (see § 3.3.2.1 to make it operational).
Polling is followed by a threshold comparison to generate an alarm if exceeded.

3.3.2.1 Polling and threshold alarm configuration
During installation, the application pre-configures the SNMP data polling. Polling is not activated by
default.
The effective start of the polling requires the following operations:
“MGEUPS” “SmartSet” declaration in the NetView database

3.3.2.1.1 « MGEUPS » SmartSet declaration
“MGEUPS” SmartSet declaration defines the UPS setup on the supervised network. This “SmartSet”
limits the polling to the EATON UPS.
On the management station, select the « Tools->Data Collection and Threshold » menu:

Set the name to “MGEUPS”
In the “Definition 1” window, click on the “Modify” button (see above)
In the “Modify definition 1” window, select the “isMGEUPS” attribute and validate with the “OK”
button.
Click on the “Ok” button to close the « Add SmartSet » window.
Click on the “Close” button to close the « SmartSet Editor » window

MGEUPS data collection activation
Pre configured data collections use a NetView SmartSet « MGEUPS » to limit the polling to EATON’s.
After this SmartSet is declared (see § 3.3.2.1.1), MGEUPS data collection can be activated:
On the management station, select the « Tools->Data Collection and Threshold » NetView menu :

Click on a MGEUPS data collection:

Click on the « Resume » button,
