Letter from the Chair
Message from
the President
Dear Fellow Explorers,
Our voyage continues. In keeping with the theme
of our prior annual reports, we are pleased to share
our progress and chart our course for the second 25 years of our enterprise. During
the past two years, we’ve created a ripple that will one day inspire great waves of
discovery.
Following our visioning process in 2011, the board directed a building
programming process and concept design for the future ExplorOcean facility. The
project plan was then submitted to market and financial analysis by a prominent
national engineering consultant, and their report confirmed the feasibility of our
vision.
The facility plan and program envisions a bold and ambitious project to adapt
to a changing world and regional demand for a new kind of cultural visitor
experience—one that offers new discoveries for the explorer in all of us.
The sea is an enchanting and largely unexplored part of planet Earth. With just
five percent of the ocean explored, it is truly the last frontier. Our ocean sustains
all life, and the more we understand it, the greater our chance of survival. It is this
challenge that has inspired us to create for the public what will become America’s
first experiential Ocean Literacy Center and which drives us to continue forward
with the exciting plans we have for ExplorOcean. That said, we will also show
fidelity to the maritime heritage of our founders and offer a lifelong learning and
entertainment experience to our community and visitors.
As you review our financial report, note the growth in our visitor attendance,
education programs, expanded donor base, and the overwhelming validation of
our facility preview center by tourists and local residents alike. Our management
team continues to innovate our galleries and expand the calendar with fun and
informative events.
Already our K-12 educational programs are ushering in the next generation of
ocean-literate explorers as they begin to uncover the secrets of vast waters covering
our blue planet. Under the direction of Dr. Wendy Marshall, our outreach has
attracted tremendous subscription and new partners. Please refer to the education
focus elsewhere in this report.
As we share our accomplishment with you, please know that our progress is due
in great part to you—our donors, partners, members, volunteers, neighbors and
dedicated staff—who have committed yourselves to helping us achieve our goals.
But this only the beginning. Our goal is in sight. We will stay the course and deliver
on our promise to share the adventure, history and natural wonders of the sea.
Yours faithfully,
Timothy C. Collins
Chairman of the Board

Report 2012
Success follows in ExplorOcean’s wake as we mark significant milestones
during this leg of our voyage. All along the way, your personal support
has contributed to our longevity and success—and we are grateful to you
and our community for rallying around us and continuing to share in our
excitement for the future.
During the past year, we celebrated our 25th anniversary and launched our
new ExplorOcean Preview Center. This exhibit has drawn thousands of
visitors, providing each a glimpse of our exciting, immersive, multimedia
experiences and displays, artifacts and historic memorabilia.
Overall ExplorOcean has achieved record-breaking attendance with
over 42,000 visitors last year, representing students, tourists and our
neighbors who took time to visit our galleries and attend our programs and
community events.
We have aligned our staff to better serve our community and provide the
incredible learning opportunities we promised. Our enhanced educational
programming has drawn more participants than ever as we introduce the
mysteries of the sea to an ever-growing number of new explorers.
We have also dedicated ourselves to reaching out to our neighbors, sharing
our plans and gathering input from the community. Through an extensive
community presentation and event schedule, we successfully reached
tens of thousands of residents, school district educators and business and
community organizations. During our travels, we collected hundreds of
comments that demonstrated overwhelming support for our project.
Together with your support, we will proceed to offer an inspiring and
gripping ocean experience that will set the scene for future generations
of families and friends as well as pay tribute to our harbor’s storied
heritage. These efforts will infuse a new level of fun, enrichment and
entertainment—and help build new memories of the 75-year old Balboa
Fun Zone for a new generation.
As we celebrate our significant recent accomplishments and our newly
defined positive and bright future, your steadfast support remains vital
to sustaining and enhancing the cultural role of our institution in our
community and to all those who visit us.
Sincerely,
Rita Redaelli Stenlund
President

Letter from the
Campaign Chair
The ExplorOcean Capital Campaign has embarked on creating America’s
premier Ocean Literacy Center with a targeted grand opening date of 2018.
Here K-12 students and children of all ages, from all backgrounds, will
become ocean literate using 21st century science, technology, engineering,
and math (STEM) skills to discover our blue planet’s hidden secrets.
The success of the campaign will be made possible by the generous support
of the Orange County philanthropic community, particularly the residents of
Newport Beach who have a vested interest in the success of the campaign.
We will attract a broad base of donors passionate about improving our
children’s lives through education and the community revitalization of
Newport Beach’s oldest neighborhood, Balboa Village. The campaign will
offer benefactors highly visible and permanent naming opportunities for the
most significant cultural institution to grace our fine city since its founding
in 1906.
In February 2013, Mayor Keith Curry publicly announced he would
seek the council’s financial support for permanent buildings such as
ExplorOcean and installation of public art by setting aside a portion of the
tens of millions of dollars in developer fees. Having the City involved at
this level assures donors the campaign will be successful.
Portal for the
Next Generation of Explorers
Looking to 2018, we see a bustling new waterfront and enchanting Ocean
Literacy Center for residents and tourists alike to enjoy. By combining
informative interactive educational programs and exhibits with stateof-the-art entertainment experiences, our unique, new ExplorOcean
facility will plunge visitors into humankind’s epic adventure of ocean
exploration and inspire them to uncover the secrets of Earth’s wild
blue frontier.
Our voyage will breathe new life into the historic area of Newport
Beach and enable our visitors to draw inspiration from the great
explorers who braved unknown seas. They’ll meet contemporary
explorers investigating the hot spots of ocean discovery today.
They’ll journey to the deepest, darkest trenches of the ocean
abyss to get a hint of the amazing discoveries that await
them there.
With two spectacular experiential movie theaters; the nation’s
only deep dive submarine simulators; interactive exhibitions;
and the Quarterdeck, an expansive event venue, ExplorOcean
will reenergize the Balboa Fun Zone while giving Newport
Beach a vibrant community gathering place.
The ocean remains largely uncharted, yet it may hold the key to
our future. It’s time to explore!
Another successful achievement of the campaign was bringing aboard
local native Rochelle “Shelley” McReynolds as our highly resourceful
and talented Campaign Officer. Rochelle has a successful 25-year track
record of securing over $750 million for high-visibility capital campaigns
across the United States. Contributors to the campaign will help ensure our
children’s future by inspiring them to become part of a new wave of ocean
exploration and discovery.
Our children need a healthy ocean to enjoy healthy lives. We invite readers
of this biennial report to make a difference and participate in the campaign.
Sincerely,
Tom Pollack
Campaign Chairman
P.S. It is an honor and a privilege to move from Chairman of the Board
to ExplorOcean Campaign Chairman. I wish to thank the board for their
confidence in my skills to lead the organization’s strategic fundraising.
Shelley and I invite everyone to stop by the new campaign office on the
boardwalk to discuss the project in more detail!

Our Voyage So Far
Unlocking Mysteries of the Deep
ExplorOcean’s most significant role is to deliver important educational
programming that will excite ocean discovery and appeal to all ages.
To that end, more attention than ever has been focused on providing
bold new programs for school-age children and their teachers.
From our humble beginnings, 25 years ago, in a one-room facility to our
location today in the heart of the Balboa Fun Zone, our voyage of discovery
continues to unfold. Today, dedicated to providing unique educational
content for ocean explorers of all ages, ExplorOcean is emerging as one
of Southern California’s treasures. Through our exhibitions and collections
showcased in our four galleries—The Steele Model Pavilion, The Newport
Gallery, The East Wing, The Extraordinary People Gallery and our Preview
Center—to our commitment to ocean exploration and literacy, we are
keeping the wonder of the sea alive.
Under the guidance of our newest crew member and Director of
Education, Dr. Wendy Marshall, we are now delivering inspiring new
ocean-themed field trips, camps and leadership programs based on
the Seven Essential Principles of Ocean Literacy, California Science
Standards and 21st Century Learning.
Our Preview Center integrates artifacts and historic photos from our
collection with a sampling of exhibits from our new expansion.
Through generous donations, ExplorOcean has been fortunate to assemble a
notable Permanent Collection which, in part, is showcased in our four galleries.
The Steele Model Pavilion features ship models and video
programs (featuring Transpac and extreme sailing).
Seven Essential
Principles of
Ocean Literacy
Dr. Marshall comes to us from the University of Southern California
where she was the Education Program Designer. She brings more than
17 years of experience in the education field, which includes teaching
and previous roles as Regional Vice President and District Manager
within the education publishing industry. She also served as the
Western Region K-12 Solutions Manager for The College Board (the
nonprofit organization that develops SAT and AP programs). Wendy
earned her AA degree at Orange Coast College; Bachelors at University
of California, Los Angeles; and then her doctorate at University of
Southern California where she earned the Dissertation of the Year
Award. Dr. Marshall maintains a research emphasis and understanding
of current trends in education through ongoing writing, conference
presentations and curriculum development projects with USC.
1. The Earth has one big ocean.
2. The ocean shapes the Earth.
3. The ocean influences Earth’s climate.
The East Wing is home to Sea of Adventure, an interactive
experience that furthers our mission to inspire relationships with
the ocean.
The Extraordinary People Gallery, founded on the premise
that in everyday people there is the ability to become
an inspiration to humanity, a hero to your community
and an example of how to give back, even in the
darkest of times. Most recently home to the Nick
Scandone Paralympic Story, this exhibition will
soon expand with the story of Roz Savage, the
world’s most amazing ocean rower and a National
Geographic Adventurer of the Year for 2010.

4. The ocean makes Earth livable.
5. The ocean supports a diversity of
life and ecosystems.
6. The ocean is connected to us, and we are

In partnership with SeaPerch (sponsored by The Office
of Naval Research), Back Bay Science Center and the
University of Southern California Wrigley Institute
for Environmental Studies, we have developed new
educational tools and curriculum. Our new educational
programs are designed to nurture curiosity, inspire
creative and critical thinking, develop self-confidence
and leadership skills, and unleash a new wave of
discovery.

Robotics Camp Moves Ahead
Ocean robotics is one of the fastest growing engineering fields,
which is one of the reasons our new Robotics Camp is moving
full steam ahead. Featuring Lego® engineering projects based on
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum,
this innovative experience sparks the minds of young children
and teenagers alike. The five-day camp focuses on team
problem solving, creative thinking and, ultimately, building really
cool robots.
Video Series Comes in Waves
The ocean is largely unexplored, and we humans are inextricably
connected to it. To reinforce that connection, ExplorOcean
launched a new science-based, educational and entertaining
video series. The new series meets California Science Content
Standards curriculum for biology, earth sciences and geography
at multiple grade levels and is available online. Focused on
current issues in marine science, the series describes specific
oceanographic and coastal earth science phenomena.
The first wave in the new series contains three videos: The
Wedge, which examines the famous surf location in Newport
Beach; Tide Pools, which explains the delicate ecosystem along
our coastline; and Deep Sea Exploration, which explores the
wonder of descending underwater. In addition to the videos,
curriculum is available including science standard guidelines,
activity sheets and vocabulary. Together, these tools augment
classroom learning and facilitate an active connection to the sea.
Fresh Wind Brings Change, Adventure, Cultural Enrichment and Support
Ocean breezes are bringing fresh opportunities to Newport Beach like
nowhere else in the country, especially when it comes to ExplorOcean.
In 2011, we celebrated the launch of our new ExplorOcean Preview
Center. Hundreds of friends and members were on hand to see us
off. The Preview Center launch was the culmination of two years of
due diligence and intensive planning for the new ExplorOcean Center
and a revitalized Balboa Village. To keep our historic legacy alive, we
created the Fun Zone Entertainment Subsidiary.
We have also nurtured relationships with our neighbors, community
organizations, schools and social service agencies. We have reached
out to them, engaged them in a discussion of our plans, trimmed our
sails accordingly and, thereby, garnered overwhelming support from
the community. Along the way, we also developed new partnerships
with the Office of Naval Research, the USC Wrigley Institute, NewportMesa Schools, the Orange County Department of Education, and the
Newport Beach Jr. Lifeguards, which will continue to carry us toward
our vision.
That vision, of providing a catalyst for the revitalization of the historic
Balboa Village Fun Zone and surrounding seaside area, was confirmed
by the in-depth Economic and Social Impact Study we commissioned,
which illustrated how ExplorOcean could evolve and thrive as a major
cultural destination for both residents and tourists to the Orange
County area.
To lead our business development, local business leader and past
chair Tom Pollack was named chairman of our ExplorOcean Capital
Campaign. Pollack’s goal is to attract a broad base of donors and offer
benefactors highly visible and permanent naming opportunities for the
most significant cultural institution to grace the city since its founding
in 1906. The capital campaign was launched in 2012 and will be a
driving force in our development.
Through our solid business approach, forward-planning and strong
educational focus, we will stay our course and achieve a sustainable,
entrepreneurial business platform. This strong start will carry us on
our journey to new adventures and opportunities for educational and
cultural enrichment.
Popular Lectures Awaken the
Explorer in All of Us
The Waterman Lecture Series, our most popular ongoing program,
continues to grow with favorites like the Seafaring Tales series
and new educational and inspiring talks by explorers, adventurers
and maritime experts. Among the many noteworthy presenters
of late: National Geographic Adventurer of the Year Roz
Savage; Captain Don Walsh, the first explorer to reach
the Mariana Trench, the deepest point in the ocean; and
Zac Sunderland, the youngest person ever to complete a
solo circumnavigation of the world.
