A Note From
The Helm
T
he warm weather is here! We are excited that we
are already into Spring and Summer will be here
before we know it. What a great time to lounge on
your boat at the docks, go out for a little cruise, spend
some time fishing with the family or even venture on
a longer voyage....you really can’t beat this time of year
in Southern California.
One event we hope to see you all at is our Annual
Customer Appreciation BBQ on July 12th. This is our
favorite event of the year and we hope to see you all
there. As always there will be pleanty of food, drinks,
activities for the kids, live music and of course the
raffle. Mark your calendars and see you soon!
Also, please take a look at the article on this page for
useful information on San Diego County’s emergency
notification program. Recent large magnitude
earthquakes remind us we can never be too prepared.
Stay safe and enjoy all the sun and warm weather in
the months to come.

& Bill Thomas
During the 2007 Wildfires, the City of San Diego and
the County of San Diego both employed telephonebased emergency notification systems to assist in the
safe evacuation of over 515,000 residents.
To improve public safety and increase coordination
throughout the region, the City of San Diego has
recently adopted the county-wide Alert San Diego
notification system. Alert San Diego allows the City to
send telephone notifications to residents and businesses
within an area impacted or threatened by an emergency.
The system utilizes 9-1-1 telephone databases, and
is therefore able to contact listed and unlisted landline telephones. If a call is picked up by an answering
machine, the system will leave a voice message. If the
telephone called is busy or does not answer, the system
will redial that number up to three times in an attempt
to deliver the message. Alert San Diego is TTY/TDD
capable.
While every attempt will be made to contact residents in
response to an emergency, there are factors that impact
completion of calls. Those include loss of electrical
power, call volume in the area reducing available
lines, busy connections, hang ups, caller ID blocking,
etc. Residents should not wait for an emergency call.

Good in the Bad
The wind was both bad and ugly, in that there
was none. When beginning a long distance race
(approx. 50 miles) and starting in 3 to 4 knots of
wind with less in the forecast. This was one of
those times the weatherman’s forecast was spot on.
The wind started light and dropped to nothing.
The good was that the wind was so light and the sea
so flat, the whales that abounded that day were very
visible. We must have seen at least a dozen whales
during the daylight hours as we drifted toward
the first mark. There was a group of three leaping
from the water almost as dolphins do. It was truly a
wonderful treat. As the day turned into night, the
whales were no longer visible, but because the air was
so still, we could hear them . In the darkness it felt
as if we were surrounded by whales as they spouted
everywhere. One popped to the surface not ten feet
away. It startled me a
lot but it disappeared
again just as quickly
as it rose up. It was a
very clear, starlit night.
The sea was so dead
calm we could see the entire starlit sky reflected
deep in the water. It was beautiful, but it made for
very bad racing. I guess there’s a moral in that storyAs always, any day at sea is a good day.

If you are concerned about your safety and welfare,
please leave the area and monitor local radio stations
for further information (KOGO AM/600 and KLSD
AM/1360).
Because the system uses 9-1-1 telephone databases,
only land-line numbers are in the system. If you have
a Voice over IP (VoIP) or cellular telephone and would
like to be notified through that device, or if you would
like an email notification, you must self-register those
telephone numbers and/or email address with the
system.
To register your VoIP telephone, cellular telephone,
or email address, and to view the Frequently Asked
Questions for more information, please click on the
link below.
If you registered with the City’s previous emergency
notification system (i.e. Reverse 911®) before or on
January 22, 2009 your data is already loaded into the
Alert San Diego system.
For more information and to
register your phone number please

right.

REWIND<<<
Celebrating St. Patrick ’s Day
began full of warm weather and mild breezes,
followed by corned beef sandwiches, green beer
and wine. We couldn’t have asked for more. CYM
Boaters gathered and tried their hand at the Gold
Coin Toss.
The “gold coins” were feather light plastic, so
tossing them into an upturned top hat from behind
a line on the floor wasn’t as easy as it looked. One
contestant remarked it was like tossing feathers
in the wind and hoping they landed somewhere
in the vicinity. Sort of like horseshoes, except that
“close” didn’t count. Each coin that landed in the
hat was one point. Each competitor got two tries
(8 coins at a time) with a cumulative total.
Jenny Freeman (who initially insisted she didn’t
want to play) was the grand prize winner with a
total of 14 points out of a possible 16. The field
behind her had a 5 way tie, so we had a tiebreaker
toss off with Steve Pepper and Rich Freeman
tying with 7 out of a possible 8. So of course
that tie had to be broken with yet another toss
off. Rich Freeman won with 5 points to Steve’s 3.
The Freeman family was definitely the big winner,
taking both first and second place.
It was such fun, everyone said they were going
to practice up for next year. Jenny had already
started practicing for that perfect score before
the party even ended.
You can never be too careful that your fire
extinguishers are in proper working order. A
green arrow does not necessarily mean that
the extinguisher is charged. In addition, it is
a requirement to have your fire extinguishers
in serviceable condition.
We
recommend that you check your fire
extinguishers and if they are approaching or
have exceeded their expiration dates, have
them serviced.
Spring
Cleaning!
Winter can certainly be a time of
accumulation and hibernation. We
need your help keeping docks and
the area around boats clean and
tidy.
An excess of items can present
a safety issue as well as being an
eyesore.
Thank you for your cooperation.
