BLAZERS BEGINS BILL CLARK ERA IN IMPRESSIVE FASHION
s The Blazers opened the 2014 season and the Bill Clark era at UAB in impressive fashion Saturday as the
Blazers outscored visiting Troy 48-3 over the final 58:31 of the game en route to a 48-10 victory. Clark
was named the Blazers’ head coach on Jan. 22, 2014.
s Clark took the helm of the UAB program after spending one year as the head coach at Jacksonville
State. He led the Gamecocks to an 11-4 record, their most victories in 21 years, as JSU earned an at-large
berth in the NCAA FCS playoffs and final national ranking of No. 10.
GAMEDAY STORY LINES
s UAB is in its 24th season of intercollegiate football and its 19th at the NCAA Division I level.
s The Blazers will be playing Mississippi State for the sixth time overall and the first time since the
2011 season. MSU has won the last four matchups and leads the series, 4-1.
s With the 48-10 win over Troy to open the season, the Blazers posted their first season-opening
victory since the 2009 campaign.
s Playing opponents from the Southeastern Conference is nothing new for UAB. The Blazers have
played 22 games against SEC teams — 24 if you count single contests against Missouri (1999) and
Texas A&M (2009) before the Tigers and Aggies were members of the league. UAB is 2-20 against
SEC foes. Only twice have the Blazers played home games against an opponent from the SEC with
both coming against Mississippi State (2006 and 2011).
s The Blazers were just shy of reaching the 500-yard mark in total offense against Troy finishing
with 489 (339 rushing and 150 passing). Sophomore running back Jordan Howard rushed for 179
yards and two touchdowns while tight end Kennard Backman — named to the Mackey Award
preseason watch list this summer — caught a pair of touchdown passes in the win over the Trojans.
s The Blazers had two players named to the All-Conference USA first team during the summer.
Wide receiver JJ Nelson and punter Hunter Mullins were both tabbed to the first unit by the
league’s coaches. Mullins, in addition, was named the C-USA Special Teams Player-of-the-Year.
s The Blazers return eight starters on offense and eight on defense, as well as both their kicker
and punter, from last season.
s Junior quarterback Cody Clements made his first start at UAB last Saturday. The junior college
transfer from Cerritos College was an efficient 13-for-19 for 152 yards with a pair of touchdown
passes.
s The Blazers’ sophomore running back Jordan Howard rushed for 881 yards last season as a true
freshman as he split time with Darrin Reaves who left UAB a year early and is now a member of the
Carolina Panthers. Howard’s rushing total was the second-best nationally among freshmen in 2013.
s JJ Nelson has averaged 20.3 yards per reception on his 83 catches during his career. He caught
two for 65 yards in the season opener against Troy.
THE COACHES
s Bill Clark (Jacksonville State, ‘90) is in his first season as the head coach at UAB. Clark came to
UAB after spending one year at Jacksonville State where he led the Gamecocks to an 11-4 record
and a berth in the NCAA FCS playoffs. JSU concluded the year ranked No. 10 in the final FCS poll
and recorded its most wins since the 1992 season.
s Dan Mullen (Ursinus, ’94) is in his sixth year as the head coach at Mississippi State. Mullen has
compiled a record of 37-28 during that time. He had led the Bulldogs to three bowl appearances
during that time. He was offensive coordinator at Florida (2005-08) prior to going to MSU.

MEDIA SERVICES
Call Us UAB!
Please note that there are only two correct
versions of our name, the acronym “UAB,” or
the full “University of Alabama at Birmingham.”
In addition, the Associated Press sports stylebook now uses UAB on first reference, not
Alabama-Birmingham.
We are not:
Alabama-Birmingham,
Ala.-Birmingham, or U.A.B.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham
(UAB) has been an autonomous member of
the University of Alabama system since 1969,
and has had an intercollegiate athletic program
since 1977. UAB is sometimes confused with
the University of Alabama (Crimson Tide),
which is located in Tuscaloosa; while this is inevitable, it is important to note that the two
are indeed separate institutions. In addition,
the UAB name is often altered by various media, opponents, merchandisers, etc.
Postgame Interviews
UAB has a closed locker room policy after
each game. There is NO player availabilty on
the field immediately after the game except
for network television when requested ahead

Friday: Travel and practice schedule TBA (check with the UAB media relations office for updates).
Saturday: Coach Clark will address the media approximately 15 minutes following the conclusion
of the game; the UAB locker room and training room are closed to the media at all times; requested

2014 UAB FOOTBALL
HEAD COACH
BILL CLARK
Bill Clark, who guided Jacksonville State to a record-setting
season in 2013 and the highest
NCAA Division I final ranking in
school history, was named head
football coach at UAB in January, 2014, becoming the fifth head
coach in Blazers’ history.
Clark has more than 20 years of
experience, having spent a year
as the head coach at Jacksonville
State before coming to UAB. Prior
to taking the helm of the Gamecocks’ program, Clark was
assistant head coach and the defensive coordinator at South
Alabama. Before joining the Jaguars’ staff, he was one of the
most successful high school coaches in the State of Alabama.
Clark led the Gamecocks to an 11-4 record last season, their
most victories since the 1992 campaign when JSU won the
NCAA Division II National Championship. That number set
an Ohio Valley Conference record and is also the most wins
by a first-year head coach.
Jacksonville State earned an at-large berth in the FCS Playoffs
and captured two victories -- including a second round win
over No. 6 McNeese State -- to reach the quarterfinals. The
wins were the Gamecocks’ first-ever in the NCAA Division I
playoffs. Jacksonville State concluded the 2013 season ranked
No. 10 in the final FCS poll.
Clark became the Jacksonville State head coach after five outstanding seasons at South Alabama as the Jaguars’ defensive
coordinator.
Clark joined South Alabama in 2008 after spending nine years
as head coach at Prattville (Ala.) High School where he led the
Lions to national prominence. He won a pair of Class 6A State
Championships as his last two teams won 30 straight games,
while the 2007 squad was ranked No. 2 in the nation in USA
Today’s national high school poll.
Following his final season at Prattville High School, he was
named the Alabama High School Athletic Association Coach
of the Year and was also selected as the Schutt Southeast Regional Coach of the Year.
He first led the Lions to the Class 6A state playoffs in 2000,
his second season guiding the program. Clark earned his first
postseason victory a year later, helping Prattville advance to
the quarterfinals before falling to the eventual state champion,
which is where the Lions’ season would end each of the next
two falls.
Clark served on the staff of the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star
Classic three times, including as head coach in the summer
of 2007. He also served as head coach in the 2004 NorthSouth All-Star Game. Clark began his coaching career as an
assistant at Piedmont High School (1990-91) and also has
coaching stints at Tuscaloosa County High School (1992-94),
Coffee County (Ga.) High School (1995-96) and Dothan High
School (1997-98).
He graduated from Jacksonville State in 1990 with a degree
in physical education. Clark and his wife, Jennifer, have two
children: daughter, Katie (19) and son Jacob (17).

s UAB has a young football program compared to most of its opposition. The Blazers
went through their first intercollegiate football season in 1991 as a member of NCAA
Division III.
s The Blazers moved to Division I-AA two seasons later in 1993, remaining at that level
three years before making the transition to Division I-A during 1996 season.
s The 2014 season represents the 24th season of football for UAB.
Experience Returns For Blazers In 2014
s When UAB takes the field this fall, the Blazers will have a large group of returning letterwinners and starters from last season. Heading into preseason practice, UAB listed 20
returning letterwinners on offense, 24 on defense and three specialists. The Blazers have
eight returning starters on offense and defense, plus both their placekicker (Ty Long) and
their punter (Hunter Mullins).
Blazers Had Another Potent Offensive Season In 2013
s The Blazers averaged nearly 400 yards per game on offense for the 2013 season. UAB
finished with an average of 392.9 yards on offense, including a 178.1 rushing yards average
and a 214.8 passing yards mark.
Pair Of First-Time Opponents, Two SEC Teams On Schedule
s The Blazers will play a pair of schools for the first time during the 2014 season while
they take on a pair of Southeastern Conference opponents. UAB plays road games against
Mississippi State (Sept. 6) and Arkansas (Oct. 25) this fall, representing the 13th consecutive year that the Blazers have played at least one opponent from the SEC.
s The Blazers will meet Alabama A&M (Sept. 13) and Arkansas for first-time meetings.
s The Blazers have played Mississippi State five times in their history with the Bulldogs
holding a 4-1 series advantage. UAB won the first meeting — 27-13 at Starkville in 2004
– between the schools, but State has come back to win the last four.

The UAB defense pitched a first-half
shutout, but Mississippi State scored
three second-half touchdowns to
leave Legion Field with a 21-3 victory.
The Blazers led 3-0 at the half on a
Ty Long field goal before Mississippi
State’s Tyler Russell replaced an ineffective Chris Relf at quarterback and
threw three touchdown passes.
Russell, who played in only two of
the first five games this season, started
the second half for the Bulldogs (3-3).
On his second possession he led the
Tigers on a seven-play, 89-yard touchdown drive, capped by an 18-yard pass
to Marcus Green.
Russell connected with Chad Bumphis for a 57-yard touchdown pass on
the first play of the fourth quarter, and
then later hit Malcolm Johnson with a
20-yard scoring pass. Russell completed 11-of-13 passes for 166 yards.
The first-half shutout was the first
for UAB since the final game of the
2008 season when the Blazers held
UCF without a score. UAB also held the
Bulldogs to just 118 yards in the opening 30 minutes.
UAB quarterback Jonathan Perry,
making his second start in place of an
injured Bryan Ellis, completed 18 of 36
passes for 195 yards and also ran for
44 yards on nine carries. Pat Shed, a
Starkville, Miss., native playing against
his hometown team, ran for 73 yards
on 16 carries and added a game-high
five catches for 32 yards.
UAB receivers Jackie Williams and
Patrick Hearn extended their reception
streaks to 17 and 16 games, respectively. Williams’ streak is the fourthbest in UAB history, while Hearn’s is
tied for fifth.

JORDAN HAD OUTSTANDING FRESHMAN SEASON
s Running back Jordan Howard is coming off an outstanding true freshman
season for the Blazers. He rushed for 881 yards and a pair of touchdowns
while averaging a team-best 6.1 yards per attempt. Howard, who split playing
time with All-Conference USA running back Darrin Reaves, ranked second
nationally among FBS freshmen in rushing yards. He was named to the C-USA
All-Freshman Team following the season.
MULLINS NAMED C-USA PRESEASON
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER-OF-THE-YEAR
s Senior Hunter Mullins holds the UAB record for punting average at 44.0
yards per kick. In July, he was named the preseason Special Teams Playerof-the-Year for Conference USA, as voted by the league’s 13 head coaches.
Mullins, who is entering his third season as the Blazers’ starting punter, was
also tabbed to the first-team All-Conference USA team, joining teammate Jamarcus Nelson who was named as one of the first-team receivers.
PLENTY OF FIREPOWER BACK ON OFFENSE
s The Blazers are expected to again feature a high-powered offense as they
return eight starters from the 2013 season. Wide receiver Jamarcus Nelson is
one of the most dynamic players in college football and enters his final season
at UAB with a career average of 20 yards per catch. Nelson has been named
to the Watch Lists for both the Biletnikoff and Hornung Awards.
s Tight end Kennard Backman has seen his numbers improve with each of
his first three seasons and is expecting a banner senior campaign. Backman
was tabbed to the Mackey Award Watch List in July. Sophomore running back
Jordan Howard rushed for nearly 900 yards as a true freshman and he wasn’t
even listed as the team’s feature back.
s UAB will have to fill the voids left with the departure of running back Darrin Reaves (928 yards, 12 rushing TDs) and at quarterback. The Blazers do not
have a quarterback on the roster who has thrown a pass in a game while at
UAB. junior Cody Clements, who originally enrolled at Washington State, participated in spring practice in 2014 after coming to UAB in January. Clements
emerged from spring practice as the No. 1 quarterback, but redshirt freshman
Jeremiah Briscoe was impressive in fall camp and is also expected to compete
for playing time, if not the job.

GANUS IS BLAZERS’ TOP RETURNING TACKLER
s UAB junior Jake Ganus is the Blazers’ top returning tackler with 93 stops
registered in 2013. Ganus also had a team-high 8.0 tackles for loss. He either
led the team, or tied for the team lead, in tackles in seven of 12 games in 2013.
2014 UAB FOOTBALL
NELSON, BACKMAN, MULLINS NAMED TO
PRESEASON WATCH LISTS
s UAB seniors JJ Nelson, Kennard Backman and Hunter Mullins were all
named to watch lists for their respective positions.
s Nelson, a wide receiver from nearby Midfield,Ala., was named this summer
on a pair of lists — the Paul Hornung Award and the Biletnikoff Award. The
Hornung Award is presented annually to the nation’s most versatile player
while the Biletnikoff Award goes to the top receiver.
s Backman, a three-year starter at tight end, is listed on the John Mackey
Award Watch List. The Mackey Award recognizes the country’s outstanding
tight end each season.
s Mullins, from Tallassee, Ala., is on the Ray Guy Award list for the second
consecutive year. The Ray Guy Award is given each season to the nation’s
top collegiate punter. Mullins is UAB’s career record holder in average yards
per punt.
NELSON = EXPLOSION PLAYS
s There’s no doubt that when UAB wide receiver JJ Nelson is on the field,
he’s a threat to break a big play.
s Nelson has averaged 20.3 yards per reception in his career with 1,683
yards on 83 catches. He ranks among UAB’s all-time leaders in receptions,
receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
s Nelson has 19 touchdowns (16 receiving, 1 rushing, 2 on returns) in his
three-year career and 12 of those have covered distances of 40 yards or more.

Cody Clements passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, while Jordan
Howard rushed for two more in helping
the UAB football team beat Troy University 48-10 on Saturday.
The win gives Blazer head football
coach Bill Clark a victory in his debut as
UAB’s coach. It marks the first seasonopening victory for the Blazers since the
2009 season and the first for a UAB football head coach in his opening game.
UAB opened its 2014 season and the
Clark era by falling behind Troy 7-0, but
the Blazers rattled off 24-straight points
going in to halftime behind Clements
and Howard efforts.
The Trojans took the opening drive
75 yards on five plays, less than two minutes into the game, but the Blazers outscored the vistitors 48-3 and held Troy to
only 197 yards the rest of the game.
Howard, who rushed for a career-best
179 yards and went over 1,000 yards in
only his 12th game as a Blazer, routinely
shredded the Trojan defense en route to
74 first-half rushing yards and UAB’s first
score, a 2-yard touchdown run.
Clements, making his first start for
UAB, then sandwiched a 34-yard field
goal by Ty Long with a pair of touchdown passes to Kennard Backman to
put UAB up 24-7.
Ryan Kay cut the UAB lead to 24-10
with a 47-yard Trojan field goal as time
expired in the first half.
Troy failed to capitalize on a pair of
early second half UAB turnovers, before
the Blazers sealed the win with Clement’s 55-yard touchdown pass and Howard’s 1-yard TD run in the third quarter.
Senior D.J. Vinson also eclipsed the
100-yard rushing mark for the Blazers,
finishing with 106 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, linebacker Jake Ganus
led the Blazers with seven tackles, one
tackle for loss and a forced fumble. Defensive end Diaheem Watkins added six
stops with a pair of sacks and two tackles for loss.
