Application for Support as a UAB Institutional Core Facility
The UAB Institutional Core Facility Program is intended to promote the development and operation of outstanding Core
Facilities that can serve the needs of UAB investigators. The program is designed to assist cores in developing sound
business plans, developing and maintaining robust standard operating and quality assurance procedures, providing
customer-focused service to facilitate the advancement of scholarship, and to assist in maintaining the financial stability
of the core.
Designation as a UAB Institutional Core Facility carries with it the mandate to:
 Provide investigators with outstanding and responsive services;
 Provide a venue for collaborations among investigators across unit boundaries;
 Facilitate the recruitment and retention of faculty;
 Provide training for faculty, staff and students in the use of equipment and Core-specific methods;
 Enhance the research mission of the institution through Core-based education or outreach activities;
 Develop long term plans to ensure that the Core will be able to adapt to the changing needs of the user base.

ELIGIBILITY
Specific criteria must be met in order to be eligible for designation as a UAB Institutional Core. These are:
 Cores must be available to all investigators on campus
 Cores must have a minimum of 20 unique extramurally funded users/yr
 Cores must be able to demonstrate community engagement, e.g. organization of workshops, symposia, or
courses

Complete the application below in 11-point font with no less than 0.5” margins. Please adhere to the space limitation
for each item. Call or email Dr. Kent Keyser (934-7757; ktkeyser@uab.edu) with questions about the application.
Completed applications must be submitted to Dr. Keyser 5:00 PM, June 15, 2015.
BODY OF THE APPLICATION
1. Summary – On up to two pages, provide an overview of the Core, including its mission, leadership, oversight (for
example internal or external advisory committees – list members), and a list of services currently offered. List Pseries grants (start and end dates) that support the Core, etc. Briefly describe the UAB-centric enrichment
activities such as workshops, symposia, faculty, student, and staff development activities, classes, etc., that the
Core has supported since 04/01/2012. On a separate page, please include a list of funded Core users during the
past 12 months who have provided fiscal support to the Core.
