FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING COURSES
Where can I find what courses are offered at UAB?
Courses can be found at: https://ssb.it.uab.edu/pls/sctprod/bwckschd.p_disp_dyn_sched
How many courses should a student take and how many are allowed?
Most international students take 4 courses, although you are allowed to take up to 5. The minimum
number of courses you must take is 4.
How many days per week will I be in class?
It varies but you can follow the below rules when planning your schedule.
On the UAB course website it will say under the “Day” column:
TR this means it is a Tuesday and Thursday class
MWF this means it is a Monday, Wednesday and Friday class
MW this means it is a Monday and Wednesday class
M this means it is a Monday only class
T this means it is a Tuesday only class
W this means it is a Wednesday only class
R this means it is a Thursday only class
In the “Time Column” these are the times the class will last on all the days it is held. For example
MWF class 9:00-10:00am. This means every Monday, Wednesday and Friday you will have class
from 9:00-10:00am. You cannot schedule any other classes during this time.
Do I have to attend every class?
At UAB, as in most US universities, professors frequently require attendance of all classes. Your
attendance and participation is often part of the grade you will earn for the class. In addition, you may
have quizzes or exams throughout the semester and if you miss too many classes you may not do
well on these exams. This system may be very different from your university’s system because your
grade at UAB is dependent upon more than just a final exam.
Are certain course numbers easier than others?
As a rule of thumb, course numbers beginning with 100 are first year “freshman” courses; course
numbers beginning with 200 are second year “sophomore” courses; courses beginning with 300 are
third year “junior” courses and course numbers beginning with 400 are fourth year “senior” courses.
Courses become more advanced as the number gets higher. Typically a 300 level class is taken by
juniors who have 1 more year until they complete their studies.
Will you enroll me in courses?
Please refer to the BlazerNet Registration Quick Guide which will show you how to register yourself
online. If you have any problems or questions about enrolling for classes please don’t hesitate to
contact us.
What if I do not like one (or more) of the courses that I am registered for?
You will have the opportunity to change your schedule once you arrive on campus. Please refer to
the UAB academic calendar found at https://studentaffairs.sass.uab.edu/calendar/search.asp?id=2.
