CTHS Mission Statement - Our actions will ignite the genius and nurture the goodness within us all.
1
Principal’s Note
Welcome back to the 2015-16 school year. While
it seems like we just graduated the Class of 2015 Famous, we have already started our new journey,
a journey that will be filled with continued school
improvement. We will welcome 723 freshmen and are
projected to have 2822 students and 253 faculty
and staff members. We will have 37 new faculty and
staff with 11 of those being additional positions to
support our growth. I am honored to be the principal
of such a wonderful high school, and look forward to
developing and renewing relationships with students,
parents, staff and community members.
Our goals this year will be to continue our work
on improving our student performance data
and ensuring inclusive excellence, while helping
our students to understand the importance of
perseverance through a growth mind set. As a
school we will commit to increasing academic rigor
in an effort to continue our ACT growth and
improved graduation rate. This focus will ensure
student achievement and our commitment to inclusive
excellence in academics, activities and athletics.
Our theme will be: True Grit, True Glory; success
is achieved with passion and perseverance!
CT continues to be a remarkable school community
that truly emphasizes a student balance of
academics, athletics and activities. We strive every
day to prepare our students to be critical thinkers
and responsible citizens. We have a continued
commitment to maintaining a safe and orderly
learning environment, while encouraging each
student to maximize his/her preparation for college,
work and other post-secondary options.
2
CT’s mission statement, Our actions will ignite
the genius and nurture the goodness within us all,
truly guides our work. It will take all of us, working
together, to continue this incredible journey of
excellence; thank you for your partnership in this
endeavor.
I invite you to take an active role in your student’s
education by empowering your student to explore
the many opportunities offered at Cherokee Trail
while continuing to encourage your student to
excel in his/her educational goals. I also ask you
to use the many communication tools we have in
place such as Power School, Schoology, Cougar
Tracks, and our web site, to keep you inform about
your student’s progress and school events. Please
also make sure all email addresses are up to date
as we use these as our primary source for direct
communication.
I personally invite you to our Back to School
Night on August 26th. This night will enable you
to meet your student’s teachers and understand
the academic expectations of each course. Please
introduce yourself if our paths cross at the various
school events. I cherish the relationships we continue
to build. Let’s make Cherokee Trail’s 13th year our
best to date.

Final exams can be a stressful time but it doesn’t
have to be. Remember that everything your
student has been learning so far this semester
is great preparation for final exams. It is not too
early to start preparing! As final exams approach
in May, following Memorial Day weekend,
students should be focused on doing the best
job that they can. Final exams are 20% of the
final course grade in the class, so doing well is
very important. Once final exams are taken, final
grades will post to the permanent transcript.
Here are some tips on how to be best
prepared for final exams:
1.
Don’t procrastinate! Procrastination
causes unnecessary stress. Plan ahead.
2.
Find a place to study- a place that is
quiet, comfortable and free of distractions (no cell
phones, TV, computers, game systems).
3.
Study with a partner or form a study
group- this can be a great resource for you but
remember to stay focused.
4.
Get enough rest- don’t pull an all nighter!
Students who stay up all night or rely on coffee
to stay awake often lose concentration and focus
during the actual exam.
5.
Keep things in perspective- take final
exams seriously, but also take breaks during your
study and prep time for them. Get a snack and
get refocused.
6.
Get help from your teachers in advance.
7.
Complete all study guides- many
questions will likely show up on the exam.
On the day of the exam:
•
Arrive early
•
Be awake
•
Eat a small breakfast
•
Be prepared- have extra pens and pencils
and your calculator
•
Wear comfortable clothes
•
Try to relax
•
Review your notes
•
Do your best- remember that you have
studied hard and are prepared. Have confidence in yourself.

CTHS Visual Arts Department
Congratulations to our seniors who graduated! The year has come to a close and we have had a
wonderful year and have seen an amazing amount of art from students.
A few changes are occurring in the department. We are sad to say goodbye to Ms. Laura Baszynski.
She has been an integral part of this team and the school. Her ambitious spirit, creativity and love of
the arts will live on through what she has instilled in her students. She is an amazing teacher, masterful in her skill, and will be sorely missed by all of us here at CT. Ms. Baszynski will be moving on to
Michigan State where she will be perusing her Masters of Fine Arts in ceramics.
Ms. Provenzano-Doll will be joining our team as the new teacher for the 3D classes. She comes from
Douglas County and will be a great addition to our school.
The students in Advanced Placement (AP) are already starting their senior portfolios as summer
homework. We are excited to see what they have created when we return in August! Remember,
there are summer art shows and exhibits throughout the state and we encourage each of you to visit
these incredible shows.
2015-2016 Immunization Requirements
Changes to the State of Colorado Immunizations requirements for the 2015-2016 school year may
affect your student. Beginning July, 2015, Colorado will require that all students receive two doses of
the Varicella (Chickenpox) vaccine or provide documented history of Chickenpox disease in order to
attend school.
If your student does not already have two doses of this vaccine, please contact your health care provider and schedule an appointment as soon as possible. When your student receives the immunization, please send a copy of the updated record to the Cherokee Trail High School clinic.
You can send the record to the clinic fax number 720.886.2258 or email it to the school nurse, Tracy
Altschuler. The updated immunization record must be received by the start of the 2015-2016 school
year.
More information regarding this change can be found at https://www.colorado.gov/pacivic/cdphe/
school-immunizations. Please contact our school nurse with any questions or concerns you may
have.

Offering practical ideas to parents to improve success
in school, enhance parenting skills and involvement,
and help teens prepare for the future and face
challenges. We want to strengthen the home and
school partnership and boost individual and school
success. (c) 2014 Resources for Educators
Three tips to high School Success
Organization. Being
organized lets your teen
be more productive,
because they’ll have what
they needs when they
need it. Suggest that she
try these ideas:
1. Create Workspace.
Your student should have
a comfortable place to
work that is well lit and
free from distractions. It
is best if they find a place
they can dedicate to
schoolwork so they start
associating it with getting
things done.
2. Stock supplies.
Keeping graph paper,
index cards, highlighters,
etc. on hand will help
your teenager stay on
task. They won’t have to
stop what they are doing
to search for an item.
3. Sort Papers. Multiple
classes mean several
sets of notebooks, only
some of which need
to come home on any
given day. Your student
can keep track by using
separate color-coded
materials for each class
so they can easily spot
each subject. Each
week they should sort
the papers from the
week before to ensure
all materials are filed
accordingly.
Time Management.
Knowing what is on your
student’s agenda will
give your teen a sense of
control and help prevent
stress. It also help to
ensure they have time
for socializing. Here are
some tips to help them
get a handle on their day:
1. Keep calendars and
to-do lists. Your student
needs to see how much
time they have and how
they use it. Suggest that
they use a daily planner
to schedule their time
in half-hour increments.
Keep the planner with
them at school so
they can update it with
assignments, tests, and
due dates.
2. Schedule study time.
Encourage your high
schooler to set aside
specific times to study,
picking periods when they
are more alert. To get the
most of their day, they
should take advantage
of free time. During study
hall, between school
and practice/work, etc.
This can be a good time
to review notes, study
vocabulary, or go over
any questions at the end
of chapters.
in discussions are a
big boon to your child’s
learning. Then they can
review at home seeing
the material for the
second time.
3. Overcome Time
Wasters. Help your
student learn to say “no”
to distractions that can
throw them off track.
Say a friend calls and
they are supposed to be
researching a science
project. Help them set
boundaries and offer
alternative times in their
schedule. Have them turn
off their phones and limit
access to social media.
2. Stay focused. Study
time doesn’t benefit
your teen if their mind
wanders. They can
learn to stay focused
with simple techniques
such as visualization,
mental reminders to stay
present, getting good
sleep, and eating right.
Studying. Good Study
skills help your high
schooler be efficient so
they can get the most
out of what they learn
in school in the least
amount of time. Smart
students know secrets
like these:
1. Start at school.
Studying doesn’t begin
when your teen sits
down at home. It starts
when they are in school
each day. Being in class,
listening, taking good
notes, and participating
3. Shape information.
Working with information
is like molding clay on a
pottery wheel. Your teen
can take the material
and shape it into any
form that makes sense
to them. When reviewing
notes, he might create
charts, graphs, or
drawings to help digest
the material. They can
pull cru-cial material and
create study sheets for
review.

What Do You Teach?
CE English 12, CE College Lit, CE College Comp, &
Competitive Speech & Debate
How Long Have You Been Teaching?
Eight years
How Does Educational Technology Play a Role in Your Classroom?
I use edtech constantly. My CE English 12 and my College Lit & Comp students have virtually every
assignment, from online discussions, quizzes, warm-ups, and essays on Schoology, Google Docs, or
turnitin.com. We almost never use paper. I set up everything for the CT Speech & Debate Team on
Schoology and Google Docs this year as well. This is so students can sign up to participate in meets,
find information on the many events, see team photos from meets, cheer each other on, and get
updates.
How Do You Find Technology in the Classroom Helpful?
Students have access to all classroom info (including every link, lesson plan, etc.) all the time. They
get feedback quicker, and I can track student progress more effectively. Students and I have a
definite record of when assignments get submitted. On turnitin.com, I can get lots of feedback out
to multiple students quickly when we're in editing/revising phases of writing. And with the Speech
& Debate Team, I can grant students I don't always see on a regular basis in person access to the
information and support they need to work on their events and plan for competitions, fundraisers,
social activities.
What Is Your Favorite Piece of Classroom Technology? Why?
The more I use turnitin.com and Schoology, the more I like them.
What Is On Your Technology Wish List For Your Classroom? Why?
I do need another Surface tablet or two for Speech and Debate because it works so well for my
extemporaneous speakers who need the capability to do online research but also, the capability to
use a flash drive to download that research and access it while offline during competitions.
What Do You Love Most About Teaching?
I like having meaningful conversations with students about their thinking.

Cherry Creek Schools Parent Community:
Cherry Creek Schools requires families to update their household and student information each year
including emergency contacts, medical, child demographics, and policy acceptance forms, along with
school specific forms. In 2012, Cherry Creek School District made these forms available for parents to
fill out online. This is part of the annual check-in processes for the start of the next school year.
Parents who submitted information last year can save time by accessing the system to review,
update, and save information previously stored. Parents can always return to the web-based forms
to update information that may change during the year (i.e. cell phone numbers, medical updates,
etc.).
In July, you will receive an email informing you that the Parent Online Forms system is ready for
2015-2016 annual check-in. Some important notes about accessing the system:
1) You can register and/or login to the system at http://my.cherrycreekschools.org .
2) Parents who already registered to use the system from prior years must use the same
username and password. Your username will be provided in the July email. Parents can
change/reset their password at http://my.cherrycreekschools.org .
3) New parents to CCSD will need to create a username and password to use the system by
registering at the Internet address above. To register, parents should have the following
information available: Parent First and Last Name, Birthdate and Student ID for at least one
of their children, and a Personal Email Address. Spelling for all personal information must
match District Admissions. Student ID Numbers are available on school report cards, as well
as original Admissions documents.
4) Students and families not yet admitted to Cherry Creek Schools will not have access to the
system.
Cherry Creek Schools requires each family to update their student information. Be aware that
updating student forms electronically is only part of the check-in process. Each school has
additional steps for each student to complete. Check with your school for more information.
