S. Eliot to hosting a radio show, alumnus Stephen Pitters ’71 knows how to capture the attention of his audience. local communities through building and teaching. Pitters found that many people were committed to making his Centenary experience as positive as possible even if he never knew their names. Pitters holds master’s degrees in clinical social work and public health as well as a teaching certificate from Gonzaga University. Now retired from clinical work, he taught stress and anger management groups, couple communication, and parenting. “Before I could go, this other fellow comes by and tells me to stay put with my friends, and he would look after it. So, he intervened, and I don’t know what happened to this day. I saw the same guy the next day on campus. He never talked to me. I never talked to him. We were never friends, but he took care of a possibly negative situation and made it positive.” It was while attending Centenary that Pitters first started writing poetry, and he has since published two collections of his work, Bridges of Visions and Walks Through the Mind. Walks Through the Mind begins with a retrospective of academic and social survival in the South of the late 60s. The tales are taken directly from Stephen’s own experience at Centenary as one of the first African-American students on campus. A Panama City native who grew up in New York City, Pitters purposely chose to attend college in the South. Growing up in the northern United States, he read reports of the Freedom Riders and riots that were not uncommon in the South in the 60s. “I didn’t come to break down barriers. I came to Centenary to go to school and find out for myself what it was like to be in the South.” On his very first day at Centenary, after playing flag football with some other students who hailed from the east coast, Pitters’ southern experience began. “We decided to go to the greasy spoon across the street. I thought, ‘Now I’m ready for reality to set in: Are they going to serve me in this place?’ What happened caught me completely off guard. They served me, but they would not serve the guys I was with, who were all white. The guy at the counter told me, ‘The law says I have to serve you. I don’t have to serve them.’” At the same time, many experiences afforded by his Centenary education left a positive impression on Pitters. He was able to travel to Mexico and Alaska with professors during his college years, helping Hanging out with his friends one night after a football game, a guy asked Pitters to step outside. Encounters such as these are the inspiration for his upcoming book of poetry, Currencies of Life, due out next year. Chance meetings with women of different ages in the course of one day created a thread for the poet, causing him to examine his own behavior at various stages in his life. “Using these women, I was able to blend them and put it together like a collage of adventures so each one flows into the next. How did you evolve? What are your attitudes? How did they change? Have you grown? What have you become?” Asked what his creative process is, Pitters quotes T. S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” “And for a hundred visions and revisions, Before the taking of toast and tea.” He spends two to three hours a day reading poetry, writing, and revising drafts. Besides writing, he also hosts The Spokane Open Poetry Program on KYRS Thin Air Community Radio 92.3 FM. Stephen welcomes musicians and prose readers, playing their original tapes during his 30-minute show. All ages of poets are invited, from 6-60 and 8-80. He has been associated with KYRS since its inception. Pitters was surprised to discover that the radio show has been a great way to connect with Centenary alumni and has received emails from a few classmates. Looking back on his college days during the late 60s and early 70s, Pitters focuses on the positive. “I think what Centenary taught me is that you cannot go into a situation with bias. There are good people everywhere. I found good people here.” “I think what Centenary taught me is that you cannot go into a situation with bias. There are good people everywhere. I found good people here.” 3 4 classnotes May 1, 2010 – April 10, 2012 1947 Joseph Reeks, Shreveport, LA, is now retired. Recent efforts include encouraging students to “Handle Their Business,” a Registrar’s Office Facebook page for reminders and tips, and the recent approval to implement electronic transcripts. The protection of and access to academic records is one service offered to students and alumni. Electronic ordering and delivery of official transcripts is becoming the norm – and the expectation – of many students as well as the institutions that require such records. In an effort to provide the Centenary family with efficiency, ease of ordering, and delivery tracking capabilities, electronic transcript request and delivery will be implemented this summer. Students and alumni will be able to order official transcripts online and have the transcript delivered electronically to anyone with an email address. Of course, paper transcripts may be requested online and delivered via the US Postal Service. This new service will alleviate the need to find a fax machine for requests, the wait for mail delivery, and the uncertainty of receipt. A fee of $5 for ordered transcripts will cover the implementation and cost of the new service. More details about the service will be shared as they become available. The challenges associated with being a college student should be intellectual rather than procedural. Offering an electronic transcript option addresses the Office of Re-Enrollment’s goal to provide a clear roadmap to guide students and alumni through administrative necessities. The expected outcomes are improved success in completing degree requirements by students and efficient, timely fulfillment of requests for records from alumni. has moved to the SUB today from 1 to 4! Nakwaasah joined the ranks of Robert Parish, Willie Jackson, and Larry Robinson in the prestigious 1000-point Club. Maxx’s hot shooting this season and throughout his Centenary career helped him become only the 30th player all-time to reach this important milestone. After joining the 1,000-point Club on January 14, Maxx ended his season with 1,263 points total. “Maxx has put a tremendous amount of time and effort into this program. From being a DI walk-on to finishing as captain of a DIII program, I have watched Maxx grow and mature,” said Head Coach Adam Walsh. QUICK FACTS 28 Centenary athletes were named to the American Southwest Conference (ASC) Fall All-Academic Team. Centenary will have the state’s only NCAA Lacrosse program beginning in Fall 2012. Men’s Soccer unofficially led the American Southwest Conference with 34 points. Women’s Soccer earned a 10-8-1 winning season. Women’s Volleyball achieved a 7-game winning streak during the 2011-12 season and defeated the #1 team in ASC East, UMHB, on Senior Day. Centenary swim teams have been ranked nationally as high as 5th (men’s) and 20th (women’s). Ladies and Gents Cross Country teams won the 2011 Gator Run 5K meet. As a 6’3” forward, Nakwaasah has proven his skills from inside the lane, outside the arch, and at the free throw line. He recorded a career-high 51-point game on January 16, a school single-game record that beat Robert Parish’s record of 50 points. He has tallied ten 20+ games this season and 38 doublefigure games overall. Nakwaasah also became a member of the 500Rebound Club, ending his career with a total of 561. He is only the twenty-fifth player in the history of Centenary athletics to accomplish this feat. With Nakwaasah’s leadership, the Gents won seven straight games this season. Centenary has not held that long of a winning streak since the 1990-91 season with six wins. The Gents completed their 2011-12 season 11-11 in conference play. Gifts to the Centenary Fund for Student Scholarships make the Centenary experience a reality for students despite financial circumstances. •Every gift counts. Alumni giving rates are important to grant makers; higher participation rates enhance the College’s grant eligibility. •Your gift will be matched. Gifts to the Centenary Fund for Student Scholarships received by June 30, 2012 will be doubled by the CENTENARY MILLION DOLLAR SCHOLARSHIP CHALLENGE. Centenary Class Agents have worked hard to raise participation totals, and the class with the highest participation rate will be honored during Homecoming 2012. Not every class has an Agent.
