Theatrical Suppliers since 1840
Since 1840 Brodie & Middleton have been supplying traditional scenic materials to London's theatres from our
shop in Covent Garden. Today we remain in the heart of Theatreland and maintain close relationships with the
theatrical trade.
Our popularity with scenic artists, interior decorators and painters comes from the unique range of traditional
and modern materials available at our Drury Lane store and the specialist advice we can offer. In addition to
theatres, we supply the general public, schools, colleges, universities, museums and theatrical societies in the
UK and around the world. Brodies have specialised in supplying the trade with its needs since the early part of
the 19th Century. For many years Brodie & Middleton was based on Long Acre and today our shop is a few
minutes down the road on Drury Lane. Although times have changed we still hold a range of materials that a
nineteenth century scenery painter would recognise.
Brodie & Middleton supply a wide range of products suitable for use in theatres and associated applications.
We source products from around the world and select items specifically with the theatrical user in mind. In
addition, Brodie & Middleton own-brand products have been developed specifically for theatrical use and many
are manufactured at our north London factory. In addition to these we stock high quality ranges of artist's
acrylic and oil paints as well as all sorts of painting paraphernalia from paint stirrers to conservation grade
varnishes.

Off Broadway Colours
Rosco Supersaturated
Water-based brilliant colours in a complete
range of theatrical colours. These paints are
designed to maintain binder strength when
diluted with substantial quantities of water.
Rosco Supersaturated Paint is suitable for most
scenic surfaces, including muslin, floorcloth,
plastic and metal. Dries to a completely matte
finish. We have successfully used this product
to a dilution of 15:1 as a paint and at 25:1 as a
bright translucent wash.
Rosco Off Broadway
Versatile vinyl acrylic paint in a complete range
of theatrical colours. This range is extremely
popular with scenic professionals in the United
States and represents excellent value for money.
It is suitable for use on a broad range of
surfaces and can be used neat from the tin or
‘stretched’ by diluting with water.
Rosco Vivid FX
A wide (13 colour) palette of fluorescent paints
which perform excellently under daylight and
blacklight. These paints are fully intermixable
and dry to a completely matte finish. The paint
provides remarkably even one-coat coverage.
For best results, apply over a white base coat.
Rosco Clear Colour
Special UV reactive colours that are both fully
transparent and non fluorescent in daylight.
Unlike ordinary ‘invisible’ fluorescent colours,
these paints are not milky, allowing them to be
painted over other artwork.
Chroma Key
Rosco Chroma Key Paints have been
formulated to provide the high luminance
values and colour saturation for keying effects.
Colourcoat
Durable water borne acrylic enamel that has
excellent interior and exterior durability. Ideal
for use on a variety of surfaces including metal,
wood, concrete and brick. Maintains high levels
of gloss retention and abrasion resistance in
interior and exterior applications. Rosco
Colourcoat should not be used on unprimed
surfaces. The product can also be used to seal
and protect scenic paint finishes.

Tough Prime is a water-based primer which is
able to bond to hard-to-prime surfaces such as
plastics, metals, foams and light fabrics. Tough
Prime can be used to prime muslin, dance floors,
vinyl projection screens and even carpet. We have
successfully tinted Tough Prime with water-based
paints to create even and scuff-resistant floor
designs. Use neat for most applications.

Rosco Foamcoat is a water-based flame retardant
coating suitable for a variety of surfaces including
foam forms. It can be carved into or sanded
smooth to achieve such effects as tree bark,
masonry, and rugged terrain. Foamcoat dries to a
hard, durable coating that can withstand very
abusive handling. It also performs well when used
to enhance or texturise floors.

Eleven glitter laminate plastic film colours for

Shrink Mirror
Rosco's Silver Shrink Mirror is a lightweight
substitute for heavy glass mirror. This metalised

The Supergel range is composed of selected colours made in a different
way from other gels. Supergel film is a tri-extruded polycarbonate filter,
i.e. a pigmented layer sandwiched between two layers of clear . This
makes it very resistant to minor scratches and wear. It lasts longer in
lanterns and scrollers and resists fading very well.
Supergel is available in sheets 50cm x 61cm and rolls of 61cm x 7.62m
to order. Though we can only stock a limited range in our store, the full
selection of more than 125 colours is available to order.

This is a hard-wearing acrylic used to increase
the durability of the paint film. Adding 780
Coating to Bristol scenic paint will extend the
life of exterior paint-work and give increased
scuff resistance. Adhesion to difficult surfaces
such as plastic and metal is also improved. 780
Coating is also used to prevent colour
separation when mixing Bristol Metallic
colours with other colours from the range to
produce metallic tints.

Superfine glitter in a PVA binder. Bristol
Glitter Paints are a sparkling range of water
based emulsion paints. The very fine glitter
particles allow for very even finishes with
minimal drag. The paints are easy to apply
using brush roller or spray apparatus. A variety
of effects can be achieved by using these paints
in conjunction with coloured undercoats. The
range is fully intermixable.

Shoe and Accessories Colour
Suitable for use on leather, imitation leather and
canvas. Dylon Shoe and Accessories Colour is a
‘brush on’ solution to maintaining, tempering
and changing the colour of shoes, belts and
handbags. The colours can be mixed to create
further shades. Satin Shoe Dye is not suitable
for use with synthetic or synthetic mix fabrics.
Machine Dye
Dylon machine dye is a user-friendly product
which allows fabric to be coloured using a
domestic grade washing machine. This product
has recently been awarded Good Housekeeping
Institute accreditation and is available in a
comprehensive range of colours. Additional salt
is required.
Wash & Dye Kits
These are the same product as the machine
dyes, but include salt for convenience.
Stage Dyes
Stage dyes produce brilliant colours and are
suitable for a wide range of dying applications
in the theatre.
Use
Stage Dye is mixed with methylated spirits to
create a liquid dye. This is used for dying
gauzes, drapes and curtains. As well as being a
useful product for taking down props and
costumes, and they are also suitable for
colouring wood and paper. The spirit soluble
stage dyes will colour shellac-based and
polyurethane varnishes. Stage dye is not
colourfast and is not recommended for fabrics
that are handled extensively. They are not
suitable for dying wax.
Spirit Soluble
Mix 25 g of dye to a smooth paste with
methylated spirit and thin out to 2 litres. 6 g of
acetic acid to 25 g of dye will fix colour on
wool.
Double the quantity for black water based and
spirit based dyes 50 g:2 Litre.
Water Soluble
Pour 2 litres of boiling water onto 25 g of dye
and stir.

A substance which allows you to transfer black
& white, and colour, print-outs and photocopies
on to any fabric article. The image subsequently
is able to withstand laundering and pressing but
not dry-cleaning. Although image maker is
designed to transfer on to fabric, we have successfully used it on bare wood, heavy-duty plastics, cling-film, primed surfaces and glass.

These dyes, formerly known as Magix, are used
widely in the theatre as a general purpose spray
dye. Originally designed as a shoe dye, these
sprays have proved ideal for colouring all kinds
of leather, vinyl and textiles.

Recolour Shoe Dye is an aerosol dye. Unlike
normal spray paint, Recolour Shoe Dye colours
fabric and leather without creating an
appreciable paint film. The dye sinks into the
material leaving it flexible and smooth. The
sprays are best suited to taking down and aging
objects.
For changing the colour of leather goods
completely, first strip away any coating with
acetone. Then dye the leather with a liquid dye.
The leather should then be sprayed with
Recolour Shoe Dye to give a final even coat of
colour.
Recolour Shoe Dye are designed for colouring
shoes. As a result there is a large range of
browns and a restricted palette of other colours.

Many colours such as Ultramarine Blue and
Yellow Ochre have become extremely popular
amongst interior designers, who need a strength
of colour unobtainable from proprietary paint
manufacturers.
Product
The range has been selected for its balance
between colour intensity and ease of use. As
most scenic paint is mixed by hand, it is
extremely important that the dry pigment
should wet easily. All our colours mix readily
with glaze or size, and 'fluffy', difficult to wet
pigments have been avoided. Colourfastness is
good for scenic and decorative applications and
many of the colours are very permanent.
Brodies superfine pigments allow the scenic
and decorative artist to achieve sophisticated
results without the high costs of using some
exotic or dangerous pigments.
We maintain our sources of pigment over time
to ensure a general colour match is possible,
though some batch variations can occur. Each
colour has been priced individually in order to
keep the customers' costs as low as possible.
Six of these colours can be mixed with Textit
Cement or limewash. These colours are marked
with an asterisk *.
Colours marked † contain lead.
Use
To turn pigment into paint it needs to be mixed
with a binder. For scenic use a water-based,
quick drying binder is the most suitable
medium. Traditionally this binder has been a
glue size, such as rabbit skin glue. This gives a
dense mat distemper paint that remains water
soluble and can be scrubbed down after use. Its
disadvantage is that it must be applied warm, as
the size turns to a jelly when cool.
Alternatively Emulsion Glaze provides a more
convenient medium for making paint. This is
mixed in the same proportions as glue size and
can be used at room temperature.

When handling dry pigments we always recommend using a dust mask and gloves. Though
the Superfine Dry Pigment range is generally
non-toxic we do include a range of lead based
Chrome pigments in the yellow/orange range.
These Chrome pigments must not be used for
decorative applications. Always use a mask and
gloves when handling these colours and avoid
eating or smoking. Once the pigment is contained in paint form it is difficult to ingest and
represents a low health risk within the norms of
standard use.

Method
First make a stiff paste with cold water and the
dry pigment. If the pigment proves difficult to
wet add a small quantity of detergent or alcohol
to the mixture. This will help break down the
surface tension. Then thin out to a working
consistency (similar to a thin cream) with the
warm liquid size or glaze medium.
For high quality applications use Brodie &
Middleton Water-Based Lacquer. This is an
acrylic emulsion with flame retardant properties that provides a flexible non-yellowing
paint film. Other possible mediums include
shellac varnish, linseed oil, cellulose varnish,
acrylic co-polymer emulsion, casein, Polyvine
acrylic varnishes, and even wall-paper paste

for special effects under UV light. Best results

surface. This allows the light to reflect back

Mix UV powder to a paste with glaze mix. Thin
out with the above proportion of glaze mix.
Luminous paint is available in 250 and 500 ml
bottles made up in a PVA base. This paint is phosphorescent, meaning that it absorbs light energy
which it will then emit when the light source is
removed. It gives out a greenish glow in the dark.
The strength of the glow will depend on the
strength and duration of the light exposure. Like
fluorescent paint this paint is not permanent.

Wildfire UV Reactive Paints
In our opinion these paints are the most intense
UV colours on the market and up to now they
have been difficult to buy over the counter in the
UK.
In addition to the usual range of fluorescent
colours, the Wildfire range also includes a set of
'invisible' colours, including blue, red, green,
orange and yellow. These paints appear milky
white under normal light, but fluoresce intensely
when under UV light, allowing the artist huge
scope for dramatic transformation effects.
Invisible Clear Colours are totally clear when
dry and will fluoresce under UV light. This
makes them ideal for painting on darker surfaces
where standard invisible colours would show.
All visible paint colours appear bright under
ordinary light and fluoresce brilliantly under UV
light, while the white invisible paint colours
change to bright glowing colours when UV light
is applied. Colours can be intermixed as desired
to create tertiary colours. Wildfire Glow Green is
a photo luminescent paint that glows in the dark.
The longer and more intense the exposure to UV
light, the longer and brighter the Glow Green
will glow.
All Wildfire UV Reactive Paints are acrylic
based and dry quickly to a smooth matt finish
that is water resistant and flexible.
In some applications (e.g. high traffic exposures)
Wildfire UV Reactive Paint may require a
protective clear topcoat. Use Wildfire Matte or
Gloss Inhibitor sealer over Wildfire Luminescent
Paints. This specially formulated sealer protects
and inhibits UV-B and UV-C while still
allowing Wildfire UV-A to pass through in
addition to improving washability and wear
resistance.
Grimas Makeup
Grimas water make-up is widely acknowledged
amongst face painters as the best water makeup on the market. The most significant factor is
the great depth and clarity of the colours.
Colours come in pans and are easy to mix and
apply. The make-up, once dry is very resistant
to rub-off. It can be removed readily with water
or cleansing lotion. This makes it ideal for use
with children.
Grimas Water Based Makeup
Works just like watercolour paint. Dries and is
resistant to rub off. Colours can be mixed. Can
be removed easily and no trace of colour will
remain. Use cleansing lotion if necessary. Use
cake makeup as a base.
Grimas’ Cake Makeup (Pancake)
Easy to apply base. Cleanse skin using
cleansing lotion.
Moisten makeup sponge and squeeze. Check
the correct amount of cake makeup on hand.
Apply makeup with sponge.
Mastix/Spirit Gum
Spirit gum is a liquid adhesive which is suitable
for use on the body. It is available in a variety
of grades to suit a variety of applications. Spirit
gum can be used to secure, amongst other
things, leotards, wigs, fake facial hair, bald
caps, latex accessories and prosthetics , crepe
wool, soft putty, polyglitter and polystars. Spirit
gum should be removed by dabbing with the
appropriate solution and not by rubbing.
Water Soluble Mastix/Spirit Gum
A water soluble liquid adhesive. This product is
easily removed with warm water and is suitable
for use on children as it does not contain
irritants. Water soluble spirit gum loosens when
exposed to perspiration. For this reason we do
not recommend it for use with soft putty, latex
or bald caps, or for use on particularly mobile
parts of the face and hands. Supplied in a bottle
with brush.
Spirit Gum Extra
A matte, highly adhesive skin glue. Spirit gum
extra can be removed using spirit gum extra
remover. This product is effective when
exposed to heavy perspiration. It should not be
used on the eyes and must not be used as an
eyelash adhesive. Supplied in a bottle with a
brush.

Grimas soft putty is a kneadable material which
can be modelled and remodelled. To attach soft
putty securely, we advise using a spirit gum and
mesh technique. For best results, apply the
putty in layers. Water-based make-up cannot be
used over soft putty. Can be removed with
standard make-up remover.
Derma wax
Grimas derma wax is easy to knead and adheres
well to the skin. It can be used to cover scars
and make-up can be applied easily over it. We
recommend this product above soft putty for
close-up work in photography, film and video
projects. Can be removed with standard makeup remover.

PVC Glitter - Small & Large
Brodie & Middleton glitter is a safe form of
hexagonal pvc plastic glitter designed for
theatrical use. The 0.40” / 1000 micron size of the
flakes allows for effective use on-stage. The
'Large' Glitter (1/8” / 3125 micron) gold and silver
is brighter, but less ‘glittery’.
Glitter can be used loose or made into a glitter
paint with glaze or Glitter Medium. Glitter will
adhere well to spray-mount, PVA, Copydex,
varnish and glaze. Due to its coarseness, applying
glitter as a paint, requires several coats to obtain
an even coverage. Best results are obtained by
applying over a coloured base.

Glitter made from this material is brighter, lasts
longer and is less prone to leaching in solvents.
Our gold and silver polyester glitter is a 200
micron / 0.008” grade and is fine enough to be
sprayed or silk screened.

Brodie & Middleton Flitter is made from large
(50mm x 22mm) pieces of light metallised foil
glitter, which flutter when dropped. It is used for
glitter drops and bombs and is designed to be
flame retardant and colourfast.

Flame Retardancy
It is not possible to produce a non ignitable finish on all materials. The level varies, but the most effective
treatments are on absorbent materials like cotton and other natural fibres; wood, straw, cardboard and paper
products etc. Synthetic materials are more difficult to treat with most plastics being extremely difficult to upgrade this way. Finishes like scotchguard stain proofing present difficulties of penetration. Increased penetration is normally possible by adding wetting agent or raising the temperature of the solution. The purpose is to
obtain the best flame retardancy possible with the particular material applying the most suitable flame retardant. This is to make the material more difficult to ignite, to slow any flame spread down to a minimum and
prevent smouldering. In this way, in case of fire, it helps along with other measures to provide a time delay for
people to evacuate the area safely.
Health and Safety
Flamebar solutions are not harmful when used as directed. Observe normal safety precautions limiting exposure to a minimum by providing ventilation and using gloves, goggles, and mask for extended spraying. Refer
to Health and Safety Sheet Before use.

Professional distressing crayons like Schmutz
Sticks. Made from water soluble wax these
crayons come in eight useful shades. They are
packaged in reseal-able applicators and can be
smeared, smudged or dragged onto fabric for
realistic dirt effects. Non toxic.

Lustre Pigments
Pearl and Metallic Lustre Pigments are made
from mica flakes, coated with titanium and
iron oxides. Unlike Bronze Powders, which
are made from metal powder, they can be
mixed with any medium, including waterbased, are non toxic and totally lightfast.
They are impervious to acids, alkalis, water
and temperatures up to 800°. No top-coat is
need, as they do not tarnish.
It is possible to achieve a wide of effects by
coating over other colours, and Pearl Lustres
are most effective used over a dark base coat.
Bronze Powder
Bronze powder is finely powdered zinc and
copper that is processed to provide brilliant
gold effects without the high cost of gold
leaf. When mixed it produces a dense, highly
pigmented paint, highly effective in decorative paintwork. Ormoline paint is bronze
powder mixed with cellulose varnish base to
form a hard-wearing paint film.
Use
Bronze powders can be mixed with various
mediums to produce gold paint. The most
commonly used medium is shellac varnish.
Once dry, the paint must always be sealed to
prevent tarnishing. Bronze powder is most
suited for interior applications and will eventually darken with age. For exterior gilding
effects we would recommend using gold leaf.
Silver Powders
This is available in granules and must be
mixed with a spirit based medium, such as
polyurethane varnish. If a water mixable
silver powder is required use Bright Silver
Powder.
Ormoline Medium
Cellulose based medium for bronze powders
used in conjunction with Ormoline sealer for
a hard wearing gold paint that can be used
externally. Thin the paint mixture and clean
up with Ormoline Thinner.

French Enamel Varnish & Metal Leaf
French Enamel Varnish
This shellac-based varnish is formulated with
selected dyes to produce a clear, even and
totally transparent colour which will adhere to
most surfaces.
Use
FEV has a range of uses including varnishing
and staining wood in one application, colouring
and 'taking down' props and scenery, as well as
simulating stained glass effects on glass and
Perspex. It can also be used for colouring low
wattage bulbs. Clear mixing solution can be
used to make up special colours and
formulations or to thin down colours. The
solvent for FEV is methylated spirits. FEV is
intended for decorative or scenic use and are
not permanent.
Metal Leaf
Metal leaf is sold in book form, with 25 140
mm x 140 mm sheets per book. Each book
contains 0.5 sq metre of metal leaf. The leaf is
sold ‘transfer’, with a paper backing for easier
handling. Lose leaf is available to order, if
required.
Metal leaf will oxidise is left untreated, so it
should be varnished with shellac or Ormoline
Sealer. Use French Enamel Varnish to colour
& seal the leaf.

contains a retarder. The varnish stays open

in hours. The leaf is applied to the tacky

Emulsion glaze is a water-based, non-toxic
medium that can be used to make paint from
powdered pigment, UV pigment and bronze
powders. Made from a polyvinyl acetate base,
this glaze produces a mat paint film when
mixed with pigment. A dilute solution of
emulsion glaze can be used as a size to seal
porous surfaces, and it has excellent adhesive
properties when used at full strength.
Rabbit Skin Glue
Rabbit skin glue is a good quality hide glue
used for sizing. This product forms a traditional
part of recipes for preparing canvases for oil
priming and making gesso. As a binder for
pigment it makes distemper, often used as
scenic paint.

Brown Paper Gum Tape
Mask It is a very low tack wide white masking
tape. Ideal for location work, standbys and
quick turnarounds. It is straightforward to paint
and is fully repositionable. Mask It is often used
on interior walls to enable décor to be
temporarily and convincingly altered. We have
also used this product for stencilling and
novelty effects. Wrinkles when wet, dries
smooth. Easy to use.
This traditional ‘gum strip’ tape is ideal for
stretching paper prior to painting and for
backing picture frames. It is fully repositionable
when wet and very able to withstand full
saturation.
