Title
“Medical Practice Leadership and an Integrated Body of Knowledge”
Introduction
An interesting thing happens when you accept the leadership of a complex
medical practice. You discover, very quickly, that you need to know stuff! This is
precisely why every medical practice leader needs two things:
1. A clear and rational thinking process, and
2. A professional and robust body of knowledge.
Objectives
This proposed, exploratory paper will focus on four issues directly related to
leadership thinking and knowing in contemporary medical practices:
What is the theory underlying contemporary leadership thinking?
How does leadership thinking apply to complex organizations?
How does leadership thinking apply to a medical practice?
What does a medical practice leader need to know?
Research Methodology
The research methodology of the proposed paper will be a comprehensive
literature review of leadership thinking in medical practices. Additionally, the
proposed paper will develop and present a heuristic model of medical practice
leadership thinking [based on a general systems paradigm] that provides
structure for the identification and evaluation of a specific body of knowledge.
Background
There is no uniform standard to apply to the method, process, skills, content,
or evaluation of leadership thinking in medical practices.
Contemporary literature does not identify a standard theory of understanding
a complex organization like a medical practice.
ACMPE has identified a Body of Knowledge [BOK] that addresses the issue
of professional knowledge for a medical practice leader.
The inductive approach of ACMPE can be complemented by a deductive
approach that is grounded in contemporary general systems thinking.
The combination of a systems mental model of complex medical practices
and an integrated body of knowledge seems appropriate for use in
contemporary medical practices.

Key Points
The identification of a leadership thinking heuristic is essential to rationalizing
the leadership process in contemporary medical practices.
A leadership thinking heuristic will be identified that covers aspects of the
theory, application, and practice of medical practice leadership.
Five steps of a leadership thinking process will be identified and discussed in
detail.
The theory of general systems will provide the conceptual model for a
discussion of how complex organizations actually work.
The leadership thinking heuristic will subsequently be applied to management
of medical group practices.
The application process will give rise to a discussion of ACMPE’s Body of
Knowledge [BOK] and its place in the leadership thinking process.
A Systems body of knowledge will be identified that complements the
contents of the ACMPE BOK.
An integration of the two BOKs will be made and the benefits of the newly
integrated BOK will be described.
A Strategic Planning Worksheet will be provided that operationalizes all
aspects of the leadership thinking heuristic and the integrated body of
knowledge.
Numerous graphic depictions of concepts presented in the paper will be
provided within the text of the paper.
Relevance to Medical Practice Management:
The systems approach [mental model] presented in this exploratory paper could
be used immediately by any medical practice leader to identify the components
of the organization and respond with appropriate strategic and tactical skills.
Additionally, the integrated BOK presented in the proposed paper provides a
comprehensive and detailed picture of what a medical practice leader actually
needs to know on the job.
Expected Findings
The intended outcomes of the proposed, exploratory paper are two:
1. The identification of a leadership thinking process applicable to
management within contemporary medical practices, and
2. The presentation of an integrated approach to a professional body of
knowledge for medical practice leadership.
