The job was at the Smokey Falls Power Generating Station in Kapuskasing, Ontario. The customer was Ontario Power Generation. It was going to be an interesting project. There weren’t many anchors, however; the 6 anchors that were required consisted of 37 strands each at over 100’ long per strand. On top of this, each individual anchor had to be remotely monitored by load cells to make sure that there was no shifting of the anchors in the future. This required some custom hardware such as externally threaded anchor heads, load cells, re-stressing tubes, and load cell platens. Due to the complexity of the added hardware, it was deemed necessary to create a 3D model of all the components. This way, all parties involved could visually see how things worked and fit together before hand so that there would be no issues on the job site. This was a huge benefit in time, cost, and design. The anchor heads were machined from a billet piece of 1045 grade steel primarily on a CNC mill. The machining process involves drilling all required holes for the strand to pass through, as well as holes for grouting operations and tapped holes for lifting and restrainer plate bolts. After the basic head was machined, it was externally threaded with a 14”-4 TPI ACME thread so that, should the need ever arise, it could be re-stressed using the CTS supplied Re-Stressing Tube Assembly. The stressing head required was machined from a billet piece of 4140. The original block of steel weighed over 350 pounds and it took over 40 hours to complete the machining. In addition to common parts such as the anchor and stressing head, this project also required CTS to supply some less common parts such as load cell platens and a relatively new design - organizing fingers. This product is useful for anchors with a lot of strand and a long tail length. It allows the contractor to install the organizer and use it to install the stressing head on the strands, and then be able to remove the organizer, so that it may be re-used again on the next anchor. CTS was honored to work on such a special project and would like to send a special thank you to both Daniel Lees and Gavin Edmunds of Geo Foundations for the opportunity. Con-Tech Systems Ltd. would like to sincerely thank GeoFoundations Contractors Inc. for awarding CTS this project. Machining ....
