This year we received more nominations than ever before, an attestation to the growth of women in business in Newfoundland and Labrador. It is truly an honour to be nominated for an award, as it is recognition that you and your business are making an impact on your community and your achievements are worth being celebrated. I’d like to thank the many sponsors and supporters of this year’s awards gala, as well as the members of the selection committees who volunteered their time to read and evaluate every application. I would also like to thank all those who attended the awards gala this year. We were so excited to see more people than ever before join in our celebration of women in business. By recognizing the successes of women business owners, NLOWE hopes to increase the number of role models and mentors for women in business across the province. It was also an opportunity for delegates to attend the Global Good Morn- ing and the Annual Awards Luncheon and Business Conference of the Women’s Business Development Council (WBDC) of Florida, a regional partner of the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC). Louise Leger, Consul General of Canada in Miami, who promotes investment and trade between Canada and Florida, was the keynote speaker for the Global Good Morning. This was followed by a panel about doing business internationally. “This is the third time that NLOWE has attended this event,” says Export Consultant, Deborah Youden, who represented NLOWE on this trade mission, “Each year we are creating more opportunities for international trade.” WBDC of Florida has been our partner in this project for the past 3 years. They provide WBENC certification to women-owned businesses, which certifies a business as being at least 51% owned, managed and controlled by a woman or women. Their territory includes Florida (minus the panhandle), Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. With the tremendous support that NLOWE received from our partners in Canada and in the Florida region, as well as the contributions of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and the Government of NL, the trade mission was very successful again this year.
