2013 Award Winners Announced
Women business owners walked the
red carpet at NLOWE’s 2013 annual
awards gala on Oct. 30 in St. John’s,
where six exceptional women business
owners were honoured as Entrepreneurs of the Year.
Anne Whelan, President and CEO of
Seafair Capital in St. John’s, took home
the Entrepreneurial Excellence Award,
the pinnacle award at the 2013 Entrepreneur of the Year Awards Gala. Whelan has a diversified portfolio, with holdings in health and community care,
industrial supply and real estate. She
operates several businesses, including CareGivers Inc., Blue sky, BrenKir
Industrial Supply and Seafair Capital.
Through these businesses, Whelan has
had a significant impact on various in-
dustries in the province both economically and socially. The Entrepreneurial
Excellence Award is sponsored by Royal Bank of Canada. The gala was held at
the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland in
St. John’s.
Prior to the gala, Whelan said of winning the award, “The women who have
received this award in the past are pillars of the business community in Newfoundland and Labrador; it is quite an
honour to be recognized alongside
these amazing women.”

business owners honoured with Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. Taking
home the College of the North Atlantic
Youth Entrepreneur of the Year Award
was Amanda Burton of Recipe for
Health, a Registered Dietitian and Nutrition Counsellor.
“It is amazing to be recognized as the
Youth Entrepreneur of the Year,” said
Burton of winning the award. “Don’t
believe that just because you are a
young person you can’t run your own
business or make a difference in the
community, because you can!”
Susan Power, owner of Higher Talent Inc. in St. John’s, won the Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union
Start-up Award, which recognizes a
successful entrepreneur who has been
in business for two to five years. Upon
being notified that she would be winning the award, Power said, “I feel so
grateful to be selected for this award
and it gives me energy to continue to
grow my business.”
The winner of the Scotiabank Innovation Award was Lisa Gillam, owner
of The Munchkin Music Factory, which
offers unique music classes for young
children, and Melecho Music Publishing. “I feel that we are on the path to
creating something new, different, and
unique,” said Gillam, “so it is incredibly
rewarding to be recognized as an innovator through this award.”
Bev Moore-Davis, owner of Morvis
Group of Companies, which includes
Frontline Action, August & Lotta Stockholm and CGI Entertainment Inc., received the Community Impact Award,
sponsored by the Hebron Project.
Moore-Davis also established a nonprofit organization, Miles for Smiles,
this year to generate public awareness
around the issues associated with child
abuse. Upon learning that she would
be receiving the Community Impact
Award, Moore-Davis said, “To receive
this award....I cannot put in words how
much this means to me. I have worked
hard at something that I am very passionate about and it is wonderful to see
the community recognizing its importance, and the need is there.”
The Visionary Award, sponsored by
Cox & Palmer, was awarded to Sharon
Horan, owner of FIT For Work. “I have
had the opportunity now that FIT For
Work is at this stage of growth, to devote my efforts to create more significant leaders within my organization,”
said Horan prior to the gala. “Winning
this award is important in that it profiles the success of not only myself but
of our firm and everyone who works
there and contributes to its success.”
“NLOWE is excited to roll out the red
carpet to honour the achievements
of the winners of this year’s Entrepreneur of the Year Awards,” says Paulette
Fudge, president of NLOWE’s Board of
Directors. “These women represent the
best and brightest women entrepreneurs in the province and we are happy
to help recognize their success.”
The awards gala was attended by
nearly 250 people including Premier
Kathy Dunderdale as well as other government representatives, members of
the business community and industry
professionals from across the province.
NLOWE has been handing out Entrepreneur of the Year Awards since 1998.
Over 200 nominations were received
this year and in the past, winners have
gone on to win national accolades.
Message from the President
On behalf of
NLOWE’s
staff
and Board of Directors, I would
like to congratulate the winners
of the 16th annual Entrepreneur of the Year
Paulette Fudge
Awards.
President
These awards
honour outstanding women who
demonstrate true entrepreneurial
spirit; women entrepreneurs who are
creating, innovating, achieving and
leading the way in their communities.
This year’s honourees are visionaries,
leaders and trailblazers and are a tes-

tament to the fact that women business owners are making their mark in
every industry in our province. NLOWE
is excited and honoured to be a small
part of their success and it is with great
pleasure that we recognize their efforts
and wish them continued success in
the future.
I’d also like to commend all those who
were nominated for an award. This
year we received more nominations
than ever before, an attestation to the
growth of women in business in Newfoundland and Labrador. It is truly an
honour to be nominated for an award,
as it is recognition that you and your
business are making an impact on your
community and your achievements are
worth being celebrated.
I’d like to thank the many sponsors
and supporters of this year’s awards
gala, as well as the members of the selection committees who volunteered
their time to read and evaluate every
application. I would also like to thank
all those who attended the awards gala
this year. We were so excited to see
more people than ever before join in
our celebration of women in business.
By recognizing the successes of women business owners, NLOWE hopes to
increase the number of role models
and mentors for women in business
across the province. So once again,
congratulations Susan, Lisa, Bev, Sharon, Amanda, and Anne. You are part of
an exceptional group of accomplished
entrepreneurs and deserve to be honoured and recognized for your success.
You are an inspiration.

Trade Mission
Making Connections in Miami
NLOWE led a delegation of six women business owners to Miami, Florida for events
with WBDC and matchmaking opportunities. Pictured left to right are: Margaret Budgell,
River Mountain Realty; Rita Maher (Office Manager), Abbyshot Clothiers Ltd. ; Bonnie
Cook, Abbyshot Clothiers Ltd.; Theresa James, RV Designs; Lisa Gillam, The Munchkin
Music Factory; and Andrea Sharpe, Karlande Designs. Anne Whelan, Seafair Capital
Inc., not pictured.
“I came home with a solid sales lead
that fits my business perfectly,” notes
Theresa James of RV Designs. Theresa
was one of six women-owned businesses from Newfoundland and Labrador who joined NLOWE on a trade mission to Miami from October 16-18.
The Trade Mission involved oneon-one business matchmaker meetings, to access supplier diversity opportunities and to connect with other
women-owned business enterprises
and corporations. The meetings were
arranged prior to travel to ensure that
each delegate had the opportunity

to make the right connections during
the trip. These matchmaking efforts
proved fruitful for several participating
businesses. “Each meeting was positive with potential for future business
opportunities,” says Bonnie Cook of Abbyshot Clothiers Ltd..
Other participating companies included Karlande Designs Ltd. (Andrea
Sharpe), The Munchkin Music Factory
(Lisa Gillam), River Mountain Realty
(Margaret Budgell), and Seafair Capital
Inc. (Anne Whelan).
It was also an opportunity for delegates to attend the Global Good Morn-
ing and the Annual Awards Luncheon
and Business Conference of the Women’s Business Development Council
(WBDC) of Florida, a regional partner
of the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC). Louise Leger,
Consul General of Canada in Miami,
who promotes investment and trade
between Canada and Florida, was the
keynote speaker for the Global Good
Morning. This was followed by a panel
about doing business internationally.
“This is the third time that NLOWE
has attended this event,” says Export
Consultant, Deborah Youden, who represented NLOWE on this trade mission,
“Each year we are creating more opportunities for international trade.”
WBDC of Florida has been our partner
in this project for the past 3 years. They
provide WBENC certification to women-owned businesses, which certifies a
business as being at least 51% owned,
managed and controlled by a woman
or women. Their territory includes Florida (minus the panhandle), Puerto Rico
and the US Virgin Islands.
With the tremendous support that
NLOWE received from our partners in
Canada and in the Florida region, as
well as the contributions of the Atlantic
Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)
and the Government of NL, the trade
mission was very successful again this
year.
