10 Days that Unexpectedly Changed America – Massacre at Mystic
After taking notes on the Massacre at Mystic video, answer the following questions, citing
evidence or examples where possible.
1) The English and the Southeastern New England Native Americans viewed currency
differently. The Natives, like the Pequot, used something called wampum. What is
wampum and how did the native and English concept of currency differ?
2) Compare and contrast the Puritan and Native American societies. How did they differ,
how, if any, were they the same?
3) Describe the impact that disease had on the native people. Make sure to write about how
disease led to war within the natives themselves.
4) Explain how did the English view land compared to the Native American’s? Please give
an example.
5) Explain the concept of “Just War”.
6) Explain the impact that the Massacre at Mystic had on the relationship between European
settlers and Native Americans, both immediately following the massacre and over the
next two hundred and fifty years.
7) Explain the history of land grants between colonial governments and Native Americans.

Over the weekend, research the Pequot Indians. Please find out the following:
A. Did they survive or did they become extinct?
B. If they did survive, what has become of the tribe today?
