The purpose of this activity is to learn about the life of women and the culture and political climate of Afghanistan under the Taliban Use the Research Log to help you keep track of your sources Before you begin Searching the Databases for Information on Afghanistan There are a few questions that you should ask about the project at this stage of research: What topic am I researching? Where can I locate the information? Where do I start? What Search Terms Do I use? Think about your topic for a moment. When doing research, especially with online databases, you have to enter the correct search term to locate information on your topic. If I want to learn about the country and its history, I would use Geography and Culture Databases Culture Grams Click on World Edition Select Country from the drop down window – Afghanistan Students can use this for history, people, religion and pictures World Geography Select country – Afghanistan Information on history, organizations, biographies, government Looing for information on Islam? Use the database Oxford Islamic Studies Online WebCollection Plus – use this to locate hard copies of books; enough time has passed since the Taliban ruled Afghanistan that you can find numerous books on the topic and related topics such as women and islam It is important to note that you will not have to read the entire book. You can Use the index and table of contents to locate the information you need. Pick up one of the books and read a few of the subjects in the index At this stage of your research, you should Ask the following questions How many still need more information? How many have enough information? Is there anyone who is completely lost? There was a lot written about the Taliban and Afghanistan published in magazines and newspapers, so a good source to use to locate this information is Masterfile Premier MasterFile Premier Click on IE, Databases by topic, M for magazines, Masterfile Premier Put a check mark in the box next to full text Enter the search term in the search Click on Search If you still don’t have enough information Thomson/Gale’s Virtual Reference Library or Power Search This contains ebook, which are up-to-date single copy and reference books that they can read online. You can search across all the books or a single copy. Also explain that other ebooks are available in WebCollection Plus. IE, Database, Topic R for Reference, Gale’s Virtual Reference Library, Proceed Two ways to locate books – browse or key word search The easiest search is to cross search all of the ebooks at once by entering search terms in basic search box When you are finished, if you still need more information, click on other Gale databases at the top of the window and search the U.S. History can click on U.S. history and change it to world history Finally, you will need to put picture and video clips in your wiki and there are several databases that you can use: AP Images archives as a source for pictures and United streaming for video clips Have search completed YouTube is blocked.
