Baltica cigarettes – which, just like the beer, come in flavors such as Baltika No.3 and Baltika No.9 – were being distributed in downtown St. Petersburg as part of a marketing push to introduce the new brand. The brewery, not surprisingly, is displeased and intends to protect its trademark by going to court. But the makers of the cigarettes, a factory based in the Moscow-region town of Podolsk, think that the people from St. Petersburg do not have exclusive rights for the word "Baltika". However, the lawyers, who specialize in protecting trademarks, say that cigarette factory has little chance of surviving a court case — particularly because not just the name but the entire Baltika beer logo is used on the cigarettes. 1. Baltica is famous for its numbered flavors of beer. 2. Cigarettes Baltika were distributed in the center of St. Petersburg as a part of the promotion campaign. 3. The brewery Baltica started to produce cigarettes with the same trademark. 4. The cigarette factory from St. Petersburg is illegaily using Baltika trademark. 5. The cigarette makers just used the word "Baltika", not the brewery's logo. 8. The cigarette factory is going to defend its right to use the word "Baltica" as the trademark for their product. 9. The lawyers think that the cigarette factory will certainly win the case. 10. The brewery's officials think that the use of their logo by the cigarette company will contribute to the popularity of beer Baltika. 49 TEXT 2 Nobel Laureates Collect their Prizes The first Nobel prizes of the new millenium were awarded at ceremonies in Stockholm on Sunday. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden awarded the prizes for sciences, economics and literature to 12 laureates. The prizes, founded in the will of Swedesh industrialist Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, are each worth nine million Swedish crowns this year ($929,300). The laureates received their prizes at a traditional ceremony in Stockholm's Concert Hall, attended by 1,800 people. They later took part in the Nobel banquet, a glittering climax to the year's Nobel festivities, attended by 1,373 guests in Stockholm's City Hall. The scientists who laid the foundations of the computer revolution and pioneered plastics that can conduct electricity won the physics and chemistry prizes. Their work paved the way for computers, compact discs and mobile phones without which modern life is unimaginable. And true to form, a mobile phone rang out loudly during the speech praising the three physics laureates, Jack Kilby and Herbert Kroemer of the United States and St. Petersburg's Zhores Alfyorov. Alfyorov noted in his acceptance speech that physics had brought both benefits and disasters to mankind in the 20th century and warned that mass media could be abused in the wrong hands. 1. In 1914 a German factory at Russelheim produced the 260hp Opel race car, which could attain astounding speed of up to 228 km/h. The First World War interrupted Opel's road to success, but the military defeat of the Kaiser's Germany by the countries of the Entente almost destroyed the business altogether. However, in the 1920s Opel began to create cars capable of stunning speed: an impressive new speed record was set at 254 km/h. At the end of the '20s the German company was swallowed up by General Motors. This explosive cocktail saw 100 000 Opels making their way onto the market every day. The Second World War and co-operation with the Third Reich put a huge dent in the company's reputation. However, towards the 1960s Opel once again began to dominate the market, bringing out the Opel GT, which continually set new standards for speed. The Opel Astra is the descendant of it.
