Opel Marks the Arrival of its Best Diesel Engine Portfolio Ever

New generation whisper diesels introduced in Insignia, Mokka and Corsa

Insignia features exemplary exhaust gas treatment with low nitrogen oxide emission
Opel has today taken a significant step in the transformation of its portfolio of engines with
the launch of a new two litre turbo diesel engine to the Insignia and new 1.6 whisper diesel
to the Mokka. Available in Ireland from April this year, the new Insignia and Mokka engines
boast class-leading efficiencies in their displacement class, improved responsiveness and
dramatically reduce the noise and vibrations providing supreme levels of comfort.
Speaking about the launch of these new engines, Dave Sheeran, Managing Director, Opel
Ireland said: “While diesel technologies are high on the agenda for motoring consumers,
Opel has taken a significant step in providing sustainable solutions with the renewal of its
portfolio of diesel engines. The new Insignia and Mokka engines provide a powerful mix of
German efficient engineering, power and comfort which we know will prove to be popular
with Irish customers”.
2.0 CDTI: Top-of-the-range diesel
The leader in the pack is Opel’s new 2.0 CDTI that delivers almost five percent more
horsepower of 170hp and offers 14 percent more torque of 400Nm at 3,750 rpm. This fourcylinder powerhouse propels the Insignia from zero to 100 km/h in nine seconds and has a
maximum speed of 225 km/h. Fuel consumption has been reduced to 114gm/km which
translates to €200 in annual road tax (A4).
Just as important, the engine is also impressively quiet and smooth as a result of Opel’s
unwavering focus on ‘sound engineering’ measures to minimise vehicle noise, vibration
and harshness. As with all new Opel engines, the new 2.0 CDTI meets the stringent Euro 6
emission standards. Previously, the biggest weakness for the diesel engine has been the
emission of nitrogen oxides but thanks to Opel’s BlueInjection selective catalytic reduction
(SCR) system, nitrogen oxide is removed from the engine’s exhaust gases. This is enabled
through minute quantities of AdBlue®, a harmless fluid consisting of urea and water, which
is injected into the exhaust gas flow ahead of the SCR catalyst and downstream of the

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The solution is immediately converted into ammonia (NH3),
which is absorbed by the SCR catalyst. Nitrogen oxide in the passing exhaust gas is then
selectively reduced to harmless nitrogen and water vapour in a chemical reaction with the
ammonia.
The 2.0CDTI (170hp) Insignia engine is available on the Saloon, Hatchback, Sports Tourer
and Country Tourer and starts from €30,395. It’s available on the SC, well equipped SE,
sporty SRI Limited Edition and premium Elite trim. Later this year the new 2.0 CDTI will
also be introduced in the Zafira Tourer. It is also available in an automatic version.
1.6 CDTI: The whisper diesel
Hailed as the ‘whisper diesel’ by international trade media, Opel’s new generation allaluminum four-cylinder 1.6-litre diesel engine is a real highlight to Opel’s portfolio of
engines. Having made its debut in the Zafira Tourer, Meriva and Astra range, the all-new
1.6CDTI (136hp) replaces the outgoing 1.7CDTI engine on the Mokka and has been rated
as the quietest and most efficient in its class.
It impresses with outstanding refinement, low consumption of 4.1 litres of diesel per 100km
over the combined cycle which is equivalent to 109 g/km CO2, and qualifies in tax band A3,
€190 annual road tax. On the Mokka, the 1.6 CDTI accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in
9.9 seconds, and makes the transition from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear in just 9.9 seconds.
This new engine introduced on the Mokka SC and SE and is available from €25,245.
1.3 CDTI – the small but able consumption marvel
Opel have also just welcomed a new small diesel engine to the Corsa. The 1.3CDTI (95hp)
gives 190Nm of torque. Significant reductions in noise have been made and it offers
increased responsiveness. New-generation turbochargers ensure smooth driving and
acceleration at low engine speeds with minimal noise generation. Both versions come with
fuel-saving Start/Stop technology fitted as standard. The most frugal Corsa diesel version,
an automated Easytronic 3.0 transmission and braking energy recuperation system – can
reduce CO2 emissions down to just 82 g/km (€180annual road tax) and fuel consumption
to 3.1 l/100 km in the combined cycle. This new engine is offered on the five door Corsa
SE model and is priced at €19,495.
