POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: Chief Executive Officer REPORTS TO: Board of Directors PERFORMANCE REVIEW: Annual RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE OF INDIANA MISSION To provide a supportive home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill or injured children receiving medical care at Riley Hospital for Children and other Indianapolis hospitals. POSITION PURPOSE The CEO provides leadership for the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana [RMHI or the House] in support of its ongoing vision and mission. He/she serves as the principal representative for the RMHI with external stakeholders and leverages RMHI through establishing and strengthening relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, including McDonald’s Restaurants of Central Indiana, Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, as well as other key community partners and corporate, foundation and individual donors. The CEO builds organizational capacity and financial sustainability through continued fund development and implementation of strategic initiatives in conjunction with the Board of Directors and the staff team. He/she provides clear direction, leadership and motivation to the RMHI Board of Directors and staff. This position plays a substantial role in raising the RMHI’s reputation, recognition and influence within Central Indiana. The CEO will ensure programmatic excellence by ensuring consistent and high quality program and service delivery and by ensuring that the RMHI is implementing leading non-profit practices. The CEO will partner with his/her key reports, the Chief Operating Officer [COO] and the Chief Development Officer [CDO], in carrying out his/her responsibilities. Strategic Vision and Leadership Collaborates with the Board of Directors [BOD] and staff team to develop and implement the strategic plan ensuring that the budget, staff, and organizational goals are aligned with the RMHI core mission, and is primarily responsible for executing the strategic plan. Responsible for driving RMHI to achieve profitability, maintain positive cash flow and meet the business goals and objectives. Provides leadership and direction to the senior management team to ensure the continued development and management of a professional and efficient organization; and maintains an effective decision-making processes to enable RMHI to achieve both long and short term goals. Cultivates a strong and transparent working relationship with the BOD and ensures open communication regarding financial and programmatic performance. In partnership with the leadership of the BOD, maintains a diverse and inclusive Board that is highly engaged, willing to leverage and secure resources and fulfills its governance functions according to best practices and required standards. Stays abreast of external trends that could significantly impact the organization to achieve its mission. Development Works to expand the House’s brand within the communities served by RMHI in an effort to build a more robust stakeholder base and grow charitable donations year after year. Ensures that annual funding permits the RMHI to make continuous progress towards the achievement of its strategic initiatives and that the funds are allocated to reflect present needs and future potential. Ensures formulation and execution of comprehensive marketing, branding and development strategies that will enhance revenue from all sources including individual donors, foundations, and corporations as well as ongoing grassroots support. Operations and Programs Promotes a positive, supportive and motivating work environment, facilitates cross-departmental collaboration and ensures strong internal communications that supports consistency throughout the organization’s programs, operational methods and data collection needs. Ensures the delivery of high quality services while managing for current and future growth. Oversees the financial status of the organization including long and short range financial plans, effective budgeting, monitoring and sound financial controls and ensures that financial priorities reflect the needs of programming and staff. With appropriate input and approvals of the BOD and other senior staff members, reviews and revises staff duties and organizational structure. Other Attends all Board meetings and Executive Committee meetings. Ensures that all board committees have effective staff support and stays informed of all committee activities. Proposes an annual budget for board approval. Approves expenditures within the budget. Makes staff salary recommendations to the BOD and sets salaries within board-approved budget parameters. Serves as the primary media contact and spokesperson for the RMHI. Visits institutions around the state, makes speeches, appears on media outlets, and performs other duties in order to promote the House. Increases the House’s visibility and enhances its image. Establishes professional relationships with other organizational leaders within the RMHC system, in order to learn and share ideas related to growth, strategy and benchmarking. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR CREDENTIALS Bachelor’s degree, MBA, MPA, or related advanced degree preferred. At least ten years’ experience in a senior leadership position with a non-profit organization with a proven track record of success. Experience leading a staff team in a supportive manner with positive results. Knowledge of non-profit board governance best practices and extensive experience providing support and leadership to non-profit boards. Working experience in civic engagement and a background in management is required. Experience in operating multi-faceted programs, a demonstrated successful fundraising record, creativity, and evidence of servant leadership are also essential. An understanding and appreciation of the Ronald McDonald House history, organizational make-up and mission. LEADERSHIP A passion for children’s charities, community involvement, and good stewardship. A strong belief in and reputation for principle-centered leadership. Superior ability to interact and communicate with a variety of people, on a one-on-one basis and in meetings and public presentations, as well as through phone, e-mail, written reports and correspondence. An effective negotiator able to achieve consensus and build coalitions among stakeholders with differing opinions. Strong capacity to provide intellectual and visionary leadership to the staff, board, and stakeholders of the House. Superior ability to make independent decisions, delegate responsibility and duties, and incorporate key inputs into daily activities. SKILLS AND ABILITIES Superior ability to think logically in order to troubleshoot, analyze present/future situations, and make sound business decisions. Must be outgoing, compassionate, flexible, assertive, trustworthy and professional in manner. Strong organizational and project management skills. Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the non-profit and philanthropic sector. An effective external networker for the House. Ability to develop and implement long-range plans. Ability and willingness to travel throughout the state and regionally, as needed.
