Fahrenheit 451 Final Project Options Choose one of the following projects to work on individually or in a group (with no more than three members). The project will be worth 150 points. Remember to be creative but appropriate! Each project must be neat and organized. Effort must be visible. The grade is based on creativity, neatness, accuracy, and effort. Writing must be typed. Choose a project that appeals to your own personal talents and interests. *There is a big difference between something you jot down in a few minutes and something you put time into. 1. WRITING There are many literary allusions in Fahrenheit 451. Choose five quotes from literature in the book (include the page numbers). Then explain if and how each quote relates to the novel. The quotes and explanations must be typed (double spaced, 12-14 point, easily read font). Include a works cited page for your sources (MLA format). 2.RESEARCH/WRITING Research the history of fire departments, their equipment, and some famous fires. You might also want to interview a firefighter in your community to find out what services your fire department provides. Type (double spaced, 12-14 point, easily read font) a summary of your findings. Include a works cited page for your sources (MLA format). 3. RESEARCH/WRITING Find out which books on “The 100 Most Frequently Challenged” list are missing from either our middle school library or the high school library. Select five of the missing books and write a proposal to the school librarian and principal explaining why they are important for students to have in the school’s library and should be ordered. Type (double spaced, 12-14 point, easily read font). Include a works cited page for your sources (MLA format). 4. VIDEO Choose a scene from the novel that is especially important. With a group of students, type a script for the scene and film it. Hand in a typed copy of your script (double spaced, 12-14 point, easily read font) 5. VIDEO Imagine you are a TV reporter interviewing Mildred’s friends after the fire and the murder. Give your on-thescene report. Hand in a typed copy of the script (double spaced, 12-14 point, easily read font). 6. WRITING Create your own dystopia. Write about a futuristic time in which society has gone awry. Similar to the idea that books are harmful and should be burned, what is the current trend/belief in society that is overriding common sense. Introduce us to your protagonist. Will she/he be successful in their quest or will she/he ultimately fail? (2-4 typed, double space, 1214 point, easily read font). 7. COMIC BOOK Draw a comic book complete with bubble-style conversations showing several important incidents in Fahrenheit 451. 8. CD SOUNDTRACK *Make your own soundtrack for Fahrenheit 451. Create a playlist of at least 5 songs, and then “burn” a CD (using legal sites like itunes, Zune Marketplace, etc.) in the order they would appear in the book. Create a CD jacket that illustrates the book (in your eyes). This should be in color. Also include the titles, and performers of the songs in the order they appear in the jacket. *Type a list of the song titles, along with the artists, where the song fits into the book (page number required), and explain the action occurring when the song would be playing.) Along with the list, explain your reasoning for choosing your selection. Include a works cited page for your sources (MLA format). 9. FLASH DRIVE Imagine that you find a flash drive next to the computer of Montag, Clarisse, Mildred, Beatty, or Faber. The drive contains personal documents: letters, music, photos, “To do” lists, data, saved emails, facebook profile info., poems written by the character for his or her eyes alone, etc. Decide on 4 or 5 documents or files, recreate them, invent file names for each and create a fake printout of the drive directory (or table of contents) showing all of the filenames. Print all of these documents and place them together in a packet about the character. *The four or five files you recreate cannot be all photos, or all music. They must be a combination of different files. Include a works cited 10. WRITING Write an original ending for Fahrenheit 451. First give the plot summary, and then supply your own ending as if you were the author (1-2 typed, double spaced, 12-14 point, easily read font). 11. WEBSITES Create a list of favorite websites a character in the book would most frequently visit. Include 3-5 sentences (typed, double spaced, 12-14 point, easily read font).for each on why your character likes each of the sites. Include a works cited page for your sources (MLA format). . 12. WRITING Exaggerate either characteristics or events and write a tabloid-style news story related to the book. Include illustrations. The story must be typed (1-2 typed, double spaced, 12-14 point, easily read font). 13. BOARD GAME Create a board game based on events and characters in the book. By playing your game, members of your class should learn what happened in the book. Your game must include the following: a game board, a rule sheet, and clear directions. 14. CURRENT EVENTS Gather a collection (at least 10 -20) of current events (from the newspaper, magazine, or the Internet) that reflect incidents that closely parallel those in the novel. Write 4-5 sentences about each article. Include a works cited page for your sources (MLA format). 15. WRITING Wouldn’t it be great if you could interview Ray Bradbury? Well, here’s your chance. Imagine that Ray Bradbury, the author, is a terrific friend of yours. Write out an imaginary telephone conversation between the two of you in which you discuss the book and other things as well. (1-2 pages typed, double spaced, 12-14 point, easily read font). Include a works cited page for your sources (MLA format). 16. POEM 17. COLLAGE 18. ART 19. SONG 20. OPTIONS Write one long poem (at least 30 lines) or at least three short poems (totaling at least 30 lines) in the form of your choosing about the story, a theme from the story, or one or more of the characters. The poem can be from your own perspective or it can be from the perspective of one of the characters—for example, Lennie is writing the poem or George, etc. (I don’t want elementary school rhyming “roses are red/violets are blue/Lennie is sweet/and George is, too.” —I want thought and insight.) Create a mobile or collage (at least 11 x 14) that captures one important aspect of the story— it can be about one character or one theme, etc. (When making a collage, the poster board should be filled) Write an explanation for each item you chose to include. Explain: why did you include it, what does it represent? Capture your impressions of Montag or Mildred in any form you choose (drawing, collage, paper mache, essay, etc.) Write a brief description of your image. Write/perform a song/rap characterizing an aspect of the story. (Make sure when you write it, it looks like a song written in stanzas with a chorus.) You may choose to do something else that is creative and that represents the story in some way, but you must get the project approved, first. (Think something with computers.)
