PURPOSE/OVERVIEW

To read the novel, Animal Farm by George Orwell, and compare/contrast the ideas found in the novel with those of communism or socialism.

How are Communism and Socialism reflected in Animal Farm?

What is the Cold War and how did it affect the U.S.?

Blank former Soviet Union map http://www.geog.byu.edu/Assets/Maps/russia.pdf

Blank Asia map http://www.geog.byu.edu/Assets/Maps/asia2.pdf

Atlas with both the former Soviet Union and current Asian countries present.

MAP INTEGRATION:

Have students label both the blank Soviet Union map and the current Asia map with the corresponding countries using the atlas.

Compare/Contrast the current map with the former Soviet Union map as to the reach of the

Soviet Union and the countries it contained.

PROCEDURE: (include activity sheets)

Lecture/Discussion: The Soviet Union, The U.S., and the Cold War. Explain the key figures, events, and ideas that led to the Cold War. Include the ideas of socialism, communism, and a democracy.

Activity: Students will label both the Soviet Union map and the Asia map with the correct countries.

Discussion/Research: Soviet leadership, treatment of Soviet citizens, and the government of the
