The Spanish Conquest
of Mexico
In 1519, Hernando Cortes, a Spanish conqueror, arrived at the coast of
Mexico with his ships and 600 soldiers. He wanted to conquer Mexico.
He found there a very advanced civilization called the Aztecs who
controlled most of Mexico. Their king, Montezuma, ruled from the
capital city, Tenochititlan. This city was larger than any city in Europe
and had about 150,000 inhabitants.
The Aztecs were amazed when they saw Cortes and his army of soldiers
because the Spanish had pale skin, pale eyes, and some had red hair.
They thought that Cortes and his army were gods and brought them food
and gifts of gold.
When Cortes saw the gold, he knew that this was a very rich people and
he wanted more. He captured Montezuma and made him a hostage,
thinking that now the Aztec people would be afraid of him and his army.
But the Aztecs were angry and started to fight against the Spanish. There
was a great battle between the two peoples and, eventually, the Aztecs
drove the Spanish out of their city.
But when the Spanish arrived in Mexico, they brought a terrible disease
with them – smallpox. The Aztecs had no immunity to smallpox, and this
disease, together with the great battle, killed about 75% of their
population. The Spanish re-entered Tenochititlan and destroyed it, and
later, built Mexico City on top of it.

THE BODY SHOP
Anita Lucia Perilli was born to Italian immigrants in a bomb shelter in
England in 1942. She became Anita Roddick when she married a
Scotsman, Gordon Roddick, in 1970.
Before she met her husband, she came to an Israeli kibbutz after she read
a book on the Holocaust. She was fascinated by the different lifestyle on
the kibbutz and she decided to continue traveling to other countries in the
world.
During her travels, she watched how primitive, native women of poor
countries used different plants and oils to take care of their bodies. She
grew up in the years during and after World War II, when everything was
scarce. Her mother taught her how to re-use empty jars and pots by
refilling them. These two things, learned from the primitive, native
women and her mother, gave her the idea of The Body Shop.
She opened the first Body Shop in Brighton, England in 1976. Now, 33
years later, it is a multi-million dollar business with over 2,000 shops in
51 countries, selling products made only from natural, organically grown
materials, to more than 77 million customers.
When you go to The Body Shop, take your empty jar or pot with you.
You can get it refilled with the same cream or oil that it originally
contained.

THE DEAD SEA

THE HAIRDRESSER
I recently finished a one-year course in hairdressing. The course was at the
Vidal Sassoon School in London. The teachers were all professional
hairdressers and each one had his/her own specialty. For example: some taught
us how to cut hair; others taught us how to dye hair; skin experts taught us
about different kinds of skin problems; hair stylists showed us different
hairstyles to suit each person. Every Wednesday, the school had an open day
when people could come to get their hair cut and styled for free. This gave us
students plenty of practice.
Now that I am back in Israel, I need to look for a job. I saw many ads in the
"Professional Hairdressing" magazine; one of them seems to be exactly the
kind of job I'm looking for. The salon is called "Looking Good" and is on
Carmel Avenue in Tel Aviv. I think I suit all their requirements because they
are looking for a hairdresser who has good background knowledge. The chief
hairdresser at the salon will interview all who apply for the job and choose the
hairdresser he or she thinks will be the best for the salon.
I am going to write a letter to the salon to ask for an interview.
