What is Lives Worth Living?
Lives Worth Living is a 4-week, May-term course held at a retreat
center on the southwestern prairies of Minnesota. Also commonly known as Philosophy Camp, this program
provides an enriching alternative to traditional education that, by creating a tightknit community among
teachers and students, allows all learners to deeply explore topics such as education, vocation, sustainability,
social change, and what it means to live a meaningful life in this world. While living simply in the natural
environment, we share stories, cook and eat healthy foods, undertake art projects, visit organic farmers local to
the area, take part in community events in the local town of Windom, and explore ways that we will bring our
ideals for community and justice back into our daily lives.
Who are the instructors? This is the tenth anniversary of the Lives Worth Living course! There are four
instructors who have been dedicated to the program since its beginning and who are a true blessing to the community,
each bringing their own rich wisdom and personality to the prairie. John Wallace is a longtime and beloved faculty member
of the University of Minnesota’s philosophy department. Philosophy Camp rests deep in his heart and has been
the blossoming of a life-long dream. John has a strong faith in the natural talents and potentials of all learners, and his ideals
for an education system which Is based on this trust are alive in his patient and encouraging style of teaching. Lynn Englund
is a compassionate and generous soul who has a wealth of experience on how to create intentional communities in our daily
lives. She dedicates much of her time to teaching students practical skills for living in community. Lynn also teaches
freshman through graduate students at the University. Nance Longley is a highly creative and inspiring person who brings
her love of artwork to the community. Each year, she sets up a book-making studio, where her energy is spent encouraging
all learners to explore their inner creativity. Nance works as a graphic designer at the University and is pursuing a PhD in
graphic design. Peter Shea has an enormous gift for challenging the normal patterns of thinking in society and continually
contributes fresh and stimulating ideas to group discussion. He pushes students to think deeply and critically about their
lives and is highly appreciative of students who offer their genuine selves. Peter is a philosophy instructor at various
universities and does extensive work in children’s philosophy.
We need your help!
Students who participate in the 4-week program, from May 23-June 17, earn 6 credits
through the University of Minnesota. Many students benefit greatly from participating in this program, as it provides a
nourishing social space to make life-long friends and is a place to grow as individuals, community members and citizens.
However, the cost of the program prevents many interested individuals in making this happen. Please join us for this
special night to help make this exceptional opportunity a possibility for all inspired learners!
