Notes Listen to Me (Abortion) Roe vs. Wade Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973), a landmark case decided by the United States Supreme Court on the issue of abortion, is one of the most controversial and politically significant cases in U.S. Supreme Court history. The Court held that a woman may abort her pregnancy for any reason, up until the "point at which the fetus becomes 'viable' at about seven months (28 weeks) but may occur earlier, even at 24 weeks."[ The Court rested these conclusions on a constitutional right to privacy emanating from the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, also known as substantive due process. Due process is the principle that the government must respect all of the legal rights that are owed to a person according to the law. Roe v. Wade prompted a national debate that continues today, about issues including whether and to what extent abortion should be legal, who should decide the legality of abortion, what methods the Supreme Court should use in constitutional adjudication, and what the role should be of religious and moral views in the political sphere. Roe v. Wade reshaped national politics, dividing much of the nation into pro-Roe (mostly pro-choice) and anti-Roe (mostly pro-life) camps, while activating grassroots movements on both sides. Group 3 Fighting Aids 21* Pneumonia Sontag, Susan: AIDS and Its Metaphors AIDS and Its Metaphors is the companion book to Illness as Metaphor, also by Susan Sontag. While Illness as Metaphor drew on her experiences as a cancer patient and focused on the various metaphors that we attribute to cancer, AIDS and Its Metaphors extends this argument to the AIDS crisis. Both books explore how attitudes to disease are formed in society, and attempt to deconstruct them. Its earlier years were marked by an affliction of very specific risk groups – homosexual men and intravenous drug users – it has been stigmatized. The patient’s illness is perceived to be the patient's fault, because of the unsafe habits that one seemingly has to pursue to contract it – "indulgence, delinquency – addictions to chemicals that are illegal and to sex regarded as deviant." Having these defined subgroups created a distinction between the ill and potentially ill, and the general population. Cancer was at one time the identity of a patient. It was a shameful and stigmatized condition, and was often omitted from obituaries and concealed from as many people as possible. Often, it was perceived to be a curse or a punishment. Sontag claims that AIDS has taken over on all counts, and that AIDS patients now suffer the same, or worse, judgment and stigmatization that cancer patients once did. Wine tasting is the sensory examination and evaluation of wine. Wines are made up of chemical compounds which are similar or identical to those in fruits, vegetables, and spices. The sweetness of wine is determined by the amount of residual sugar in the wine after fermentation, relative to the acidity present in the wine. Dry wine, for example, has only a small amount of residual sugar. Inexperienced wine drinkers often tend to mistake the taste of ripe fruit for sweetness when, in fact, the wine in question is very dry. The red wines have Resveratrol which is a anti ageing compound. For red wines that are already highly aromatic, like Chinon and Beaujolais, many people prefer them chilled. There are reasons people now paying attention to the topic not because it can be found the main theme in some movies but also literature. People feel more individualized in choosing the relationship in their life; however, I still feel the duty of a person being born into a family important. Women in western world can’t feel complete until they become a mother. We also can not deny the pursuit of happiness for everybody. Many people who feel attracted to members of their own sex have a so-called "coming out" at some point in their lives. Generally, coming out is described in three phases. The first phase is the phase of "knowing oneself," and the realization or decision emerges that one is open to same-sex relations. This is often described as an internal coming out. The second phase involves one's decision to come out to others, e.g. family, friends, and/or colleagues. This occurs with many people as early as age 11, but others do not clarify their sexual orientation until age 40 or older. The third phase more generally involves living openly as an LGBT person. (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) In the United States today, people often come out during high school or college age. At this age, they may not trust or ask for help from others, especially when their orientation is not accepted in society. Sometimes their own families are not even informed Currently the most common adjectives in use are lesbian for women and gay for men, though gay can refer to either men or women. If your brother or sister or child is a homo, what would you react to him or her? heterosexuality, preference or desire for the opposite sex. Bisexuality Born that way Theory Twin Studies Martin and others at the University of Queensland. Using the 14,000+ Australian twin collection, they found that if one twin was homosexual, 38% of the time his identical brother was too. For lesbianism the concordance was 30%. Whether 30% or 50% concordance (snowball samples), all the studies agree it is clearly not 100%. The critical factor is that if one identical twin is homosexual, only sometimes is the co-twin homosexual. There is no argument about this in the scientific community. Identical twins have identical genes. If homosexuality was a biological condition produced inescapably by the genes (e.g. eye color), then if one identical twin was homosexual, in 100% of the cases his brother would be too. Family factors may be an influence, but on average do not compel people to be homosexual. What Causes Homosexual Desire and Can It Be Changed? By Paul Cameron, Ph. D. (The quoted passage is about the scientific truth found out by scientist.) The scientific truth is - our genes don't force us into anything. But we can support or suppress our genetic tendencies. We can foster them or foil them. If we reinforce our genetic tendencies thousands of times (even if only through homoerotic fantasy), is it surprising that it is hard to change? Similarly, we have a genetic tendency to eat, but it is possible to foster this tendency and overeat for the pleasure it brings. If we repeat that often enough, we will not only reinforce a genetic tendency to become overweight, but find that "starving" the habit takes a long time! Gunpowder smoke. nine real cars pierced with blinking light tubes simulating the trajectory of a car-bomb explosion; piles of broken glass under a mangled yak skin boat constructed of fiberglass and bamboo—all currently on view the Guggenheim Museum. Who is the creator of this heaped-up assortment of strange entanglements? It was while living in Japan from l986 to l995 that the artist turned to gunpowder as a medium in his drawings, leading to experimentation with explosives on a massive scale as in his series Projects for Extraterrestrials. It was also while living in Japan that the artist became internationally renown. There is certainly novelty in the artist’s approach as well as in his use of artistic means. He has referenced a variety of concepts and materials—both Western and Non-western—from feng shui, Chinese medicine, and dragons, to gunpowder, roller coasters, and vending machines. With such a plethora of diverse materials, a viewer may well ask, what is it, exactly, that the artist wants to believe? Is his gunpowder meant to symbolize his wish to end international unease? Are his mushroom clouds intended to make an appeal to eliminate the contemporary horrors of war? In Cry Dragon/City Wolf: The Art of Genhis Khan, l996, for example, the artist merges 106 sheepskin bags, wooden branches, paddles, rope, three Toyota engines, and photocopies of various magazine covers and article clippings. What does this amalgam add up to? Does the artist wish to merge the old and the new, the natural and the manmade, the useful and the contemporary modes of diversion, or is it simply that the materials make an art object that is strange and engrossing? Materials, materials—an artist’s tools and symbols—sometimes bewildering, sometimes perplexing, but in Guo-Qiang’s case, always astonishing. How do you like his art? Do you think an artist should be so creative and new like that? What does he want to show with his arts? From the beginning, the artist’s work has been scholarly with political implications. Early on the artist began working with gunpowder to insure spontaneity and, as the catalogue informs us, to “confront the suppression that he felt from the controlled artistic tradition and climate in China at the time.” He agrees with the Maoist slogan “to revolt is justified,” saying that, “Anything that disrupts the usual and consensual rule or law is considered good.” Yet one must remember that the artist has made works addressed to extraterrestrials. Indeed, he is very much of this world, one that he would like to make more egalitarian (a social philosophy advocating the removal of economic inequalities among people.). However, he still searches for his utopic visions in extraterrestrial realms beyond the limitations of mere earthlings. Both of these English-language terms have more emphatically negative connotations of poor social skills and obsessive interest in a topic that seems strange, niche or boring to others. otaku (オタク) and wotaku (ヲタク) are used interchangeably, depending on the mood and personal style of the poster. In modern Japanese slang, the term otaku refers to a fan of any particular theme, topic, or hobby. Common uses are anime otaku (a fan of anime), cosplay otaku and manga otaku (a fan of Japanese comic books), pasokon otaku (personal computer geeks), gēmu otaku (playing video games), and wota (pronounced 'ota', previously referred to as "idol otaku") that are extreme fans of idols, heavily promoted singing girls. Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas which enables body cells to absorb glucose, to turn into energy. If the body cells do not absorb the glucose, the glucose accumulates in the blood (hyperglycemia), leading to vascular, nerve, and other complications. Type 1 diabetes: results from the body's failure to produce insulin, and presently requires the person to inject insulin. Type 2 diabetes: results from insulin resistance, a condition in which cells fail to use insulin properly, sometimes combined with an absolute insulin deficiency. Gestational diabetes: is when pregnant women, who have never had diabetes before, have a high blood glucose level during pregnancy. It may precede development of type 2 DM. Group 2 Compulsive Behavior/Compulsive disorder 88~79 Once I quoted someone who said that we could get used to things when we saw them without flinching. Things like needles have points sharp which we don’t really want to see at all. However, when you force yourself to see it once, twice until you get used to it, it won’t be a problem for you. Face something you are afraid of until you overcome it. Are such patients depressed in some ways? Do not care about it. Most of them are caused by psychological problem. You cite a lot from movies. Tell us what the pictures want to show after you show the segments to us. The segments are included to show the symptom of OCD not just the story. Have you heard of this term? What are some examples of compulsive behavior? Washing hands, blinking eyes, belching, shaking head, laughing, etc. Can it be healed? How do we prevent from getting this disorder? Behavioral therapy, medication, treatment in adults and children Movies and television often portray accurately-idealized representations of disorders such as OCD. These depictions may lead to increased public awareness, understanding, and sympathy for such disorders. Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts that produce anxiety, by repetitive behaviors aimed at reducing anxiety, or by a combination of such thoughts (obsessions) and behaviors (compulsions). The symptoms of this anxiety disorder include repetitive hand-washing; extensive hoarding; preoccupation with sexual or aggressive impulses, or with particular religious beliefs; aversion to odd numbers; and nervous habits, such as opening a door and closing it a certain number of times before one enters or leaves a room. These symptoms can be alienating and time-consuming, and often cause severe emotional and economic loss. The acts of those who have OCD may appear paranoid and come across to others as psychotic. However, OCD sufferers generally recognize their thoughts and subsequent actions as irrational, and they may become further distressed by this realization. For example, a generalized fear of contamination might entail not only wariness of bodily secretions or excretions, but also apprehension toward household chemicals, radioactivity, newsprint, pets, or even soap. Sexual obsessions Compulsions include counting specific things (such as footsteps like Samuel Johnson) or in specific ways (for instance, by intervals of two) and doing other repetitive actions, often with atypical sensitivity to numbers or patterns. People might repeatedly wash their hands or clear their throats, repeatedly check that their parked cars have been locked before leaving them, turn lights on and off, keep doors shut or closed at all times, touch objects a certain number of times before exiting a room, or walk in a certain routine way like only stepping on a certain color of tile. People rely on compulsions as an escape from their obsessive thoughts; however, they are aware that the relief is only temporary, that the intrusive thoughts will soon come back. Some people use compulsions to avoid situations that may trigger their obsessions. Although some people do certain things over and over again, they don't necessarily perform these actions compulsively. For example, bedtime routines, learning a new skill, and religious practices are not compulsions. Whether or not behaviors are compulsions or mere habit depends on the context in which the behaviors are performed. The cognitive–behavioral model suggests that compulsive behaviour is carried out to remove anxiety-provoking intrusive thoughts. Unfortunately this only brings about temporary relief as the thought re-emerges. Each time the behaviour occurs it is negatively reinforced by the relief from anxiety, thereby explaining why the dysfunctional activity increases and generalizes (extends to other, related stimuli) over a period of time. For example, after touching a door-knob a person might have the thought that they may develop a disease as a result of contamination. They then experience anxiety, which is relieved when they wash their hands. This might be followed by the thought "but did I wash them properly?" causing an increase in anxiety once more, the hand-washing once again rewarded by the removal of anxiety (albeit briefly) and the cycle being repeated when thoughts of contamination re-occur. The distressing thoughts might then spread to fear of contamination from e.g. a chair (someone might have touched the chair after touching the door handle). The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that more than two percent of the U.S. population suffers from obsessive–compulsive disorder or OCD. Approximately 50% of men that suffer from obsessive–compulsive disorder, suffer from sexual side-effects as a result of OCD,… Top Mid-term Guided Topics 2010/3, your group may find the latest topics from Time. A tough but interesting topic. Stereoscopic motion pictures can be produced through a variety of different methods. Over the years the popularity of various systems being widely employed in movie theaters has waxed and waned. Though anaglyph (see next section) was sometimes used prior to 1948, during the early "Golden Era" of 3-D cinematography of the 1950s the polarization system was used for every single feature length movie in the United states, and all but one short film. In the 21st century, polarization (waves) 3-D systems have continued to dominate the scene, though during the 60s and 70s some classic films which were converted to anaglyph for theaters not equipped for polarization, and were even shown in 3-D on TV. In the years following the 90s, some movies were made with short segments in anaglyph 3D. Following are some of the technical details and methodologies employed in some of the more notable 3-D movie systems that have been developed. 3-D film Stereoscopy (also called stereoscopic or 3-D imaging) is any technique capable of recording three-dimensional visual information or creating the illusion of depth in an image. Ultimately, the technology has to find a way to present each eye with a different variation of an image, at that point our eyes and brain do the rest. 6/24 Group 6 Sephiroth’s incoming trip A+ 83~98 An excellent job, so entertaining and educational. Parade A parade (also called march or marchpast) is a procession of people, usually organized along a street, often in costume, and often accompanied by marching bands, floats or sometimes large balloons. Parades are held for a wide range of reasons, but are usually celebrations of some kind. In Britain the term parade is usually reserved for either military parades or other occasions where participants march in formation; for celebratory occasions the word procession is more usual. In the Canadian Forces the term also has several less formal connotations. Ice cream Ice cream or ice-cream is a frozen dessert usually made from dairy products, such as milk and cream, and often combined with fruits or other ingredients and flavours. Most varieties contain sugar, although some are made with other sweeteners. In some cases, artificial flavourings and colourings are used in addition to (or in replacement of) the natural ingredients. This mixture is stirred slowly while cooling to prevent large ice crystals from forming; the result is a smoothly textured ice cream.
