Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair
The UK’s Most Anarchic Art Fair Returns
- Brand new line-up of artists, fabulous entertainment, artisan food and high end art bargains - Brick Lane, London, Sunday 14th June –
The day the art-world lets its hair down is back and set to kick off this summer on Sunday 14th June
with a fresh line-up of artists and brand new entertainment including Dog in a Boot Show, Vauxhall
Art Car Bonnets, Daylight Cabaret and more. In the heart of Shoreditch, at the Brick Lane Yard, a mix
of established and up-and-coming artists personally pitch up to sell their original and limited edition
works of art out of the back of new and vintage Vauxhall cars.
Returning artists include Tracey Emin, True Rocks with Rachel Howard, Polly Morgan, Gavin Turk,
Ben Eine, Pam Hogg, Bob and Roberta Smith, Marcus Harvey and Turps Banana and Kristijana
Williams who return to sell limited edition pieces, created just for the day. New artists including Vic
Reeves, Lisa Milroy, Dolores de Sade, Barry Reigate, Elli Popp and Holly Allan will also join the lineup of artists selling work at authentically bargain prices.
This year a select number of artists including Rachel Howard, Ben Eine, Vic Reeves and Matt Small
will be creating art pieces using car bonnets provided by Vauxhall Motors as their canvas. The
Vauxhall Art Car Bonnets will be auctioned on the day to raise money for charity. The car park will be
full with English eccentricity, incredible bargains, cool art, eclectic wares and madcap performances
including Richard Strange’s Daylight Cabaret.
Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair founder and curator, Karen Ashton, comments on this year’s event,
“This year the Art Car Boot Fair is all about packing even more into our car park, exciting new artists,
extraordinary performances and a dog show to boot, literally in the boot – we have a lightly canine
theme for 2014 and lots to announce over the coming weeks”.
Speaking about the upcoming event, Denis Chick, Director of Communications at Vauxhall Motors
said, “The Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair has a special place in our event calendar, showcasing the best
of British art and for one-day only, making it accessible to anyone and everyone. It also gives us a
chance to ‘fire up’ our fabulous Vauxhall heritage fleet. Whether it’s the Victor Estate which cost
£861 13s 1d in 1963, ‘droop snoot’ Firenza inspired by Concorde, or Viva HA which sold over 100,000
in only 10 months after its introduction, the cars on display take people down memory lane. People
keep coming back for more and this year is set to be another rip-roaring art success, with some
interesting announcements to come.”
The Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair is an art-buying frenzy from the moment the doors open to the
thousand plus queue, waiting for the chance to grab the special just-for-the-day artworks. There’s
something for every pocket with works typically on sale for between £10 to £1,000.

About Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair
The first Art Car Boot Fair was held in London in 2004 with a line-up of around 30 artists including
Gavin Turk, Abigail Lane, Mat Collishaw, Fiona Banner and Bob & Roberta Smith. It has been held
every year since, except for 2005. The main aim of the Art Car Boot Fair is to be a day when the
artists let their hair down and for all-comers to engage with art and the artists in an informal way,
and to pick up some real art bargains to boot.
The Art Car Boot Fair is a fun and exciting one day event combining a car boot sale and an art fair.
Originated and produced by Karen Ashton, a curator and independent art consultant and writer, the
ideas behind the Art Car Boot Fair developed out of Joshua Compston’s ‘Fete Worse than Death’ and
Gavin Turk’s ‘Livestock Market’ and ‘Articultural Shows’, Hoxton based events that blazed a trail in
the late 90’s. The first Art Car Boot Fair picked up where they left off with the intention of reintroducing some summer fun and frivolity into a thriving but increasingly commercial London art
scene.
Participation as an artist in the Art Car Boot Fair is by invitation only. There is no pitch fee and no
transaction with the organisers. We work with well-known and up and coming artists who all buy
into the idea of making their work accessible to a wide audience on the day. The event now features
a line-up of over 70 artists. The event is at once cool, stylish, eccentric and bursting with incredible
art bargains.
