Principles of Business – The Big Squeeze Name: _________________________ Business Environment Journal Instructions Driving question: What factors affect the business you have been studying in our community, and how does the business respond to these factors? Part I – The following items need to be hole-punched in your Business Environment Journal. Cover page o Include title (Business Environment Journal), your name, date, class (Principles of Business), period 6, Mrs. Tobe, and a graphic or clip art of your choice that relates to business. Section Dividers o Include one page for each of the following topics: 1. Business Trends 2. Cultural and Social Issues 3. Economic Conditions 4. Ethical Issues 5. Global Relationships 6. Global Trade 7. Government Impact 8. Legal Issues 9. Technology o Sections dividers should have the title of the topic and a graphic or clip art relating to business or the topic. End Page o Blank sheet that indicates the end of the Business Environment Journal. Part II- For each section mentioned above, you will have 3 to 5 articles pertaining to the topic. Some topics will be easier to find than others. Finding Sources Searching involves searching the library catalogs, indexes, databases, and Internet resources. Scholarly journal or article (on-line) To find article on the Library Database: Go to Website high school home page, click the library link, go Book to Infohio, then Grade 9-12, click EBSCO, and Encyclopedia/electronic media Popular Writing (magazine or newspaper) then click 9-12. Type the search words in the Primary Document textbox. Username – think Password - infohio Magazines for your consideration: Business Week Money Business World Technology Review Newsweek The Economist Time PC World Harvard Business Review Fortune Entrepreneur PC Magazine Wired Forbes Business 2.0 Fast Company Search current (no more 6 months old), relevant business periodicals and newspapers for current events that coincide with the factors that you are researching. Make sure they articles are long enough o have a one-page reflection. Ex. These articles can count toward one of the articles you need for that section. Ex. – Kraig Noble, Court Case handout, Legal Issues. You can also use the government regulation Current Event Article as one for the Government Impact section. Attach a copy of the articles referenced to the applicable journal page. Part III- After each article, you will need to include a typed reflection page. The reflection should be double spaced, one inch margins, Times New Roman, and 12 pt font. Reflection – The reflection CANNOT be copied and pasted from the article or another source!!! Remember this is an individual project. Write a one-page typed reflection that includes: Header ( view – header/footer) o Your name – line 1 o Name of topic – line 2 o Date typed – line 3 A one-paragraph summary of the article o A summary is a shortened version of the original. o The main purpose of such a simplification is to highlight the major points from the original article. A summary clearly expresses the main idea of a text and often contains any definitions of important words in the text. o The target is to help the audience get the gist in a short period of time. o The summary is the article paraphrased with new words without quotations from the text. It does NOT use the original words of the article’s author. o When you write a summary, you first look for the most important ideas. o Then, you then put all the main ideas together, in a logical order. o A summary does NOT express the reader's opinion. A one-paragraph description of how that current event affects businesses (either directly or indirectly). o Discuss the factor that is addressed in the article. o Relate the article to the information covered in class about the topic. (Use your notes for this part) Work Cited o Please use correct formatting. o Refer back to the Starbuck report for more assistance. o Single space the work cited section of the reflection.
