- PRESS RELEASE – DON’T MISS AWARD WINNING DRAMA - JOURNEY’S END AT MILTON KEYNES THEATRE Journey’s End, the multi award-winning production that won critical acclaim in the West End and on Broadway, comes to Milton Keynes Theatre 20 – 24 Sep. The Olivier-nominated, Tony and Drama Desk award winning production of R.C.Sherriff’s First World War masterpiece, directed by David Grindley still has resonance as it recounts of the horrors of conflict and gives a rare insight about the adverse mental effects life at the Front can entail. Journey’s End was written by R.C. Sherriff in 1928, and is based upon his own experiences during the First World War. In November 1915, Sherriff volunteered and was granted a post in the East Surrey Regiment. He arrived at the Front Line of the Western Front in 1916, aged 20, serving at Vimy and Loos. Sherriff was severely wounded at Passchendaele, near Ypres, in 1917 by a shell which exploded close-by, and was sent back to England, where he remained for the rest of the war. He was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery during the war. This production originally opened at the Comedy Theatre in January 2004 and was an immediate revelation. Taking audiences by surprise with its beautifully understated evocation of war, Journey’s End won unanimous critical acclaim. It transferred to the Playhouse Theatre and then to the Duke of York’s and went on to complete two major tours around the United Kingdom, in 2004 and 2005, most recently returning to the Duke of York’s in the West End for a sell out run prior to the latest UK Tour. Set in the British trenches at St Quentin in 1918, in the days leading up to Operation Michael on March 21st, the last great German Offensive of the First World War, a day that saw the deaths of 38,000 men. A company of officers prepare for a daring raid across No Man’s Land to gather intelligence. Eighteen-yearold 2nd Lieutenant Raleigh is the new arrival in the company commanded by his former schoolboy friend, Captain Stanhope. There’s only three years between them, but a lifetime of experience separates the pair as Raleigh discovers that the man in army greens is much changed from the boy he left behind in cricketing whites Journey’s End celebrates humour and courage in the face of certain tragedy, and remains an important reminder of the horrors of war and the real, unromanticised heroes who fought it. Journey’s End is directed by David Grindley and is designed by Jonathan Fensom, with lighting by Jason Taylor and sound by Gregory Clarke. Cast include Graham Butler, Tim Chipping, Andy Daniel, Simon Harrison, Daniel Hanna, Nigel Hastings, Mike Hayley, Dominic Mafham, James Norton, Christian Patterson and Tony Turner.
