CITY OF SAMMAMISH POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: DEPARTMENT: REPORTS TO: SALARY RANGE: Assistant Beach Manager Parks and Recreation Recreation Coordinator and Beach Manager $14.00 - $19.00/Hour GENERAL PURPOSE: This position assists with planning, organizing, implementing, coordinating, and supervising seasonal beach front programs and services at Pine Lake Park. The work requires excellent communication and customer services skills due to considerable public contact. HOURS AND DURATION: Approximately 30 hours of pre-season work (April – May) is required to prepare for the lifeguard season. The lifeguard season typically runs from Fathers Day through Labor Day and the Assistant Beach Front Manager will be expected to work 30-40 hours per week during the season. Weekly hours may vary depending on weather conditions and beach attendance. Please do not apply if you cannot complete the entire season. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the Beach Front Manager and the Recreation Coordinator. Will work independently with the public and other City staff members. Will exercise substantial independent judgment regarding management of the beach front. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Assists the Beach Front Manager with supervision over the lifeguard staff. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists with scheduling, coordinating and overseeing the daily operation of the beach front at Pine Lake Park. Provides quality customer service and public education on water safety to park visitors. Assists with recruitment, training, supervision and evaluation of the lifeguard staff. Assists with coordination of pre-season training and testing and weekly in-service training. Performs lifeguarding responsibilities on a regular basis. Ensures proper behavior and adherence to rules on the part of all park patrons. Responds quickly to potentially hazardous situations and accidents. Assures the cleanliness of the beach front area, the docks, the restrooms and adjacent areas of the park. Performs custodial duties as needed. Maintains a safe environment for all park visitors. Informs supervisor of maintenance needs or hazardous conditions at the park. Oversees the use, care and inventory of City supplies and all beach front equipment Opens and secures the facilities as needed. Maintains appropriate records including daily logs of beach attendance, training records for all staff, and incident/accident reports related to beach activities. Serves as a point of contact for beach front visitors. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: Lifeguarding techniques, usage of equipment and first aid practices. Supervisory practices and principals related to lifeguard staff. Effective customer service methods. Effective safety practices and precautions related to beach front activities. Skills / Abilities: Supervising daily beach front activities. Maintaining detailed records and reports. Using computers and related software including word processing applications. Communicating effectively both orally and in writing. Establishing effective working relationships with City employee and the general public. Conduct basic beach front maintenance and perform light custodial duties. Enforce beach front rules and regulations. Handle multiple requests for assistance in an organized manner. Write, speak and visually communicate with others, particularly under stressful emergency conditions. Work flexible hours including nights and weekends. Work the complete lifeguard season and attend all scheduled training sessions. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma or equivalent. Two (2) years/seasons of lifeguard experience of which at least one (1) year/season must be at a beach park. Supervisory experience in an open water aquatics program is desirable. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess valid and current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training/First Aid and American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Northwest Lifeguard Test certification. Lifeguard Instructor and Water Safety Instructor certification is desirable. Possession of a valid Washington State Driver’s license and a good driving record is required. Proper documentation to fulfill the requirements of the Immigration and Nationality Act within three (3) days of employment is a condition of employment with the City of Sammamish. WORKING CONDITIONS: Outdoor recreational environment subject to noise, seasonal heat, adverse weather conditions and dangers associated with an aquatics setting.
