Collection: Florence Nightingale fonds Names: Nightingale, Florence, 1820-1910 Description: The letters written by and to Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) owned by the Woodward Biomedical Library were mainly acquired from Boston dealer Goodspeed. The first were obtained in 1966 and are a memorial to Jean McCash Fleming Moore, R.N., whose parents donated money toward their purchase. Many of this group of letters were written by F.N. to Mme. Julius Mohl (née Mary Clarke) her long-time friend. The second part of the collection was purchased in 196? and comprised about 80 items (including the Sister Mary Gonzaga (Georgiana) Barrie collection). A few other items have been received as individual gifts and seven letters were acquired from Hugh M. Sinclair with the books and papers purchased from him. Since their acquisition these letters have been handled by (too) many people. It is no longer possible to ascertain the relationships which existed among various items in the collection. It is unfortunate that the necessary planning was not done and that the experience in handling this type of material was lacking. The result, by 1972, was a chaotic collection of photocopies piled in a large cardboard carton, and a somewhat muddled mass of original letters. It must be said, however, that a serious effort had been made to preserve the original letters from deterioration and to sort them into some kind of order. (It should be noted that for a period prior to 1972 an interested person was permitted free access to the photocopies and to some of the original letters. This served to increase existing problems). As of August 1977 all letters had been photocopied and the originals (insofar as was possible) assembled into coherent wholes. By 1979 descriptions of the letters had been completed (with help from students in the Archives and Manuscripts course in the School of Librarianship at this university). These have been typed. Not all of the descriptions have been checked against the originals so errors may exist. Photocopies are arranged, as are the letters, in three categories.
