GOALS
1. Demonstrate your understanding of the themes of the novel.
2. Demonstrate your ability to write an academic essay
following all of the appropriate conventions for this style of
writing.
ASSIGNMENT
STEP ONE
Choose one of the following themes on which to write your paragraph.
Choose the theme topic on which you think your novel had the most to
say:
1. Prejudice
7. Secrets
13. Courage
2. Love
8. Coming of Age
14. Trust
3. Appearance vs. Reality
9. Loyalty
15. Survival
4. Freedom
10. Compassion
5. Hope
11. Friendship
6. Fear
12. Justice
STEP TWO
Choose one of the following approaches and develop a clear 5paragraph essay that explores on your chosen theme. Each paragraph
should have at least 2 points.
1. Choose three symbols from your novel that represent the
key theme from the novel. What do each of them represent?
2. Using a main character from your novel, discuss how the
theme is explored through three important things the
character learns about him/herself.
STEP THREE
1. Begin by writing out your topic sentence. Remember it
needs to state exactly what you will be doing/arguing in
your paragraph, as well as reminding the reader of the name
of the author and the book’s title!
2. Write each of your key points in full sentences
3. Using the Essay organizer, fill in the required detail.
4. Write your rough draft
5. Complete a thorough peer and self-edit.
6. Complete a polished copy.
EVALUATION
Your essay will be evaluated based upon a rubric of the following
criteria:
1. Have you followed all of the conventions required by the
academic essay style? Specifically,

the demonstration of your knowledge of the novel through
specific references to the text you have read;

your demonstration of your analysis skills through your
explanation of the issues raised in the question you have
selected

the application of the point, proof, comment method of
organizing your information;

and the lack of mechanical errors in your polished copy.
