Introduction to the Fourth R
Computers have changed virtually all aspects of our lives. As we move forward into the
Information Age, many experts agree that computer literacy has become the
‘FOURTH R’ in education today.
With over 200 franchise and license partners in 34 countries, the Fourth R is one of the
fastest growing companies in the computer training sector and has been highlighted in
prominent publications as one of the top franchises both in the United States and abroad.

The Fourth R offers 3 distinct partnership
programs:
1. Authorized
License.
Education
Center
(AEC)
An AEC license provides the best partnership option
for
an
existing
school
or
business
(e.g. training center, computer hardware store,
employment agencies, etc.). The AEC license is a
non-exclusive, renewable annual license to use
various Fourth R resources and related support at a
specific site(s). The AEC license includes courseware,
manual, various advertising and promotional
materials, and related support. An AEC licensee is not
required to pay royalties or provide monthly
operational reports to the Fourth R. In fact, an AEC
licensee has complete autonomy to run their computer
training and testing activities with only a few
operational constraints.
2. Franchise License.
A Franchise license provides the best partnership
option for a start-up computer training business. The
Franchise license is an exclusive ___year agreement
for a territory of up to _________ people. Franchise
partners participate in a week of training at corporate
headquarters and are required to follow a number of
operational procedures defined by the Fourth R Inc.
Two franchise business models are available–learning
center or home-based.
Computer know-how transforms all
this metal, glass and plastic into the
most powerful tool there is for
business, professional and personal
growth.
Robert McCauley
CEO, The Fourth R Inc.
The learning center franchise partner opens a facility of 800-2200 square feet (80-220 square meters)
in a commercial location and offers computer training and testing services to organizations and
individual adults. A significant amount of capital is required to open and operate a learning center in
the first few years of operation.
The home-based franchise partner offers on-location computer training for adults (e.g. businesses,
individuals, government organizations) and/or children (e.g. preschools, private schools, public
schools). The home-based business model requires less capital for a franchise partner to get started.
3. Master License.
This program is usually selected by an entrepreneur in a foreign country that has the expertise and
financial resources to promote and support the development of a national licensing network. In the
Master License format, the Master License partner receives a ___year renewable, exclusive agreement.
The agreement grants the Master License partner the right and responsibility for the development and
maintenance of the Fourth R network in a given country or "Region". This includes the sale and
support of Franchise and AEC partners throughout the Region.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This document provides information specifically related to
the ‘Franchise’ partnership program available in North America.

Results
It doesn't matter how well a student imitates keystrokes of
the teacher in class. What matters is the ability of our
students to apply the concepts and skills learned in a
course weeks or months later. This is what our customers
really want – results.
Proven Methods
Students learn how to use business-related software
through hands-on instructor-led training complemented
by proven multimedia learning tools. Training is available
at Fourth R computer training centers or at our clients’
location, using our equipment or theirs.
You Get What You Pay For
The popular all day cramming sessions and large,
impersonal class sizes offered by most training
organizations are poor learning models for computer
training. The Fourth R schedules a course in time blocks
to maximize student retention levels. Our task-oriented
courseware and small, personalized classes offer the best
value in computer training today.
Studies have shown an untrained user
can take up to six times as long to
accomplish the same amount of work
as a trained user.
Quality Courseware
Teams of professional educators work closely with
leading publishers such as Microsoft to match curriculum
objectives and instructional methodology with
certification requirements. Ask to preview our

Experienced Instructors

most cost-effective method for end-user training for

Microsoft Training and Certification
What's It All About, Anyway?
The Microsoft Office User Specialist Program gives a person the credentials they need to prove that they know how
to use Microsoft Office applications efficiently and productively. It never hurts to remind an employer – or potential
employer – that you've got the technical skills and software know-how that make you a more valuable, efficient, and
productive employee.
OK, So How Does Someone Become a Specialist?
The process couldn't be easier. In fact, we've boiled it down to five simple steps for a candidate to follow.
Step 1: Choose Your Level of Specialization
About Those Levels..
The Microsoft Office User Specialist Program offers three levels of
expertise. Start at any level, depending on your experience.
Microsoft Office Proficient Specialist
Proficient level exams are available for Microsoft Word and Excel
only. As a general rule of thumb, Proficient Specialists can handle a
wide range of everyday tasks with ease. Exam duration: 45-60
minutes. Passing score: 75-80%*.
Microsoft Office Expert Specialist
Expert level exams are available for Microsoft Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Access, FrontPage, Outlook and Office Integration.
Expert Specialists can handle a wide range of everyday tasks with
ease, plus handle more complex assignments that require advanced
formatting and functionality. Exam duration: 60-75 minutes.
Passing score: 75-80%*.
Microsoft Office Expert
Prove you have achieved Expert status in each of the Microsoft
Office applications and have demonstrated -- through the Office
Integration exam -- your ability to integrate these applications. This
is the highest level you can reach. Exam duration: 60-70 minutes.
Passing score: 75-80%.
Step 2: Assess Your Experience
How Do I Assess My Experience?
You can start by taking a look at the exam preparation guide that describes a list of skills you'll need to demonstrate
in order to become a Specialist at the level you choose. Visit a local Fourth R and request to take a performancebased assessment exam. Skill assessment ensures that each training dollar is spent cost-effectively on the proper
course.

CONFIDENCIAL
Step 3: Get Personalized Training
Get Training That Works.
The Fourth R learning model has consistently
proven to be the most cost-effective method for
Microsoft end-user training.
Step 4: Take a Simulation Test
What's a Simulation Test?
Microsoft certification doesn't come cheap. In
fact, it requires a significant amount of time and
money even for a proficient user to pass an
exam. The Fourth R simulation exams for the
Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS)
program ensure you're ready for test day. Our
simulation exams are designed to save time,
money and, best of all, worry.
Simulation exams provide timed, predictive simulations of the various MOUS certification exams. Our simulation
exams use the live application just like the "real" MOUS exams. This allows the user to access all the functions in a
Microsoft Office application while they perform exam tasks. Exam results are automatically analyzed for user
strengths and weaknesses. Follow-up training with the Fourth R can be scheduled for areas that require improvement
in order to pass a specific exam.
Step 5: Take the Test
Tell Me More About This Test.
The Specialist exam is not a written test. Instead, it features real-world assignments that are based on the way you
actually use your computer. Using an actual document, for example, you'll be asked to perform a series of tasks that
clearly demonstrate your desktop computing skills.
The typical exam takes less than an hour -- and in some cases as little as 30 minutes. It all depends on how
efficiently you work. You see, in addition to measuring your skills, each exam also gauges your productivity. And
the reward for passing? A Microsoft Office User Specialist certificate -- proof that you've got the desktop-computing
skills you need to work more productively and more efficiently than many of your co-workers.
That's good news to anyone in charge of hiring -- and promoting!

Learning Model
The learning process cycles through assessment,
presentation, practice, application and assessment once
again. An initial assessment reveals what a student knows
and what a student wants to learn. Then, new concepts are
presented, practiced with instructor guidance and
independently applied to relevant real-world situations.
At each stage, the instructor reviews concepts presented
and provides clarification. Lastly, a final assessment
ensures that students have mastered learning objectives.
Assessment Phase
In the initial Assessment Phase, interviews, survey
questionnaires and "live" projects, measure existing
skills. Pre-assessment results and student desired
outcomes contribute to a customized training plan.
Presentation Phase
The Presentation Phase covers lesson objectives,
introduces concepts, previews software features or
demonstrates a skill. Students learn why they would want
to learn a feature or gain a skill. A quick reference guide
acquaints students with the steps needed to perform a
task. At the end of the Presentation Phase, instructors
review the information covered and check for
understanding using courseware tools.
Practice Phase
In the Practice Phase, students, using hands-on guided exercises, begin to master skills previously introduced. Stepby-step examples show how to utilize software features and how to perform a task. Small steps make the exercises
easy to follow. Illustrations of outcomes and screen shots of the expected computer response give students
confidence as they progress through a lesson. An instructor guides students, supplying shortcuts, tips, and tricks to
performing an operation. The Practice Phase reinforces concepts as students practice skills in a relevant, realistic
application. At the end of the Practice Phase, a check for understanding and a quick review occur. At this point,
students should be able to answer questions about how a feature works and be ready to use the skill with little
assistance.
Application Phase
In the Application Phase, students gradually become more independent. Further Practice exercises in which students
answer short questions or perform a simple task require students to apply newly acquired skills. Challenges covering
lesson objectives reinforce knowledge. Relevant examples provide insight into how to use skills in other contexts.
The ability to customize exercises helps students meet personal objectives. Students learn how to use a feature in a
way much like they will outside the classroom.
Watching students work on a task allows the instructor to check for understanding, add helpful hints and reinforce
lesson concepts. Comprehensive exercises in the Application Phase ensure that new skills have been mastered. At
the end of this stage, students feel confident of their mastery and can readily demonstrate that proficiency.

Assessment Phase
Assessments that evaluate the skill, knowledge and understanding of a student, complete the Fourth R Learning
Model. Thus, students receive assurance that they have gained skills necessary to compete in the technology
marketplace and have received the certification authenticating their accomplishment.
The purpose of certification, a specialized type of post assessment, and the certifying institution varies by credential.
The Microsoft Office User Specialist certification indicates that a user has achieved a level of skill on the Microsoft
Office products - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access or Outlook.
Review Phase
The Review Phase follows each of the four stages. Instructors check for student understanding and reiterate key
points. Students demonstrate skills and knowledge. This phase is key to learning and guarantees that students master
the concepts and skills presented in the courses.
