INTERACTIVE MEDIA II Master of Fine Arts in Creative Media (MFA) School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong WEEK 2 Movie Soundtrack Critique Working in pairs select excerpts from two different movies that in your opinions represent an example of an outstanding sound track and another which represents a poor quality soundtrack. Some Ideas: - You might like to focus on the effective use of sound design or music as a tool to enhance the emotion, drama of a particular scene. - You could also look at how effective sound effects are in relation to supporting the action of a scene. - Maybe there are examples where some movies loose a sense of direction in the narrative due to the over use of music - How effective does music and sound design work within a given movie - How important is silence in creating suspense? - Compare how music and sound effects work when juxtaposed within a given scene - Within current Hollywood movies, is there any overlay between the role and function of sound effects, sound designs and music in supporting a film scene? - Within contemporary Hollywood film scoring, how does the role of music specific to action moves compare to the Hollywood approach in the 1950s and 1960s. Compare the James Bond and Mission Impossible movies as an example and the styles of the various composers. Notes: In 2003 "Black Hawk Down" won an Academy Award for best sound. For those that are interested in this movie, you might like to consider why it was given this award. Details: Each pair should plan a presentation of around 15mins. I suggest you limit your movie excerpts to around 2 minutes each. Presentation Date: During the lecture within Week-4 and Week-5 Master of Fine Arts in Creative Media (MFA) / Interactive Media II 2004/2005 Week 2 Master of Fine Arts in Creative Media (MFA) / Interactive Media II 2004/2005
