SCHOLORSHIP OPPORTUNITY Sigma Tau Sigma The Department of Social Sciences Scholastic Honor Society Los Angeles City College The scholarship contest provides the opportunity for students to demonstrate their abilities to articulate ideas from the Social Sciences point of view in the form of an essay. Sigma Tau Sigma will award three monetary scholarships. The recipient with the winning essay will receive $250.00. The second place recipient will receive $200.00 and the third place recipient will receive $100.00. Everyone that enters and meets the qualifications of Sigma Tau Sigma will receive membership and certificate into the scholastic society. Membership will be an advantage in applications to transfer colleges and universities. ESSAY QUESTION: What does it mean to obtain college education? Requirements for entry: (READ CAREFULLY) The essay will be evaluated on the following criteria: articulate writing, thoughtful insight, clarity, and relevance to the Social Sciences. Essays must be a minimum of 500 words. The essay must be type written, double-spaced, page numbered and submitted with a cover sheet that includes the title of your essay, your name and working and legible address. A complete Sigma Tau Sigma application must accompany the essay. Every student that meets the requirements for the scholarship will automatically receive membership in Sigma Tau Sigma Scholastic Honors Society. All students must have completed two courses in the Social Science Department at Los Angeles City College. These include African American Studies, Chicano Studies, Anthropology, Asian American Studies, Economics, Political Science, and Sociology. The minimum grade point average to qualify is a “B” (3.0) average in Social Sciences courses only. You must submit a transcript along with your application. The transcript can be “unofficial”. Entries that do not conform to rules and guidelines will not be reviewed. All entries become property of Sigma Tau Sigma. Sigma Tau Sigma reserves the right to not award the scholarship. DEADLINE: Essays will be accepted beginning May 1, 2009 and ending May 19, 2009 at 5:00 pm. No electronic entries will be accepted.
