Course Description: This introductory course examines the areas of human and
personality development, family systems, childhood, adolescence, young adulthood,
marriage, parenthood and transitions in family life (divorce, counseling, death, child
abuse and aging). The second half of the year will involve learning about physical,
intellectual, social and emotional development of children from infancy to the schoolaged child.
Meetings Per Week: 5

work on a group reading strategy activity. Students will complete chapter
review questions. Students will work in pairs on an “Interpersonal Cartoons”
project. Students will complete Ch 1.1 and 1.2 worksheets. Students will take
the Chapter 1exam.
Families Make a Difference
Students will read Chapter 2 aloud, pausing for notes and discussion. Students
will create a chart of “where they learned their values.” Students will complete a
“values in the media” activity. Students will complete Ch. 2.1 and 2.2
worksheets. Students will complete a crosstich using their names and associated
values. Students will take the Chapter 2 exam

will complete a “family atmosphere” writing activity. Students will work in
pairs to complete an illustrated & descriptive “Family Structures” chart.
Students will answer questions from video “Being Active as a Family.” Students
will conduct an experiment on decision-making in groups. Students will write a
“Dear Abby” letter on family structure issues. Students will create a “Surviving
the Empty Nest Syndrome” pamphlet. Students will work on a poster/essay
project in pairs on Family Life Cycle stages. Students will take an exam on
Chapter 3.
