Topic 4 In issue 4 you will be asked to discuss the success of Britain’s foreign policy when faced with the aggressive policies of both Italy and Germany. To successfully answer a question on this topic you will need to construct your argument around the following points: The attack on Abyssinia by Italy (What action did Britain take?) Hitler openly declaring German rearmament (Again, what did Britain do?) Hitler’s remilitarisation of the Rhineland (Did Britain object, take action?) The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (Did Britain help? What action did they adopt?) The creation of the Anschluss (Again what did Britain do and why?) A typical essay question for this topic would be:How successful was Britain’s Foreign policy in containing the aggressive nature of both Hitler and Mussolini between 1935 and March 1938? Remember - ALWAYS answer the question and relate back to it at the beginning or end of each point. Ie – The Italian attack on Abyssinia can in many ways been seen as a major success for Britain’s foreign policy.... Or Hitler’s remilitarisation of the Rhineland and his willingness to co-operate can in many ways fully justify Britain’s success in adopting a policy of appeasement in order to contain Hitler’s aggressive nature.
