School Captain Speech
Good Afternoon, teachers and year 8 students of Marymount College. My
name is Sara Petruzzella, I’m a student of 8 Amber and I would love to be
your school captain for 2011. Through-out this speech you will learn a little
bit more about my personality, my goals and aspirations, my leadership
qualities and what would make me a good candidate for this position.
Firstly, I would like to start by explaining to you what this position means to
me. The School Captain needs to be a respectful but also fun loving person,
someone who can represent the school and its core values; Hospitality,
Compassion, Stewardship and Reconciliation in a positive manner. To me the
role of school captain is more than a badge or a fancy title but a chance to
make a positive influence on the students even teachers and their time at
Marymount College. I will be the first person to say that I’m not perfect but
I do believe that this position is perfect for me.
Secondly, I would like to introduce you to my personality types. My 2
strongest personality types are Type 1; The Reformer and Type 2; the
Helper. As these personality types I offer many great qualities to this
position,
As a Type One I,
 Have a strong sense of what’s right, which leads me to make good
decisions.
 Always work towards an ideal, I always have a goal and believe that I
can achieve it.
 Am truthful and trustworthy, I can be trusted with great
responsibility.
 Have strong values and morals, I stand for what I believe in and I
don’t let others influence me in a wrong way.
 Always try to be the best person I can possibly be.
As a Type Two I,
 Put others before myself, I think about others and how my actions
may influence them.
 Am very friendly, I am a very happy and bubbly person who gets
along well with others.
 Am dedicated, in total this year I was involved in around 10 groups
including, T.O.M, Enviro group council, Peer mentor and Vocal
Ensemble, I’ve been a class captain and a house captain also.
Am very charitable, I do a lot of charity work and work for the
environment. The less fortunate are very close to my heart and I
really admire how people with so little can be so happy. I spend a
lot of time and effort getting involved with charities and
fundraisers to help them. When I am older I would love to be a
teacher and teach in 3rd World Countries.
Other qualities I display include,
 I can laugh at myself but also know when it’s time to be serious.
 I’m a good listener and take note of everyone’s option and point of
view.
 I take criticism well and use it to help me grow and become my best.
 I am not afraid to speak out and be myself.
 I will be a mentor and a role model for students but also be their
friend.
And most importantly be a Good Samaritan, show love, respect and
kindness to all. Accept everyone as they are and don’t worry about
prejudice.

Thirdly, a leader that inspires me, Joan of Arc. Some of you may or may not
be familiar with Joan of Arc but she is one of my biggest inspirations. Saint
Joan of Arc was a peasant girl from France, whom after seeing visions of
Saints lead France to many wins in the Hundred Years War and saved them
from being taken over by England, all before the age of 19. Joan of Arc is
known as an inspiration to all, especially woman as she lead 5000 men to
victory back in the 1400’s. As I am she is a Type 1, The Reformer and we
share many qualities and aspire to be more. I hope through my life and even
through this position I will achieve something half as great as Joan of Arc
did.
As a school leader and part of the MLG all my actions are to work towards
one ideal; to improve our already beloved school, Marymount College. As I
previously mentioned charity is a big part of me, so as school captain I would
love to focus a little more on charity. I’d love to have as many enjoyable
fundraising events as possible and help a wider range of people. I would also
love to work closely with the Enviro Group to improve our school
environment. Being on the Enviro Council this year was a great leadership
experience and through it I learnt of many, many more ways we could
improve our school environment and I’d really like to put those plans into
action in the near future. And most importantly I would like to be a positive
representative for our school through showing, Hospitality; welcoming others
and making everyone feel that they ‘have a place’, Compassion; being
considerate of others and showing sympathy when necessary, Stewardship;
to be aware of everything around me and act as stewards in all possible
matters and lastly, Reconciliation; forgiving others and accepting that no-one
is perfect.
I’d like to finish by saying, that I really hope I can bring something unique
and special to Marymount College in 2011 as your school captain. Helping
others is a passion of mine and I would love the chance to show you what I
can do and how this position will help me grow.
And finally I would like to leave you with a quote that I intend to lead by,
“The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not
weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not
timid; be proud, but not arrogant; and to have humour, but without folly.” Jim Rohn. Thank you.
