Book Report Options DO NOT LOSE THIS PAPER – You will need this for the entire school year. Students will be graded on the written portion of the option for a writing grade. The presentation and conversation will be graded on comprehension of the story and receive a grade for Reading. It is important that you include literary elements. In addition, you must always include the title, author, genre (see list following this) setting, plot with story line and important events, characters, & theme. If you can remember the page # when the book started getting hard to put down, please let others know in your presentation. Some Genres Action/Adventure Autobiography/Biography Comedy Court Room Drama/Lawyers Detective/Spy Family Drama Fantasy Graphic Novels Historical Horror Medical/Forensic Mystery Poetry Romance Romantic Comedy Science Science Fiction Sports Suspense Thriller War Western The expectations for the oral presentations is that you stand in the front of the classroom and share with the class the plot of your book, some interesting points (about the story or your project) explain the elements of your project, any opinions, and any recommendations. It is really important that you look at the class, speak clearly, and speak loudly. The objective of a presentation is your ability to talk about something to the class, not to read things to us dispassionately. – PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS FOR CLARIFICATION Due Dates: AR = 10/9 Project using this sheet = 10/13 AR = 11/20 AR Test and In class project with computers = 1/8 AR = 2/15 AR Test and Project using this sheet = 3/14 AR = 4/18 AR Test and Project using this sheet = 5/13 Literary elements to include as appropriate in your reports and projects: See the back glossary of the literature book for some brief explanations: Setting Characters Protagonist (Main “good guy”) Antagonist (Main “bad guy”) Conflict Climax- Turning point Conclusion Theme (main lesson/universal) All projects have an element of creativity, mastery of skills, and show strengths of various learning styles. They will take time to complete WELL and will require planning. If you have ANY problems with an assignment, please come to me at most a week before due. This way we will have plenty of time to work on any challenges. You may pair up with another person who has read the same book – but 2x the pages are required Newspaper – Look at the format of a newspaper. You are to “write” mini-articles and place them in your newspaper. At least one article is to follow the elements of a story map (characters, setting, protagonist, antagonist, theme, and the full plot); at least one should have your opinion and recommendations. Include in your newspaper these things: headings, bi-lines (who the author of the article is), an advertisement, and three or four small pictures placed into rows and columns. Try to make this look as real as possible. This should be done on the computer. I can help you to understand how to work with the layout and design on the computer, please ask-- 2 sides, 11-12 pt. font Calibri or similar for each person- small margins. Make a movie or Talk Show – Here is an opportunity for the director and actor in all of us. You will have to cast, direct, act (optional) and produce a segment of the story. The objective is for us, the viewer to gain a good idea of what the story is about and become interested in wanting to read the story. You do not have to act in this production but you are responsible of all of the other elements of this project. You will be describing the plot, characters, and setting of the story to the viewers. This will be shown in class so it must be on a DVD/flash drive. (You will need to write/ turn in a script) – 2 pages, 11-12 pt. font Calibri or similar for each person – If the movie does not include the full plot, write a full one page summary adding in protagonist, antagonist, and theme. Children’s book, a children’s version of the book you read. Create this book with summaries as the captions on each page (this will be the written element). Pictures must be original. You may print out pictures to use, but they must be creatively chosen. No pictures of a movie version of the book. 12 pages. Don’t forget to include a cover which does not count as part of the 12 pages. Include all important parts of the plot adding in protagonist, antagonist, and theme. Photo Album/Scrap Book– Create a photo album that demonstrates the plot line of the story. Each picture MUST have a caption. You may use a digital camera and stage pictures for the album, or you may create a collage type picture by cutting out people, places, and things that demonstrate the plot and main ideas in the story. This is a CREATIVE activity. More than one picture should be on the page and mementos should be added. Think about a scrap book that someone would make for important events in their life. This should be at least 12 pages long. Don’t forget to include a cover which does not count as part of the 12 pages. Include all important parts of the plot adding in protagonist, antagonist, and theme. Below is a copy of the rubric that will be used to grade your report.
