Selection and Appointment of
1. Prefects,
2. House Captains/Head Boy/Head Girl.
1. Prefects (S5 – S6).
1.1 The contribution of prefects to the positive ethos of the school cannot be
underestimated.
Prefects are appointed by their peers and staff.
It is both an honour and a responsibility to be selected.
1.2 Prefects therefore are expected to set the highest possible standards of pride
respect and ambition and demonstrate this in their
 Uniform (prefects will wear blazers with one stripe on the cuff);
 Conduct;
 Attendance;
 time keeping;
 commitment to academic attainment, both their own and that of their peers;
 commitment to wider achievement both their own and that of their peers;
 promotion of the good name of Perth Grammar School;
 Ability to set the highest example for junior pupils in all of the above.
1.3 The role of Prefect includes:
 setting a standard of pride, respect and ambition for all pupils to aspire to;
 working as a member of the prefect team;
 assisting staff in managing the good order of the school;
 providing leadership for and taking part in extra –curricular activities;
 Undertaking a variety of day to day and occasional duties around the school e.g.
representing the school as required at parent’s evenings, hospitality for visitors,
organising classes for photos, vaccinations etc. lunch duty, and detention duty.
1.4 Appointment process. .
 Nominations for Prefects S5/6 can self-nominate or be nominated by peers and
by school staff;
 Head of House and guidance staff will leet nominations for each House using
the criteria at 1.2,1.2,1.3 and final decisions on appointments will be made by
them.
2. Senior Prefects (S6 only): Senior Prefects will be selected and appointed by a
process involving both staff and their peers.
2.1 The role of House Captain
House Captains will have already been appointed as prefects and will therefore meet
the criteria as outlined at 1.1 - 1.3 above
The purpose of this role will be to develop a strong house identity and manage the
prefect team within that house by carrying out the following duties:
 Upholding the school aims of Pride Respect and Ambition;
 Develop a positive school ethos by personal example and by encouraging and
supporting others;
 Promoting and supporting initiatives to enhance pupil morale;
 Representing the interests of pupils to staff;
 Initiating and organising senior school committees;
 Organise inter-house activities/competitions;
 Recruit others from the house to participate in events;
 Raise the profile of House Points;
 Represent prefects at house meeting with house team;
 Ensure rotas are maintained and that prefects are carrying out assigned duties;
 Assist teachers in supervising corridors, stairs, social areas and dining hall;
 Assist with parents evenings and other school events;
 Organise meeting with their house team of prefects (at least termly, but more
regularly if required);
 Lead House Assemblies.
2.1a Appointment process for House Captain
Candidates will:
 write a personal statement which demonstrates their ability to meet the criteria
outlined at 1.1-1.3 and in 2.1;
 Be leeted and interviewed by House staff.
2.2 The role of Head Boy /Head Girl
Head Boy and Head girl will be expected to meet the criteria for Prefect and House
captain but will, from their experience either in school or in other areas of life (e.g.
sport, cadets, church, and community) be able to cite examples which demonstrate an
ability to:















Promote the good name of Perth Grammar School;
Motivate and enthuse others;
Achieve a planned outcome by leading and/or working as part of a team;
Meet an agreed deadline, even under pressure;
Gain the respect of their peers;
Speak to a large audience;
Implementing and maintaining the Pupil Council;
Representing the school at Parent Council meetings;
Have regular meetings with the Senior Leadership Team;
Liaise with the Business Manager;
Manage the Buddy System (S1);
Assist in Primary Transition with Depute Support;
Be involved in Feeder Primary links;
Represent the school at all formal occasions (Parents Evening, Prize giving etc.);
Participate in House Assemblies.
2.2a Appointment Process for Head Boy/ Head Girl
Each candidate will:
 write a personal statement which demonstrates their ability to meet the criteria
outlined in 2.2 as well as 1.1-1.3;
 applications will be leeted by SMT;
 those leeted will give a nomination speech summarising this personal statement
and outlining their vision for the school and for their role as Head Boy/Girl to a
meeting of pupil representatives and staff;
 Be ‘interviewed’ by a panel chaired by the Head Teacher which will make the
appointments.
